I want rich dark chocolate sponge. I want cherries soaked in kirsch. I want proper whipped cream.

Where can I buy such a dream concoction? Supermarket versions are lightweight.

Second of all... I always have a black forest gateaux for my birthday. Yum. I just buy frozen ones though as I like them. I've seen them on a few cake shops or little cake stall things that you see in shopping centers. Hopefully you find one and enjoy it :)

Years ago there was an amazing bakery in Moseley Birmingham, had an absolutely delicious black forest type gateau. I still think about it. Does anyone else remember it, I can't remember it's name sadly.

Sainsburys sell the PV one in slices. It is so-so. The sponge is all air and no substance. I think you’d feel cheated. Keep looking.

Anyone remember the Swiss Bakery in Derriford, Plymouth? Absolutely amazing BFG so as now reminded, I’d like a time machine for my next birthday so I can go back and buy one.

Happy birthday! It's my birthday today too, and I also adore BFG. Unfortunately, I've got a really upset tummy, so the thought of having one right now isn't appealing in the slightest.

Yeh the patisserie Valerie one is rubbish just a heavy chocolate sponge with a cherry on the top - was so disappointed. I also recommend that Sainsbury's recipe - nice and light but a nice kick with the Kirsch.

Black Forest is my most favourite thing of all. And Beefeater’s version is so good. Really, really good. PV was incredibly disappointing. It looks so promising but completely fails to deliver. M&S isn’t bad either. But Beefeater’s is the best.

There was an independent bakery near my school in the early 80s that made the most amazing BFG. It was the thing you ordered for a special birthday - I remember getting a huge one for my 18th! No longer there, sadly.

Baked alaska - make sure icecream is as cold as can be. Arrange it on sponge and freeze overnight. Leave in freezer until meringue is made and ready to use. Have oven really hot and leave in only until browned. Make sure meringue COMPLTELY seals ice cream in
