Labour isn't working - Thread 7

A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government.

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

And yes I can see both sides ref different views and voices. On balance, having thought about it, I prefer this to be our own echo chamber / sanctuary of sanity. There’s enough of everything else on MN as you said NH. Best just to let things slide / not get into debates which bring back ptsd from previous times.. certainly never be nasty like they are over the road, but politely engage / ignore instead.

I wanted to create a 'safe space' on an otherwise left-leaning site. Labour supporters also have their 'safe space' and I respect that.

I'm always intrigued by this, is MNs really left leaning? I would say it's quite right leaning. I didn't know threads were safe spaces, how does one foster that?

AR position is surely untenable now, very stupid to make such a mistake.

Labour has 11% approval rating atm and 70% against. On many who would you vote for threads that’s not replicated.

sundayfundayclub · 03/09/2025 19:51

But that a true representation of MNs? voting threads? I don't think I go on many labour threads so perhaps don't see this side but do frequent general political threads & general ones which imo to tend to skew right.

Interested in this thread?

Then you might like threads about this subject:

But should the OP say this thread is echo chamber?

I clicked on the thread only to see the chat about AR.

I don’t think so. Only recently would I not be quoted to oblivion by Labour posters. Hence this nicer thread.

sundayfundayclub · 03/09/2025 20:00

We will have to agree to disagree on that.

How do you keep a thread nice? If a labour stan came on this thread & expressed a differing opinion would they be pushed out?

I fully appreciate arguing is tiresome & have often left threads because the bickering derails the thread and it's boring. Equally I do find it interesting to read differing viewpoints & don't really think echo chambers are healthy.

I think the point is that there is a whole site / internet with other views. 🤷‍♀️

@TheNuthatch ‘s threads are a comfort away from the crazy / bitter / unpleasant generally.

sundayfundayclub · 03/09/2025 20:04

I dislike the way politics is so divisive now and as I'm not aligned to any political party I feel a bit adrift as partisan politics is not attractive to me.

These have been running for a while, it seems ok

I think what 'skewing right' is, is quite subjective. Bearing in mind that those of us who support protecting women's rights are called 'far right' and 'Nazi', it's hard to know what is meant by the 'right'.

sundayfundayclub · 03/09/2025 20:05

Tbf that happens on lots of threads unfortunately regardless of the topic.

Exactly

sundayfundayclub · 03/09/2025 20:06

@NoWordForFluffy that's a fair point, although of course "skewing left" can also be subjective. I am not a fan of the gender crap.

These threads aren't aligned to a political party. The only criteria is 'not Labour'. Though some parties are more attractive than others! I may vote Green if their leader can increase my breast size! /jk

On the last part there’s so many threads with the usual political wrangle it’s easy to dip in and out if that’s what people want.

But this one is just a side step from that which works for us and is fine.

All the more reason that this one is a lovely little refuge!

sundayfundayclub · 03/09/2025 20:09

But that's why my interest was piqued because I think the idea of a safe space regardless of the topic is quite a nice idea. Some threads get so horrible now.

Edited

I agree, MN has become a massive Keir Starmer fan club for now, it’s great to find a safe space away from them.

Absentmindedsmile · 03/09/2025 20:13

Anyway I was talking with a friend yesterday who said (with their inside knowledge source that shall remain so!) the Conservatives are hoping Cleverly will be PM at some point. They like KB but she’s not likeable enough to the electorate it seems.

TheNuthatch · 03/09/2025 20:35

@sundayfundayclub First of all welcome. I can see why some think that MN has an even split of right and left views. Maybe it is getting that way now, but that certainly has not been the case. The amount of abuse and pile ons I have suffered on here, simply for being a tory! I refer you to how the political threads operated pre the GE last year. It was awful. Others have suffered horrendous name calling etc because their dc are at private school. If I am in the mood for debating, I go on other threads. If I want to discuss Kemi B with another person who won't automatically hate her because she's a tory, I ask on here.
I don't know (or ask) how other regular posters vote, but we all really dislike Labour. That was quite a rarity on MN until quite recently. I was/am a big fan of Sunak. I can say that on here without being attacked.
I don't agree with everyone/everything I read on this thread either, but we don't attack each other. Think of it as a bun fight free zone for those who lean centre to right. If you can cope with an awful lot of Starmer being slagges off, you are more than welcome to join us anytime. Thank you for being polite and questioning with respect.

Really good post. Agree entirely, really appreciate the threads 😀

EmpressoftheMundane · 03/09/2025 21:00

I don’t need a safe space, but I do sometimes want to work things out with like minded people. I want to process politics and current events without the tiresomeness of strawmen; faux naivety; no true scottsmen; etc.

I go on other threads and get exposed to other opinions, but sometimes it gets boring for me, like arguing with children or drunk people. Why bother?

I stumbled on a thread with a cat tax, it seemed to be a friendly chat with some current affairs thrown in. I realised it was a cosy group who all leaned left. I didn’t feel the need to lecture or challenge. I let them crack on. There are plenty of threads for debate.

Absentmindedsmile · 03/09/2025 21:17
