Anyone else hate the “ber” months?

September 1st tomorrow. I bloody hate the “ber” months. Clocks move. Cold and dark. Halloween, bonfire night & Xmas shoved down our throats at every turn.

I hate pumpkin flavoured stuff, I hate fireworks, I hate the word “autumnal.” I don’t want to get cosy with blankets and eat soup and light candles. I want to sit outside in the sun and eat salads and wear suncream.

I’m extra bitter this year because my mum died in June. Wake me up in 2026.

This post is just a rant hahaha, anyone else? Or am I alone in my end-of-year hatred?

I love love love spring and summer. Long days, warm weather, outdoor life. And I feel sad when the year turns. But there are
pleasures to be found in autumn and winter too. I enjoy seasons, seeing all the different elements of nature. I think if you try you can enjoy the whole year. Then spring is just joy when it comes after the long winter! If it was spring all year I think it would lose that element

ItsHellOrHighwater · 31/08/2025 23:21

I always feel a bit sad that summer is over as it’s lovely having the kids home, even the oldest is home from uni. It’s lovely to see them all so carefree and we’ve had such a lovely summer together. I won’t miss the hot weather though.

I quite like the cooler, but not cold weather in autumn. I like Halloween, we decorate the house for autumn and I love Christmas so I’m looking forward to that. Most birthday for us fall in Autumn and winter so it’s good for that reason too.

I’m sorry about your mum.

BeardofHagrid · 31/08/2025 23:24

Autumn and Winter make me really unwell, I get seasonal depression. The darkness, the cold and the damp are just awful.

Ratafia · 31/08/2025 23:26

Not really. It's a relief to be reasonably sure we're past the danger of more heatwaves, which is what I really hate. You can do something about cold, short of spending a fortune on air conditioning there's not much you can do about excessive heat.

Help me to understand, why do adults like Halloween?
Is it because your kids dress up and have fun or something else?

My kids have a costume competition at school where you make your costume. I’m reasonably crafty so this is fun for me. Generally a parents worst nightmare.

I decorate the outside of the house. Love that. Then the kids dress up again, go trick or treating and I have a party back in ours with several families we are friends with where I often dress up. I set up some traditional games, we have few drinks and the kids pass out after eating copious amounts of sweets.

What’s not to love?

My kids are teens and older. We use it as a reason to get together with family and friends, decorate the house, have a party. It’s fun for all of us. 🎃

I can't be bothered with Halloween stuff. We didn't do it when I was a kid and I don't bother with it now. Bonfire night is OK but usually too cold to stay out for more than a few minutes for sparklers. Christmas I would gladly forgo if it could be summer again instead. All the hassle, expense and enforced jollity.

Yes it's that for me. The tradition breaks up the dank days for the children too. Ditto Christmas. It's so flat in the two ary months. We used to go abroad February half term to break it up.

MaleficentQueen · 31/08/2025 23:38

I love September, cos it’s still kinda decent weather, still light enough, and it’s my birthday month. I love October, cos it’s my DD’s birthday month. HATE November. Always cold, rainy, and miserable. Dislike most of December, as it’s cold, dark, and long, apart from Christmas, obvs. But utterly LOATHE January and February, as they are long, cold, dark, and miserable, with bugger all to get excited about. So I’m kind of on the fence about the ‘ber months 😂

I feel you... My Mum died in April ⚘️

Mine too but I also got married in April - 3rd and 10th - so it's an odd week for me.

Cherrytree86 · 31/08/2025 23:42

all those saying they love winter are clearly privileged mumsnet types…the cost of heating these days, who could possibly prefer winter when you have to pay out for heating?? Lots of wealthy, privileged mumsnetters I guess.

Nope they are my favorite months. I hate the summer months so I’m getting excited for cooler weather and cozy nights in bed.

EverardDeTroyes · 31/08/2025 23:50

No, I like the Ber months. It is the Uary months I can't stand: January and February.

I’m peri menopausal and I’ve become very heat intolerant due to it. I had to buy air conditioning units and pay for the running costs of them to be able to function as a human. Winter will be cheaper for me.

I wear bright jumpers in the winter, scarves. Light the log burner. Put on LED candles, lamps. I know what you mean.

I run around opening, closing windows and curtains depending on where the sun is. I run a fan on my legs. Sleep really badly. I'd love Aircon but DH would hate it. In colder weather I'm happy with a rug on the sofa.

BashfulClam · 31/08/2025 23:59

I lam be Autumn but January and February are shit. Cold dark, everyone is skint and why is January about 578 days long???

HRTQueen · 01/09/2025 00:02

And why dry January, and something else in February you must give up. I want dumplings!!!

Travelfairy · 01/09/2025 00:07

I love it! The colours, the cosy evenings but mainly because my neighbours who are very bloody noisy spend less time drinking in their garden!!

Mmhmmn · 01/09/2025 00:17

I totally agree. Just the thought of leaves beginning to fall from the trees makes me a feel a bit sad. The short days and darkness And as you’ve said, the ubiquitous, aggressive Americanised marketing of Halloween and Christmas 🤮 😤
Must plan and do some nice things to counteract it all….!

FortuneFaded · 01/09/2025 00:28

I hate these months but this year I am aiming to try to like them. I probably will hate it, but I will try at least. It’s the lack of daylight I hate. I like to write and don’t like doing so with artificial lights.

Comedycook · 31/08/2025 18:34

Don't mind February as it's relatively short, the days are getting longer and you know spring is around the corner.

Yes agree, just on the cusp of hoping spring and summer will be good
