A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government.

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

Good morning 😁

Love your rants @twistyizzy. The truth will out eventually. I hope BP wins, the more spotlight on her, the better imo.

No.10 have backed Mandy, or 'Petie' as Epstein called him 🤮. He has their full confidence apparently.

That's fair enough but trust me some journos have looked into it. I accept that without concrete evidence it's un provable. She has come under very little scrutiny so far and has flown under the radar.

I really do think this sort of thing should be ignored. The implication is of nepotism and backroom deals, which there’s absolutely no evidence for.

The left did this with Baroness Owen and Boris Johnson (I’ve even seen Stanley Johnson mentioned in MN posts!).

It’s very unpleasant and I’m not going to stoop to the level of the left.

MaturingCheeseball · 10/09/2025 09:59

It’s appalling how few contenders have had a job. A proper job. Have any worked in the private sector? A local councillor is not a job. They might believe so, but when I rule the world (if only!) I am going to undertake a root and branch review of local government and no.1 on my list is the bloated number of councillors and their very generous “allowances”. I fear taxpayers have no idea what some are raking in. And if you saw some of the councillors! In this area some have dementia - there is a shortage of candidates so the head honcho just gets any old (really old!) party member to stand.

I don't think a name can be removed from a birth certificate and I think we should be careful,...there seems to be no truth to this claim.

I accept that but some journos have tried to find information out as much has been scrubbed and that was 1 of their findings. Will leave it there though now

Absentmindedsmile · 10/09/2025 10:05

No stone will be left unturned if she’s in the spotlight.. let’s see.

I’ll join you. There are 82 councillors in my area and they run this bureaucratic system within 28 committees. Each party actually has a “chief whip” who gets paid a higher allowance for organising their councillors across the different committees.

twistyizzy · 10/09/2025 10:07

I completely accept I am hardly impartial when it comes to her but i haven't ever claimed to be 🙂
I feel about her as many people do about Thatcher.

Yep. It hasn't been disproved or denied by either party. Let's see what comes out in the future.

the bigger problem is that she can’t empathise - Bon voyage Labour!

we’ve got that, the treat of reeves compassionately delivering tax and pension blows to whoever she seems not sufficiently part of the ‘working people’ club and BP snatching EHCP money away from all those whinging middle class parents who’ve fought for their kids for years…whilst being patronised for not having severe enough needs and given some waffle about how schools can magically
suppprt moderately impaired ND kids with no money.

they’ll throw in some more ‘parents need to get onside’ rhetoric too. Because that also solves ND needs if you believe enough…

while they can look forward to what, an attack on DLA for anyone with neurodivergence whether child or adult.

yes they’re fixing it all up…

Arrearing50 · 10/09/2025 10:18

They can’t even see the parallels - it’ll be again ‘we’re targeting the money better’ -
it’s the ‘only way’ to fund it….

DancingFerret · 10/09/2025 10:28

Any bets on who will be the first eliminated from the DPM contest? Having watched her being interviewed last night, my money's on McGovern; she comes across as just too soft, wide-eyed and idealistic in the sense of wanting everyone to play nicely.

She wasn't on my radar before yesterday, so my opinion is based on first impression only; others might view her differently.

nearlylovemyusername · 10/09/2025 10:28

twistyizzy · 10/09/2025 07:31

She's also got some skeletons which it won't take the papers long to find.....interestingly hushed up. Specifically about her mums charity (which she worked at as her only job) de-frauding public money.

She's a nepo baby. Another one who never worked and just got her Dad's old seat.

Why isn't this in press? out of the entire lot she's the one I really loath the most.

Arrearing50 · 10/09/2025 10:29

Haigh surely? They be mad to go for the ‘I lost my phone oh no I didn’t’ Woman after Rayner.

also - re Mandy - SURELY Labour knew about his dodgy Epstein past and it was factored into the appointment…

I’d never heard of her. And I bet the MN leftists hadn’t either. I imagine we’ll see endless posts from the MN Starmer massive about the sparkling success of this diligent and able woman, and how they always knew she was destined for great things. 🙄

And now:The party’s July 2024 general election manifesto promised to build on the work of past Labour governments to reduce child poverty, transform life chances and “end mass dependence of food parcels,” which it described as a “moral scar on our society”.Trussell, which has 1,400 food bank outlets across the UK, said it was “increasingly clear” the government could not fulfil these manifesto promises unless it urgently tackled the “disturbingly high level” of severe hardship in many communities

I think when it comes to foodbanks they have just become part of the institutionalised welfare landscape now and will still be there whichever government is in power. Then there are the community pantries etc. They also now run add-on services at their premises such as help with debt etc. They will all keep going just because there will always be people who will use them. They are run by charities so no government can say “you aren’t needed any more”. I don’t think we will ever now reach that point.

Agreed but they put it in the manifesto..........

Ok. They will never achieve it then! It just won’t happen. The foodbanks may claim they want to put themselves “out of business” but they just have too many regular users now and that’s not going to change whatever happens to the benefits system and the economy. As some of the are run by churches it’s part of their Christian ethos too so it’s not just the demand from users that drives their existence, lots of volunteers enjoy working for them etc.

Organisations/the people in them always try to increase their remit, regardless of context or purpose. It's human nature.

Agreed. Some of them start off small, then become official charities, partner with other charities, obtain funding from charitable or local government for specific projects. It’s all just mushroomed. I’ve seen it in my local area.

DenizenOfAisleOfShame · 10/09/2025 12:37

I must admit I’ve always had doubts about the true, continuing necessity of foodbanks. As pps have said, once an organisation is running - especially a charity/welfare one - the urge to carry on and expand overcomes everything else. Plus I expect they give social opportunities to the volunteers, much like those who volunteer in charity shops.

I’m not convinced foodbanks as a whole are any index of genuine poverty.
