It’s my birthday. I want Black Forest Gateau.

I want rich dark chocolate sponge. I want cherries soaked in kirsch. I want proper whipped cream.

Where can I buy such a dream concoction? Supermarket versions are lightweight.

Anyone remember the Swiss Bakery in Derriford, Plymouth? Absolutely amazing BFG so as now reminded, I’d like a time machine for my next birthday so I can go back and buy one.

OMG - that's the very one I mentioned in my above post! (Probably outing, but who cares - that school had a lot of pupils over the years...) Sixth formers were allowed to visit it during breaktime and would return laden with boxes full of luscious eclairs and coffee rings. And, of course, it was everyone's go-to for a birthday cake!

Blimeyorange · 06/09/2025 23:37

Oh good lord- I nip off thread for a few hours and I come back to cakeland extraordinaire.

Will catch up on the posts as we have had friends round and they have only just gone.

For the record, they brought chocolate brownies and I topped them with whipped cream and cherry brandy (couldn’t find the kitsch in Waitrose) which was passable but not the real deal.

So random. But Iceland do one

BumbleBee120 · 07/09/2025 02:56

Morrisons usually do a freshly baked one in their bakery section! My favourite 🍰

treacledan71 · 07/09/2025 03:35

I am sure farmfoods do them.

whoboo · 07/09/2025 03:43

Fucks sake I also want this now and it's not even my birthday.

TroysMammy · 06/09/2025 15:12

Happy Birthday! I can't help with the gateau but will you be having a prawn cocktail to start and a t-bone steak with a garnish of grilled tomato for main?

I'd unironically love that.

PigletJohn · 07/09/2025 06:38

Places that supply bars and restaurants sell them. They are unsurprisingly expensive, and quite large. I used to be a trade member at Bookers but Costco encourage the public.

I imagine larger towns will have a trade supplier on an industrial estate somewhere.

Gemstonebeach · 07/09/2025 08:17

You need to buy kirsh and do the cherries yourself for a proper decadent one. Not helpful when you want one right now!

Animatic · 07/09/2025 08:32

Order on deliveroo from whichever restaurant makes it nearby

LinesAndLinesAndLinesAndLines · 07/09/2025 08:35

I love Black Forest gateaux! It is the most delicious thing ever. I used to love a Sara Lee one when I was kid. A restaurant near me used to do a gorgeous one years ago, really decadent. I was gutted when they changed menu.

I could right go a slice. Breakfast cake. 😂

Following for recommendations! 😍

Happy birthday for yesterday OP!

Sauvignonblanket · 06/09/2025 15:31

If you're in Herts, Zuckermaus bakery do them to order...

Thank you for your birthday messages. I will go through the thread.

@Sauvignonblanket this looks incredible. Is the bakery in St Albans? That’s a 2 hour drive away but it looks worth it. 😋

I had that last Saturday. The size is very big and it is delish. Can't stop thinking about it as it was on my cheat day.
Their cakes all look lovely.

Think this was the recipe I used. I bought the chocolate curls after trying to make my own, rather unsuccessfully

Thank you! Your cake is making me hungry, it looks so good. Was it easy to make?

I wonder why it went out of fashion ? just like prawn cocktail which is also lovely and we always have that as a starter when my family come round.

Blimeyorange · 07/09/2025 09:36

GladioliGreen · 06/09/2025 15:58

It's my favourite cake ever. I make my own. I've recently been diagnosed as celiac and the first thing I thought of was that for my next birthday I won't be able to have black forest 😭

Have you tried buckwheat flour, which is a seed? Or make the cake using almond flour to make a dense torte. You can and will eat the BFG!

I love Black Forest cake - Cafe Concerto/Patisserie Valerie is good but if you want the boozy version I highly recommend the Forêt Noire Cake at Paul - so so good. 😋

Now THIS is what I want!

I'm not sure exactly where they're based and can't see from the website but they're at farmers' markets round and about and I've ordered direct from them and the deliver to the door. They're really nice people and respond to emails pretty quickly so maybe possible to work something out. Good luck!

The PV one is not nice! Very artificial tasting. Like PP said Beefeater do a really good one! I was very surprised by how good it is! I enjoyed it so much that I had a slice after my breakfast when staying in an attached Premier Inn (the restaurant manager remembered I'd enjoyed it the night before and slipped me a slice with my coffee 😁)

Thanks for the heads up about PV. But I don’t think I have a Beefeater near me 😢

My mum made an amazing BFG, the trick is to soak the the sponge layers, not the cherries. She also used one shot glass of kirsch per slice, so for a twelve slice cake, twelve shot glasses.
Disclaimer: I grew up in Germany, bordering the Black Forest

Amazing pro tip - thank you!

I am overly invested in your pursuit of the perfect BFG.
Happy Birthday OP.

Next year, consider what cake you want before the big day so you can save yourself the wild goose chase!

😆

l will have to taste test everything and report back. DS is off to uni soon so I need a new hobby.

I make one for my birthday, or my yds birthday every year and it is dairy, cocoa and gluten free! It's a challenge but it is delicious. I use the recipe above and use replacements for the cream, butter etc and use carob instead of cocoa powder.
I really would love a slice of that Cooks ones though as it looks delicious, but sadly no longer available

Hang on, what?? I’ve been pinning my hopes on that Cook one.

Honestly the best I ever had was in Baden Baden. It was pure heaven. But I’m not sure that helps you.

That’s our next holiday planned. I have tried Sachertorte and thought it a bit dull TBH.

Watching to see if @Blimeyorange gets her gateau! And from where!!
Happy birthday Blimey, hope it’s been a lovely day.

Thank you 🤩 And DH was supposed to be going to London tomorrow for a meeting so I could have sent him to Lola’s (because it WAS my birthday!) but thanks to the tube strike he is staying home and Teamsing it instead. 😔

First of all.. HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!
Second of all... I always have a black forest gateaux for my birthday. Yum. I just buy frozen ones though as I like them. I've seen them on a few cake shops or little cake stall things that you see in shopping centers. Hopefully you find one and enjoy it :)
