I want rich dark chocolate sponge. I want cherries soaked in kirsch. I want proper whipped cream.

Where can I buy such a dream concoction? Supermarket versions are lightweight.

How close are you to Barnard Castle?

There is a bakery there that does a beautiful one.

I always think of Dominic Cummings driving to Barnard Castle to test his eyesight. Now I will have to drive to Barnard Castle to test the BFG!

I wonder why it went out of fashion ? just like prawn cocktail which is also lovely and we always have that as a starter when my family come round.

Same as shoulder pads, I suppose, but they’re making a comeback so you never know…

Places that supply bars and restaurants sell them. They are unsurprisingly expensive, and quite large. I used to be a trade member at Bookers but Costco encourage the public.

I imagine larger towns will have a trade supplier on an industrial estate somewhere.

Yayyyyyy @PigletJohn you’re still on MN. I was thinking about you the other day as the temperature thingy has gone kaput on my shower.

I’m just about to make a Black Forest Trifle for a WI meeting tomorrow. I made a rich chocolate cake yesterday and depitted a load of cherries to soak in cherry brandy overnight. So just need to use some of the cherries to make a compote and then make the chocolate custard enhanced with Baileys Irish cream before creating the trifle in my original 1970s glass bowl.

I will of course be liberally soaking the pieces of cake with Cherry brandy before adding the boozy cherry filling and then a layer of whipped cream. Repeat the layers then decorate the dish with whole cherries dipped in chocolate.

When finished, I can enjoy the rest of the Baileys over ice!

I'm not sure exactly where they're based and can't see from the website but they're at farmers' markets round and about and I've ordered direct from them and the deliver to the door. They're really nice people and respond to emails pretty quickly so maybe possible to work something out. Good luck!

Thank you - I might have to drive around as their website says they won’t deliver anything which contains alcohol. THIS is the cake that I want so I will make it my life’s mission to find it.

Photos. I need photos.

Cheery brandy is very strong, isn’t it?!

Hang on, what?? I’ve been pinning my hopes on that Cook one.

The Cook one looks to be seasonal, part of their Christmas range & available from 29 October. I will be checking it out. I may have to host a dinner party to justify the expense and help me get through it. 🤣

The BFG recipe in the Prawn Cocktail Years cookbook is simply epic. Quite a slog to make but three layers of boozy goodness.

I think you should get this book for your birthday. It’s a really really good cookbook and very fun to read.

ifIwerenotanandroid · 07/09/2025 11:58

The only time I've made one from scratch, it was because I was inspired by seeing the Hairy Bikers make one on TV (not something I usually watch). I found their recipe & it really worked. I even made one half lactose-free for a family member.

For a quick & easy BFG, we used to get the Tesco frozen one delivered & add extra grated dark chocolate.

Baked alaska - make sure icecream is as cold as can be. Arrange it on sponge and freeze overnight. Leave in freezer until meringue is made and ready to use. Have oven really hot and leave in only until browned. Make sure meringue COMPLTELY seals ice cream in

Thank you but i wnat to buy not make one (lazy)

Au contraire. My plumber has broken his shoulder and I managed to track down the thermostat cartridge and I was hoping PigletJohn would tell me how to replace it myself in a passive aggressive kind of way.

I will be spending a lot of money at Kipferl!

Reporting back from Waitrose: no BFG to be had but they do sell chocolate/cherry ice cream which is very nice.

Not to brag, but I make an amazing Black Forest Gateau I also do cupcake versions and a trifle one at Christmas. As a 70's child it's my favourite !

@magicstar1 you can’t tell us you make an amazing BFG without sharing the recipe! I would love to make the cupcake version because I’m the only one in the house that would eat them so I could freeze half to have later —two days later—

TBF I bet your Oma or anyone else’s didn’t made Black Forest trifle - so at this point the authenticity of Baileys in the custard or not is moot…….

cupfinalchaos · 08/09/2025 10:56

Schwartzvalde Kirsch Torte! My dad’s favourite but never seen it here.

Typicalwave · 08/09/2025 10:58

Ooh, you could add prawn cocktail and coc au van for full in 80’s mode

HarrietBond · 08/09/2025 10:58

The Prawn Cocktail Years recipe, which I looked up today, covers the cake with a dark chocolate ganache rather than cream.
