Also watching @Grumpyoldpersonwithcats really enjoyed Bohemian Rhapsody and singing along with My Fair Lady

Hats off to you for attending MsJinks.

I'm currently watching the last night of the proms on the telly. I'm sure that most of the Yaxley-Lennon marchers will have gone straight there to support the British Culture that they are so keen to defend.

Mind you they'd probably throw their hands up in horror as the conductor Elim Chan is both a woman and 'forrin' 😲

A friend - who is a nice woman in all other ways - has posted about how it’s ok for middle class people to wave flags at the Proms, but working class people outside are castigated for doing the same. I’ve not responded because I don’t think it would make anything better but surely she can understand the difference? And also categorising those groups by class is problematic.

MaybeNotBob · 13/09/2025 21:25

If she thinks the Promenaders in the Arena are all "middle class", she's obviously never been...

cardibach · 13/09/2025 21:28

Well quite @MaybeNotBob
Shes a musician and singer too, so it’s surprised me more. She was one of the people who upset me with her attitudes on tour so I suspect she has an agenda.

Evenstar · 13/09/2025 21:28

I fear she must be a bit dim @cardibach if she can’t see any differences other than class between those two groups 🤣

It’s the fact she’s not that is a worry. I d9nt 7nderstand it. I knew she was a Tory but ffs.

Edited

I'm actually watching partly to see if the flag waving is more muted this year than usual. I suspect it might be.

Evenstar · 13/09/2025 21:34

That is worrying, I had a voluntary role at a cat rescue last year which I gave up for various reasons, but one of them was that people there expressed really offensive views to me as though they thought I would agree with them and started posting Reform stuff on Facebook.

My son had someone at his house to groom his cat and they started spouting stuff about “illegals” and he was really shocked as he had said nothing that would lead them to think he held those views. They seemed to think it was perfectly acceptable.

cardibach · 13/09/2025 21:37

It seems to be so widespread @Evenstar. I don’t know how to counter it.

Evenstar · 13/09/2025 21:45

It’s very difficult, I think I made a small impact with a couple of young women the other week, they are insecurely housed and understandably upset about their situation. I was able to explain that a local hotel is only housing Afghans and their families who assisted the British in Afghanistan.

They had been led to believe they were “boat people” when I explained that wasn’t the case, they both felt that was only fair and we had a further discussion and agreed it was very unfair that two groups of vulnerable people were have having to compete against each other due to a lack of social housing.

Sometimes you can make a difference.

I’m watching it too.

loved the Queen set with Brian May.

and love seeing British culture being celebrated and so diverse.

Evenstar · 13/09/2025 22:00

Actually seeing a lot of EU flags and from other European countries at the Proms

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 13/09/2025 22:02

Well I think it's clear that a mix of flags has been encouraged. Loads of EU ones visible 😁.
This really seems to me to be an example of the best of British culture - think about your actions and be reasonable.

PickAChew · 13/09/2025 22:03

I don't get chance to watch it. I used to love it when I did.

I think there is a greater sense of people saying out loud what they believe that everyone has thought all along with no awareness that it's far from everyone. Even people close to me are buying the line about "them" destroying the lovely hotels etc etc. Those little prejudices borne out of ignorance and based on no direct observation or experience that used to be so easily and gently picked apart have been magnified by the current media and online narrative.

And, as we've seen, it's not just race and immigration that are being subject to this "free speech" fad. It's worrying. Terrifying, in fact.

I've had to unfriend two people this week because of those views. People I thought were normal and decent.

And you're brave, @MsJinks . My DD is in London tonight celebrating a friend's birthday (at her house fortunately). My DD is the only white person in that friendship group - and the others have had to take precautions travelling through London today to make sure they were safe. It was scary.

Just came to say it was lovely to see all the different gangs as they played land of hope and glory.

Not the best photo but it’s of my tv as the camera panned!

Brilliant last night at the proms. Still lot's of Euro flags amongst Irish, Welsh Scottish and other countries. No st George flags.

A lovely and tender rendition of God Save The King. Bill Bailey did The Typewriter by Leroy Anderson and well My fair Lady.

Such a glorious celebration of music from all over the world and a wonderful way to unify and bring calm.

placemats · 13/09/2025 22:55

Forgot Bohemian Rhapsody tribute.

PickAChew · 13/09/2025 23:12

Bill Bailey sums up difference between the last night of the proms and the flag shaggers quite nicely
And there’s a really quite a unique atmosphere, I think, unlike anything else I’ve ever been to, because it feels like this is more about what music should be.
‘I think it’s very inclusive, it’s got a feeling that it’s for everyone, people kind of make almost like a pilgrimage to it, you see people sitting outside wanting to get in.
‘There’s a sense of celebration, of fun, of like this is a sort of British institution really, and it feels like quite an honour to be part of it.

Notonthestairs · 13/09/2025 23:15

What a great, positive, inclusive quote @PickAChew

AndWhoShallISayIsCalling · 14/09/2025 10:11

Not sure if this is true or a joke - but a preferable alternative nonetheless!

My wife just told me about a thing where people are colouring in England flags to make them look like slices of Battenberg cake, how marvellous

@Msjinks I've been watching some of the footage of the YL thugs trying to break through to get at the counter-demonstrators. Very scary, you are brave. The police did a good job, especially considering the size of the crowd.
