A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government.

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

So with Starmer recognising the Palestinian state, does that mean that Hamas get an embassy and diplomatic immunity in the UK?

Plantatreetoday · 21/09/2025 21:16

strawberrybubblegum · 21/09/2025 20:13

Bloody hell.

Can we make a petition for the government to tell everyone asking us for reparations to just fuck right off.

I'd join a demonstration for that - no matter who else marched alongside me.

I’ll come.

This might get us noticed

And how can a state be recognised when it does not have a functioning government nor defined borders?

TBF, Belgium had no government for almost 2 years. But I think no government is better than a government who are a proscribed terrorist organisation.

To be even fairer, we haven’t had a government to speak of for 14 months.

I suppose Starmer’s just exporting his vision of a state operating without sentient leadership.

Oooh is it Monday? Let’s hope it’s a quiet week with no more leaking of new taxes.

Also waiting for the government to give me the £8k per year they spend on each UK child's education. Happy for it to be in the form of a voucher I can give to her school towards her fees.

Since we're being 'fair'.

My understanding (I could be wrong) is that this is what they do in Australia. The school fees are subsidised by roughly the amount it costs the government to educate each child. Because the state recognises that it is of huge overall fiscal benefit to them to have a portion of children in independent schools.

You're correct. Other countries do the same.

Why have they decided to recognise a Palestinian state now?

We may or may not be of much importance in the ME situation, but the concept of recognising a Palestinian state could have been a useful lever to encourage one or both sides toward, or away from, certain behaviours. But now that's just gone. With no apparent benefit to the situation at the moment.

I have a feeling it may be linked to the concessions the government made to the rebels over the changes to the benefit rules. They couldn't be seen to row back completely completely, so I'm guessing this was a sweetener for the rebels to agree to the watered down version.

Well quite. I suppose ‘functioning’ by definition would mean ‘not a terrorist organisation who will then theoretically be entitled to ‘recognised state’ benefits in other countries’

Yes, it probably does double duty, pacifying Labour rebels and letting him play man of the international stage card again without actually having to do anything at all.

O.M.G I really hope that's not the case. To give a win to murderous terrorists - in a situation as serious as the ME - for mere party political gain would be beyond contemptible.

I thought I was past any kind of expectations of Labour, but that suggestion has actually taken my breathe away. I think for my own peace of mind, I'm going to assume it's just ill-judged good intent, incompetence and overall lack of good judgement.

I'd really like to agree with your assumption, but so far this government has demonstrated nothing but poor judgement and certainly no good intent. At best, they're malicious imbeciles.

And so it begins.

Keir Starmer’s top aide faces calls for police probe over hidden £740k in donations linked to PM's rise | The Sun

SIR Keir Starmer’s top aide is facing calls for a police probe over claims he hid almost £740,000 in Labour donations.
Leaked emails suggest Morgan McSweeney, now the PM’s chief of staff, sought to brush off the breaches as an “admin error” and to keep his name out of the spotlight.
The Tories have now written to the Electoral Commission demanding a full investigation, and for the case to be passed to police to consider possible criminal offences.

Morgan McSweeney, Downing Street Chief of Staff, walking with his hands in his pockets.

😅 by benefits I don’t mean job seekers allowances

amicisimma · 22/09/2025 10:16

It seems that today is the start of Rosh Hashansh, the Jewish New Year. Not the most tactful timing to announce recognition of a state whose leaders' official position is to bring about the end of Israel.

What a pity Starmer has no one near him who is Jewish and could tell him. Oh, hold on ...

(Before anyone asks, I would also prefer avoidance of some beneficial-to-Israel announcement being made around a Muslim festival.)

JustStopItNorasaurus · 22/09/2025 10:20

As you say @amicisimma .

It also angers me when the government witters about 'a two state solution'. Hamas rejects that idea completely because they want Israel to be wiped off the map entirely and the death to all Jewish people all around the world. You can't deal in good faith with people who are acting in bad faith.

With all my heart I wish and hope for peace. That goes without saying I am sure.

Upstartled · 22/09/2025 10:22

Apparently we are going to give poor countries advice rather than aid because of budget cuts 😂😂

First lesson: tell them you are going to grow the economy while ushering in a slew of anti-business policies. You're welcome.

JustStopItNorasaurus · 22/09/2025 11:09

Well- a not-unexpected e-mail. The tenant in my flat has given notice. She's in finance and has decided to jump ship before the budget. Returning to her home country. She said 'You will understand my reasoning..... '.

Yep.
