A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government.

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

Rain? It was so hot and sunny here this morning that I had to cut my morning run short, because I was overheating! You must be in the west (I'm in the east).

Good comment piece in The Times this morning by Camilla Long, which I wholeheartedly agree with. What did Angela Rayner actually do for this country? Pretty much bugger all and if her lasting legacy is the toxic Workers Rights Bill, then that pretty much sums things up, as it's going to utterly shaft business and do yet further damage to the economy of this country. A lasting legacy to be proud of there Ange, you self-serving tax-dodger.

Thanks for the link. She is spot on here. My favourite paragraph:-

Of her actual record, of course: no hint. She was the perfect deputy prime minister for him: a politician allowed to rise to the top on personality alone. And that personality was: middle-class person’s idea of what a working-class person should be. Slobby, ribald, partying in ’Beefa — isn’t vaping on inflatables what working-class people all do? Spoiler alert: it isn’t. Most working-class people are insulted to be compared to her.

This is exactly how I feel about Rayner. I am also a wc, northern woman done good, with the exact same accent btw.

(Yes, soggy North West here).

Downing Street have u-turned on the sacking of Ian Murray. Yesterday Labour sent out releases saying Murray had left the Government. Cue a massive backlash. Today, Murray is back in Government and has two jobs

Eh?
God they couldn't organise a piss up in a brewery could they. What's happening with Douglas Alexander then? Have they put him back on the train?

I’d never heard of her either. She is definitely proceed able as another leader. I need to look more but on first bits of research - very good., well, excellent.

Particularly interesting was the bit of her background which said her grandparents met whilst canvassing for the Labour Party. How Labour have fallen since those days.

I didn't know that about her parents.
She's young too, mid thirties I think? She has loads of potential. One to watch.

Interestingly we also have The mayor of Manchester, Andy Burnham similar wc background but doesn’t fit the brief because he went to Cambridge- and is a real threat to I’m a tool makers son Starmer. Burnham is much brighter.

Ps. I’m from the NW wc too. But not that accent. When I go back up my brother and sister have long told me to ‘stop talking posh’ (not posh afaic but having not lived there for over 30years the accent has softened a bit!), but then down south they tell me to pronounce bath and path correctly. What can we do 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️😉

Her grand parents. So post war holocaust survivor grand mother I think.

That van and flag tweet will still be there

Also the thing that got her sacked: saying it was fine for class sizes in state schools to rise due to VAT on independent school fees.

😂😂 I lived in Newbury for a bit when I first got married. I felt like an exhibit at times. I know what you mean about bath and path! I was a TA at the time, and the kids had great fun with my accent.

Interesting about Burnham. I think maybe he is proud of his roots, but doesn't use it as an excuse?

Ha, my (Midlands') long vowels are softening (hardening?) the longer I'm up here. I'm probably 95:5 as to using long:short vowels in words like bath and path! I've been up here for 17 years this year.

I'm definitely not from round here, though. 🤣

twistyizzy · 07/09/2025 13:07

I have a hybrid accent of: West Yorkshire, London, RP and NE 🤣🤣
Everyone struggles to place me. Had a strong Yorks accent until I moved to London

Arrearing50 · 07/09/2025 13:11

The Murray sacking and reinstating - their uselessness continues - i could’ve told you that Murray was genuinely popular in Edinburgh as a long term committed MP who was the only lab MP in a sea of SNP for many years.

pushing him aside to shoe-in Douglas Alexander smacked of Westminster cronyism. Not a good look…

they’re just so politically talentless. I’m glad Murray has another job because he is at least not one of these new stands for nothing and out in 4 and onto their social media career MPS…

DenizenOfAisleOfShame · 07/09/2025 13:16

It seems Ian Murray is now a minister within both Culture and DSIT. God knows why sacked ministers accept these baubles. It looks pathetic. Not as pathetic as spineless Starmer caving as soon as Scottish Labour grumbled, but pathetic nonetheless.

Murray must know that he’s been given a short-term lease on a ministerial car and driver, and that’s his lot. How undignified not just to take a seat on the backbenches.

I have an image of the king scratching his head and asking for some tippex 😂.

Phase 2 is already a resounding success. They've only been back for a week.

Hhmmm can't see that in any press

DenizenOfAisleOfShame · 07/09/2025 17:56

Seems unlikely. There aren’t enough of them to pull from key military work, and what would they do anyway?

Of course it might be a Starmer-inspired ‘hard man’ line, like his “standing army of police” last year.

That’s an Express article. It’s not very good. I think it reports on the military being asked to find barrack space. The defending borders bit is mixed in misleadingly.

Yes but I see that’s a near quote from Def Secretary John Healey 🤷‍♀️

DenizenOfAisleOfShame · 07/09/2025 18:09

It doesn’t say much more, TBH.

I do think this is cack-handed Starmer bullshit. They’ll keep coming and the government will keep failing until off-shore processing is back on the table…

Agreed.. that’ll be a long while yet tho..
