A brand new shiny thread. Whether you want to do one extra thing a day, or a brain dump of what you have to do this is the place.

Hello from the funny in between days. Doing some nice things with D and my mum (eg going to the ballet) and trying to give her plenty of downtime and playing with the grandparents so we get a break. She's reorganised her closet with grandma's help and identified many items of clothing that she'd either outgrown or doesn't like any more, so that was a useful task achieved without my input! 🎉

Having one set of friends over tomorrow for NYE, very civilised!

SunnyViper · 30/12/2025 19:49

@SingleThreadJoiner2 hello! A funny in between day here too. I pretty much left the kids to it today(they are all older anyway). I spent the day in the garden with my partner and we did some of the jobs that we had been putting off due to the poor weather. I had fun playing with the leaf blower and then replanted around 20 self sown hollys I to what will hopefully become a new hedge. Then curled up in front of the TV as my legs were aching.

some kids are in tomorrow and others are out at various parties. For the ones staying home, I bought a murder mystery and escape room to do before going to bed not long after midnight!

mumofoneAloneandwell · 30/12/2025 20:16

@SingleThreadJoiner2 that sounds like a lovely use of the in-between days. Civilised grown up new years ftw!

Mine will be in bed with dd tbh, will see if we can see the fireworks from our flat. Thought about going to ally pally to see the fireworks but honestly cba

@SunnyViper your nye sounds lovely too, but omg gardening sounds exhausting!

We went out today! Popped to ikea and argos. Dd is super interested in 'making ice cream' games on her tablet, so have bought some playdoh ice cream/cake bake sets for her - so far she seems to like it, although i need to support her in playing

Got some pre mixes margaritas on sale so might make a night of it, depending on if dd sleeps early enough 😌

Love to all 🥰

Mumtobabyhavoc · 30/12/2025 20:29

Have just done a frustrated tidy of dc's toys after asking for the past half hour and threatening garbaging. Tears from Havoc as three went into box for donation. Two went into keepsake box (baby's first rattle and a pull toy). Put paper mail into files. Load of laundry just finished and needs to be hung up. Dishwasher on. Garbaged some decos. Poinsettias to yard waste next. Must rush to doctor appt in about 15.

WinterFrogs · 30/12/2025 20:45

Hello! Nearly the new year. I have high hopes for this one. Last year was full of uncertainty but things have become clearer.
It shot by though!!
Tomorrow I really must clean out my car. And wash it. It gets filthy on the lanes.
Best wishes to all 💕

Happy New Year’s Eve from sunny Dubai. Although it’s been really windy the last few days. But due to calm down from lunchtime today.

Hotel is gearing up for huge gala dinner tonight in various locations. We are doing the basic one on the beach. With another 1200 people apparently. We could upgrade to more VIP experiences for the extra cost of £700. Per person. We declined. 😄

Apparently our hotel’s fireworks start a minute before midnight to start before the ones at the two Atlantis hotels next to us. Maroon 5 are playing at the Atlantis next door.

I was hoping we could see the fireworks from our balcony so we could come up early but we are on the wrong side of the hotel.

Anyway. Hope everyone has a peaceful end to 2025. See you all in 2026.

FourSeasonsLobelia · 31/12/2025 08:53

Hi all- wishing you all the most joyous and peaceful 2026.

We'll be home tonight. i am making a curry and we will probably watch netflix!

Peridot1 · 31/12/2025 09:44

Sounds like a perfect NY @FourSeasonsLobelia

RunningKatie · 31/12/2025 12:59

Happy NYE all. Hope you all have a lovely evening - I imagine the fireworks in Dubai will be a spectacle to see.
I'm working on my resolutions, think I'm ditching Duolingo as I'm becoming a slave to it and it doesn't bring me joy.
Tonight the dc and I are off to see Wicked pt2, then home to play Uno, Exploding Kittens and anything else we can do without referring to rules!

WinterFrogs · 31/12/2025 13:33

Argh @Peridot1 i forgot you were going to Dubai and for some reason i thought you were going to Ireland. So that's why you have been doing nyt puzzles before me the last couple of days! ( I notice the regulars on those threads all tend to post at consistent times of the day!) Have a great time!
I'm feeling a bit warm and definitely headachy and as a number of people around me have had the lurgy, I am wondering if I'm next.

DH is muttering about taking the Christmas tree down today. I'm going to read one of my Christmas novels and watch, if he does.

I've had a housework fail and have not changed bed sheets for a couple of weeks so i must do that today.

Have a lovely evening whatever you are doing, everyone!

Hi again,

@RunningKatie I have also ditched duolingo. But I have put permanent subtitles on the language I was studying (Russian) on netflix where available and this is proving incredibly useful. I did a year of Russian at university way way way back in the day so thought it would be fun to reinvigorate.

Dubai sounds great!

Have to do bedclothes too today, but 'in theory' I always do ours Thursday and DCs Mondays so it can wait until tomorrow. In practice, well, it's more like every second week tbh.

I am pleased with myself because I have found a crucial bit of missing tax info so DH has now completed our taxes. Turns out I mis-filed it so i have also rearranged all our files.

DS1 randomly decided to vacuum upstairs (after I accidentally emptied the hole punch cache all over the floor) so i decided to leave him to it.

New Years resolutions- well, this year I want to wring every single bit of joy out of the year that I can, for me and the family. So, more cinema. More days out for coffee and cake. Really plan and execute a family holiday in the summer. Less time on social media and MN and more time engaged with life.

Much love to you all on our lovely thread. Smile

Happy New Year to all! We’re back visiting the oldies until the weekend. DS has joined us today bless him. Not exactly rock and roll here! Double care home visit today for dad and my stepmother and tomorrow it’s the elderly aunt and unwell uncle visits. Today’s excitement is that my dad’s blue badge application has finally been approved.
Raising a glass to you all! 🥂

Peridot1 · 01/01/2026 07:16

Happy New Year all.

@WinterFrogs - yes Dubai not Ireland. So definitely a time difference for early morning puzzles. Not sure I mentioned it was Dubai as it can be quite divisive on MN!

Gala Dinner was really good. You know you are in Dubai when you are queuing for the sushi counter at the buffet and almost being knocked over by kids at the oysters and lobster counter! We lasted until midnight and the fireworks were amazing. The music was great all night. I did lots of chair dancing. Sitting that is not standing! The woman at the table next to me was doing the same. I did end up dancing with a woman from a table behind us towards the end of the night. I love a boogie. She was British and a doctor and was there with family celebrating her FIL’s 80. He was there wearing a Christmas jumper. There was full on glam and casual and everything in between.

All in all a really good night. Not sure I’d want to do it every year but it was an amazing experience.

Today’s task is recovering, reading and starting a 100 squats a day challenge. I think I might work up to 100 though.

WinterFrogs · 01/01/2026 11:55

Good news about the blue badge @petalpower 💙 They make such a difference!
Your holiday sounds lovely @Peridot1 and you did mention it before as part of your Christmas plans I think!
We'll be going back to work for a rest as we've helped out a lot with the horses this week 🦄 Excellent for keeping fit though and cheaper than the gym. Could do without having to repair broken fences though....and there was ice in all the troughs today ( but no mud as it froze solid) Swing and roundabouts..
I wrote a post hours ago and lost it, which is quite an achievement as it's much harder to do that than it used to be.
Suffice to say it was about new year resolutions and clean living, after we've finished all the Christmas sweets.
Tree is down. DH and littlest sorted that out. She did a lovely job of packing the decorations away in a big box 💕

This afternoon I must reset for tomorrow as I need to be out early. The house currently looks very untidy but it won't take long to sort out.

Cats need flea treatments ( no fleas, just preventative)

I hope you are all having a nice day!

WinterFrogs · 01/01/2026 12:00

Ooh squats @Peridot1 ! I've been doing a few of those...maybe 40 over the course of a day. Supposed to ward off all sorts of terrible things. See also: planks. I might see if I can go up to 100. We can cheer each other on!

Peridot1 · 01/01/2026 12:34

Squats are great @WinterFrogs. Although my knees might not agree. It’s a challenge set by my personal trainer. I tend to start off all enthusiastic and it wanes a bit. 25 so far today. I’m aiming for 50 today I think.

WinterFrogs · 01/01/2026 14:11

Yes I have to watch my knees a bit too @Peridot1 😔
I was reading an article that suggested that cycling is really good for knees as it strengthens the muscles around them. I wonder if doing squats with the correct form has a similar effect.
I think i damaged mine when I had a fit of 'just one thinging' and did some skipping. I am just not made for some activities, clearly. They are better than they were though.

RunningKatie · 01/01/2026 18:57

I had a PT about 18 months ago who wrecked my knees with her insistence on squats. Took ages for them to improve again.
I've uninstalled Duolingo! Wuhoo, I'm free!
Tomorrow is dinner with extended family, it's going to be interesting. I think that's the polite way to describe it. I'm trying to keep out of the dramas, I just don't want to be dragged into.
