Labour isn't working - Thread 9

A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government.

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

I think Reeves will raise stamp for properties at Maybe £500k plus
I think that’s why the budget is being announced in November and not October
ie to wait for Raynors flat purchase disaster to due down.

Then I think capital gains tax rates will be brought inline with income tax

Landlords will be required to pay council tax with no exemption for students or reductions for single occupation. A disaster for students

Id like to see a super road tax on big gas guzzling cars
Id like to see an increase in the hours required to work before UC eligibility

Id like to see a super road tax on big gas guzzling cars

Noooooo! I love my car 😭😭 Take a limb instead 😂

Sorry @TheNuthatch i agree with @Plantatreetoday about the gas guzzlers / huge SUVs. They should be liable to paying more tax (I think they do in other countries??). And so fed up of them filling up parking spaces they’re too big for. Careering around little streets and roads as if they’re in the middle of the countryside! This country is made for small cars.. get yourself a Ford Fiesta 😂😂 (do they still exist?)

upseedaisee · 16/09/2025 20:13

It's a worrying time. On top of what has already been mentioned I also think the pension relief at source could be reduced, except the public sector of course, can't upset the unions and the triple lock may well be a victim too. It's just a mess isn't it?

They already do if the list price was more than £40k at first registration. And for those of us that live rurally, SUVs are essential at times. The lane that I live on doesn’t get gritted and it’s subject to flooding. We also have a smaller electric car which we use as much as possible but it’s not always practical. And many large SUVs are electric now anyway so they don’t gas guzzle.

I swapped my SUV for a 10 yr old Kia Venga. Live rurally with horses etc and got sick of spending ££ on new suspension etc for SUV.
My Venga is amazing. Costs £300 per year to insure, £40 road tax per year. Is a diesel and 1 tank lasts me 4 weeks.
My car is now 14 years old, going strong and gets up and down rutted roads no problem. I have winter tyres + chains on in snow and ice.

Only challenge is that it only fits 2 x bags of shavings in at a time

Nope, ain't gonna happen. He is staying and that's that (yes my car is a he, and he has a name). He is my one true love. I'd give up my husband before I got rid of my car 😂.

Oh wow 🤯
Does anyone familiar with the new voting system understand how that would translate in the senedd??

True, a lot are electric now. It’s more the sheer size of them that bothers me. Last week I was in a hospital car park, driving round to find a rare free space. Finally one appeared - a huge suv on both sides. Plus a column. I could only park by folding in the wing mirrors. Barely able to get out of the car.

Anyway we digress! Sir Keir oh dear etc..

It's something I knew nothing about so a quick google shows 16 constituencies for the senedd and 6 members are elected from each constituency making a total of 96.
From the link below.
How will Members be elected?
The 2026 election will use a new voting system called a ‘closed proportional list system’. This means the number of seats a party or independent candidate wins will more closely reflect the percentage of votes they get.

  • Political parties will prepare a list of up to eight candidates for each constituency. Independent candidates can also stand for election.
  • On election day you will be given a ballot paper and will vote for the party or independent candidate you want to represent you in the Senedd.
  • Your ballot paper will show the full list of candidates in your constituency, so you can still see who is standing for each party.
  • If a party wins enough votes, they will win one or more seats in the Senedd. So if a party wins three seats in a constituency, the top three people on their list will be elected to those seats.
  • If an independent candidate wins enough votes, they will also win a seat in the Senedd.
  • Seats are allocated based on the share of votes each party or independent candidate gets.

I can't do it twisty 😂.
They are expensive to run, you're right there. Mine is 10 years old now.
My car isn't that big anyway, certainly fits into a normal parking space without annoying anyone. I need to tow regularly so a small car doesn't work. I also need to access building sites that require 4x4 just to get onto the site. One of our cars has to be able to do some off roading. DH's car isn't an SUV, he has an estate 😇.

Thank you. I'm just wondering whether a coalition of the left would be able to stop Reform.

Those stats will do Starmer no favours.

I must admit I do sometimes have pangs of remembering being able to drive over fields in snow. That shit was fun 😆
