Most people care more about the economy and migration. Yet the leader of the opposition chose to focus on that.

Much as I think a career diplomat should have been appointed as ambassador.

I think it's a fair enough thing to focus on as it's topical and not a good look for Labour to pretend it didn't happen.

BIossomtoes · 10/09/2025 17:37

PandoraSocks · 10/09/2025 17:30

Agree.

It was a huge mistake appointing him in the first place. If ever a seasoned career diplomat was needed there it’s now.

Waves from across the Ionian. (We’re in Sicily. Ignoring all the ‘news’ for now)

Respectfully, I disagree. Trump isn't someone who can be treated within the confines of what went before. We knew that from 2016-2020. I mean the fucker instigated an insurrection for fucks sake. What "diplomat" can deal with that ? Look at how "diplomacy" has fared these past months.

With congress a memory, and the Supreme Court being measured to see how many roulette wheels it can hold, I think it's safe to say we ain't in Kansas anymore.

No that was the decade on ghastly album "Tango in the Night."

Obviously, I need a taxi.

If a career diplomat can’t deal with him Mandelson certainly won’t be able to.

I’m beginning to think freedom of speech actually equates “freedom to incite hate” and has nothing to do with debate or the truth.

im getting really angry now at how this is playing out. People are literally destroying the values we uphold in some kinda attempt to change the narrative.

That picture of the man convicted in Belfast has also boiled my piss.

These aren’t some kind of freedom fighter. They are thugs - thugging

Yes, but also, freedom 'from' those values, in the pursuit of one thing only - personal happiness and gratification. How many times do you hear the people who like the flag aesthetic, stating their right to display 'their' flag? The pursuit of what an individual wants is eroding the foundations of citizenship that requires an understanding of mutual respect and tolerance. That and the shortening of attention spans.

Sam Freedman

Nice timing that Tim Allan has been brought in as Director of Comms a week before this blows up given he was deputy comms director for Blair when Mandelson was getting into trouble the first time around.

Maybe my memory of Mandelsons work in Northern Ireland is too rosey.

I thought Major and Mowlem did the hard yards there.

I agree it was an awful album. If there ever was a band with only one excellent album, it was Fleetwood Mac.

Oh quite. But wasn't the Prince of Darkness working in the shadows a bit ?

I have to admit I forgot he'd been involved in scandal before !!! But given what came after it's understandable.

He is sooo slippery.

Btw I went down an little rabbit hole re: Eva Peron and her birth certificate, so thanks for mentioning it. Really interesting.

Wait till you read about her death ....

Indeed. Lots of shenanigans with her corpse. Imagine having the corpse of the dead wife of your husband hanging around at home, really bizarre. They didn't have that bit in Evita.

PandoraSocks · 10/09/2025 18:15

Just saw this on X:

Bridget Phillipson's camp believe she's now passed the 80 MP nomination threshold - comfortably - to be on the ballot for deputy Labour leader.

DuncinToffee · 10/09/2025 15:52

I missed PMQs but is sounds like Badenoch did well with her questions about Mandelson and Epstein.

The thing is that the Royal Family, who no-one is going to criticise in Parliament, has a person who was a very close friend of Epstein. And eye watering payments were made regarding compensation.

It's all very well for Badenoch to pursue a single issue but this wasn't that because she was heavily promoted in delivering the questions that she did. Score draw and I'm sure she'll take it.

I can't stand Mandelson. He's a grifter. No more than Johnson and Farage. All dodgy.

What even with her black bob haircut? Maybe she can write a song to win us (the public) over!

Karistyleaftea · 10/09/2025 19:17

.That piece in the Mail is pathetic
We must have time travelled backwards.
Our PM has an increasingly difficult line to hold.
The minute he sacked Mandelson the cry would go up "Why are we welcoming Trump?" They appear to be cut from the same cloth.
If the BBC and other media had spent a tiny percent of the time they have on trashing our women MP's investigating and exposing Johnson, Farage, Cummings et al the UK would today be a different, better place .
In my opinion.
I'm no fan of Mandelson btw. I remember a horrible ,nasty interaction between him and a young female interviewer a long time ago.

Notonthestairs · 10/09/2025 20:29

I’ve only just seen the weird Letts headline 🤢 what the fuck is that about?
Reminded me of Clarkson’s misogynistic ramblings about Megan Markle and Nicola Sturgeon.

Talking of creepy, Starmer should dump Mandleson. I’m sure there are better candidates w/o 10 page BFF letters to a rapist.

deeahgwitch · 10/09/2025 20:36

Firstly just to say I am not British and don’t live in the UK but take an interest in our nearest neighbour’s politics and I was gobsmacked when I heard Peter Mandleson was appointed UK Ambassador to the US.
I thought there would be a furore about it and was really surprised that there wasn’t.
Was he really the best man for the job I thought, is there really nobody else Starmer could choose.
Bizarre.

PandoraSocks · 10/09/2025 20:37

I have only just read the Mail article. 😲

I now understand @goldenbear 's post.😄

Bizarre.

It wasn't the best decision. Mandelson has to go.
