I want rich dark chocolate sponge. I want cherries soaked in kirsch. I want proper whipped cream.

Where can I buy such a dream concoction? Supermarket versions are lightweight.

Am I imagining things, or did it used to be spelt 'gateaux' in the 70s?

Sidebeforeself · 06/09/2025 17:40

Honestly the best I ever had was in Baden Baden. It was pure heaven. But I’m not sure that helps you.

thelovelyview · 06/09/2025 18:00

I’m not keen on Patisserie Valerie stuff. We had a pile for an event and it was very average.

dementedpixie · 06/09/2025 18:01

That's the one I did! Picture in the thread

Is gateaux not the plural of gateau?

It's my favourite cake ever. I make my own. I've recently been diagnosed as celiac and the first thing I thought of was that for my next birthday I won't be able to have black forest 😭

Yes you will just use a duck egg to replace two hens eggs and it will hold together better (obviously gluten free flour)

Wow! So it seems. I am sure shop-bought BFGs back then were labelled gateaux!

Espressoicecream · 06/09/2025 18:11

Ive always liked the Iceland one...!

Movinghouseatlast · 06/09/2025 18:17

Delia recipe, Return to the Black Forest, is an easy take on it as it's a roulade.

I'd make a Devils Food Cake recipe.and fill it with cherries and cream. I've never tasted a mass-produced cake that's as nice as homemade. As someone else said a deconstructed version would be easy.

MinnieBaldock · 06/09/2025 18:22

I made a black forest pavlova that went down well.

Oh god you’ve just reminded me that I’m a terrible wife.

DH’s mother would get him a Black Forest Gateau for this birthday every year; he didn’t tell me this until recently (his DM passed away only a few months into our relationship) and I promised him I could carry on the tradition.. his birthday recently passed and I bloody forgot 🙃
He hasn’t even mentioned it which makes me feel worse 🤣 like he silently sad I didn’t keep my promise and he also thinks I’m a terrible wife!

It’s not too late to go grab one and say sorry is it?!😅

@Obsesetits not too late! Have a date night with that as the surprise pudding (if you can find it make one).

MikeRafone · 06/09/2025 18:34

I get cherries from a tin and soak them in kirsch. I use Mary Berry and Deliah recipe which is half and half - I use the cherries and the fresh whipped cream. Haven't made for about 5/6 years though

StuckInHospitalBored · 06/09/2025 18:36

Many years ago Waitrose used to do an amazing Black Forest gateau, complete with kirsch soaked cherries,
confectioners custard (now called crème patissiere I think) and lashings of fresh cream. It was amazing. Doesn’t really help you though OP, I haven’t had decent one for years

I made one for dhs birthday one year. I used tinned cherries and had to buy the kirsch online for it. Was delicious, if I do say so myself 😆

That looks absolutely superb. No scrimping on the cream! It looks authentically retro in a really good way as well.

JohnBullshit · 06/09/2025 18:40

I don't rate the PV Black Forest Gateau. I had the M&S frozen one for my own birthday a couple of years ago, and it was pretty good. My requirements are a bit skewed by the forêt noire cakes I used to get from a French bakery, which must be 40 years ago now. Still a treasured memory.

Use gluten free flour in the recipe. There's loads of GF options these days

Black Forest gateaux is gluten free - there isn't flour in the Sainsbury recipe linked above

MikeRafone · 06/09/2025 18:46

sorry it does have flour - look at Delilah's recipe back to the Black Forest as that is flourless www.deliaonline.com/recipes/collections/easy-entertaining/a-return-to-the-black-forest

TheChosenTwo · 06/09/2025 18:49

Deconstructed. Chocolate cake, cream, cherries, dark chocolate and kirsch.
Not unknown here when I get a sweet craving, minus the booze.
