Labour isn't working - Thread 7

A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government.

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

Someone on another thread recommended this book. Looks like a worthwhile read.

’I would recommend a read of Jonathan Haidt's book The Righteous Mind: Why Good People are Divided by Politics and Religion.

His research and the research of others seems to confirm that people on the "left" are more intolerant of the views of others and inclined to be more judgmental and self-righteous than those on the "right" - who are more likely to listen to views other than their own without moral condemnation.’

Sadly I guess no cure for the affliction.

I bought that recently but haven’t started it yet. He was another Leading interview back in June and was plugging his newer book, The Anxious Generation, but spoke a lot of sense about the inclination of the left towards self righteousness.

Oof! He sounds angry doesn't he. He's right, Labour are actively helping Reform.
At least the Guardian aren't defending Labour anymore. MN appears to be their last remaining stronghold. I don't think any of the papers are on their side now, rightly so.

Yes - it’s weird that the orthodoxy here on MN is lagging behind RL.
Even friends who previously were lefties are now completely over this shower of Labour ‘government’.
The ones who can’t quite bring themselves to admit that Reform is the only party that have anything like policies that b people actually want are making pale Green noises
(tho’ holding their noses with the circus now coming to town with the new co leader), but most are now openly saying that, yeah of there were an election tomorrow, if there is a Reform candidate we’ll vote for them.
Yet…. here on MN, the usual suspects are clinging to their student politics and trying to defend the indefensible.

Yes. MN supporters are the 1% of the population who think the country is in a better place than last year 🙄 that 1% is concentrated within MN. The other 99% are living in the real world

The whataboutery and twisting into pretzels to support Labour makes me laugh / roll my eyes! It amuses me that they think that because we think what AR did was resignation-worthy, we support Tories caught doing similar. Which shows their mindset really. You can think MPs of all parties should resign when caught breaking the Ministerial Code, you don't have to blindly support the party you voted for (or the Labour supporters think you voted for, at least)!

I think they are their own support group. They need the Labour loyalty at all costs, they need the posts from others to confirm what they’re trying to convince themselves of. Confirmation bias I suppose.

A Group Think situation where the desire for group harmony and consensus overrides critical thinking..

‘Belief in Inherent Morality:
The group believes in its own righteousness and views outsiders as inferior or misguided.

Stereotyping Outsiders:
Opposing groups or individuals are perceived negatively, making it easier to disregard their ideas.

Direct Pressure on Dissenters:
Members who express doubts or challenge the group's consensus are pressured to conform.

Self-Censorship:
Individuals suppress their own doubts or alternative viewpoints to avoid conflict or disagreement.

Illusion of Unanimity:
A belief is created that everyone in the group agrees, even when this isn't the case.

Self-Appointed "Mindguards":
Some members protect the group from information or ideas that could challenge the group's views. ‘

Scarily accurate.

I think it’s a quirk of this site. It started a while back where everyone not Labour was attacked as a ‘bot’ and mocked etc, it’s just the same posters.

Steve Reed (our new housing minister) headed up Labour's Anti Development Campaign in 2021, against Robert Jenrick's proposed planning reforms. Has he had a change of heart?
There's always a tweet...

Absolutely brilliant!

My favourite so far has been Darren Jones’s tweet bitterly attacking the Tories for considering cuts to WFA…

From the telegraph -

Angela Rayner’s family home was increased in value by more than £150,000 after an “error” by lawyers.

The value of the property in Ashton-under-Lyne was raised from £487,500 to £650,000 in April 2024, official documents seen by this newspaper show.

Months later, Ms Rayner sold her stake in the home to a trust set up for her disabled son for £162,500 – the same amount as the increase in property price.

The increase in cost meant that their house was worth nearly twice as much as other properties on the street.

The increase in price was made after lawyers from Swiitch, the conveyancing arm of Shoosmiths, the law firm appointed by the court to run the trust for Ms Rayner’s disabled son, wrote to the Land Registry in April 2024.

They apologised for an “original error” that meant the house had been registered at only 75 per cent of its value and formally applied for this higher value to be listed.

At the time of the valuation error, Ms Rayner was being investigated over questions of whether she paid the correct tax on a former council house she used to own in Stockport. She was later cleared of any wrongdoing.

Quote from the podcast:

“So the little scoopette is, I understand the one bit of the reshuffle that did not go Keir Starmer's way is he very much wanted to move Ed Miliband to Angela Rayner's brief of housing and communities. And Ed Miliband dug in and said, no, he wants to continue with the energy and climate change brief.”

They also said that there is an expectation that the Workers Rights legislation will be watered down (Kyle is perceived as more pro business than others) and that McFadden will try to push through Welfare Reform again.

Yes it's interesting he has brought in more right leaning ministers. At same time as the left will be piling pressure on, cracks are already starting. Starmer doesn't have the personal attributes to walk that tightrope I don't think, certainly no charisma to charm people.
Will be very very interesting.

Yes I also read about McFadden & welfare reform, but if they couldn’t push it through last time how will they get it through now?
