I want rich dark chocolate sponge. I want cherries soaked in kirsch. I want proper whipped cream.

Where can I buy such a dream concoction? Supermarket versions are lightweight.

Nigella has a Yule Log recipe which does not involve flour. It is nice and chocolatey and I just bake it in round cake tins not as a Swiss roll.

I’ve just made one to kick off my birthday week 😬 bought the cherries in kirsch from wooden spoon recommended on here and they are lovely!

Many years ago, I had a Schwabian girlfriend who made me what she called a local cake, rich chocolate with cherry filling but without whipped cream. It had shaved chocolate garnish. She considered SWKT to be a fancy thing to have in a posh cafe.

Aldi Black forest roulade is not nice. Too full of glucose. I won’t buy again. 3/10

Here is my Black Forest gateau trifle I made today to take to my WI group. It’s very like a cake, just squashed into a bowl really!

I made the chocolate cake, a chocolate custard and the cherry pie filling using fresh cherries which took aes to de-stone. There is Cherry brandy liqueur in the cherry sauce and soaking in the cake, also Baileys in the chocolate sauce! The layers are cake, chocolate custard, cherries, whipped cream then repeated, with grated chocolate on top! It’s hard to see the layers in the photo as the bowl is tinted glass.

There must be hundreds of calories in it, there is sour cream in the chocolate cake, double cream and 200g of chocolate in the custard then more cream on top - let alone all the alcohol!

I’ve not tasted it yet but I’m sure it will be delicious. I dread to think how much I spent!

I also made Black Forest trifle the weekend before last, inspired by this thread. Mine was homemade dark chocolate sponge liberally soused with Heering cherry liqueur, sour cherries in syrup from Lidl (definitely a bit mid), homemade chocolate mousse layer, whipped cream and then crushed amaretti biscuits on top. It had a million calories in it but it was worth it.
