Anyone else hate the “ber” months?

Chiavennasca · 31/08/2025 18:17

September 1st tomorrow. I bloody hate the “ber” months. Clocks move. Cold and dark. Halloween, bonfire night & Xmas shoved down our throats at every turn.

I hate pumpkin flavoured stuff, I hate fireworks, I hate the word “autumnal.” I don’t want to get cosy with blankets and eat soup and light candles. I want to sit outside in the sun and eat salads and wear suncream.

I’m extra bitter this year because my mum died in June. Wake me up in 2026.

This post is just a rant hahaha, anyone else? Or am I alone in my end-of-year hatred?

I used to prefer the ‘ber months. I’m a pale red head not built for the sun but i hate the rain and wind and snow. I like being in “cosy” i like candles and i like hot chocolate and i always liked when the kids were wee and we were all in. Would do woodland walks etc i’m fine with the cold as can wrap up! I hate halloween and bonfire night but i love Christmas and again the whole build up when kids were wee - pantos, santa visits etc but since the kids got older i now prefer the summer months!

being in the garden, trips away, holidays etc and better weather and light nights for them when they are out but then i have hayfever, i sweat like a pig, (thanks peri) i burn & i hate wasps so it’s swings and roundabouts for me! My kids have summer birthdays too so there is that as well.

i do think the years go by too fast - this one in particular has flown in. i do prefer Autumn to full blown winter so Sept before the dark nights come round fully (hate driving in the dark) my birthday is in october which was another reason i liked the ber months when i was wee. I don’t like November & January i HATE it is the longest most depressing month. March at least you have spring and lighter mornings and nights to look forward to and by April we usually have better weather. May is a bit of a bore then June the schools start winding down (scottish school holidays) but it’s funny because i’m the opposite now of how i was 20/30 years ago! This year has actually been a really nice summer which we might pay for over the winter!

Rockfordpeach · 31/08/2025 21:22

I have SAD in the summer months, i absolutely love autumn and winter

Timeforabitofpeace · 31/08/2025 21:27

I hate the 3 months after Christmas.

rosegarden95 · 31/08/2025 21:28

I don’t mind the ber months .. it’s the Jan Feb March months I don’t like. Sorry to hear about your mum

Thejugglestruggle · 31/08/2025 21:29

I love the "ber" months, but agree that the modern phenomenon of attempting to make money from every damned thing including people's seasonal preferences is intensely irritating 😂

Whenlifegiveslemons · 31/08/2025 21:29

Oh I'm totally with you! I thrive in summer, feel alive but come winter im generally unmotivated & wishing the days away.

ItsnotnearlyChristmas · 31/08/2025 21:30

Hear you Op.

Freezing this morning ( well 10 degrees) and after being able to water the garden at 6am in nothing much that’s both sad annoying. Detest the short days more than anything.

Now I don’t count September and just focus on it being only 3 months until the sun starts coming back after Christmas.

sanityisamyth · 31/08/2025 21:32

100% with you. I despise autumn and winter

IdBeLionIfISaid · 31/08/2025 21:33

I've realised I like 6 months of the year and don't much like the others
July-Dec I love
Jan-June no ta

PickleSarnie · 31/08/2025 21:33

Im the opposite. I can't explain how happy I feel when the weather starts to turn. I love Autumn. I love jumpers, and duvets and autumnal food. Picking sloes. Making sloe gin. Drinking sloe gin. Christmas. Eating all the cheese. January and February are miserable though. Then March/April involves spring ski trip so it improves again. Summer is bearable. But definitely only my 4th favourite season.

EveryDayisFriday · 31/08/2025 21:34

I'm a spring/ summer girl but I try to embrace the autumn and winter to not fall into low mood. I use it as a mini hibernation/ cozy hunker down reset period. I tend to go to the gym more often in the darker months. I try to sit in the sun when it dares to show its face for the Vit D.

user764329056 · 31/08/2025 21:35

Am with you OP, feel we’re heading towards a dark tunnel and don’t come out for months, Jan and Feb crap but at least evenings become lighter, hate feeling of being plunged into darkness for months

mumofoneAloneandwell · 31/08/2025 21:36

No! Love them

Cattenberg · 31/08/2025 21:39

Yes, I hate autumn and winter and I wish I could hop to the southern hemisphere every September. The nights are already drawing in, awful!

PosiePerkinPootleFlump · 31/08/2025 21:41

The ber months have nothing on the uary months in terms of shitness. I don’t love late autumn but mainly because it signals the coming of that jan/feb rubbish

Sandyshandy · 31/08/2025 21:56

Sorry about your Mum.

I don’t like winter either - it’s the darkness, it’s just grim. Dropping the kids for their bus in the dark, never seeing the garden. In the summer there seems to be so much more time to do stuff morning, afternoon and evening- it’s like a whole section of life. You can be at work all day and still have 4 hours in the evening in the garden, dog walking…. + a before work walk. In the winter it’s just morning, afternoon, and night. No useful evening. I live rurally and I think it does make winter worse, although summer is better.
February I don’t mind because the days are noticeable longer and even in January there are ‘signs of spring’ and it feels like we are on the winning side again.

Wackadaywideawake · 31/08/2025 21:56

October to February can do one.

And they can take Halloween and Christmas ‘celebrations’ and shove them up their jacksy.

I do not care if this makes me sound miserable. I’m not. I just hate enforced ‘fun’, the weather, short days, defrosting my car in the dark, and being forced to buy shite. Don’t get me started on Christmas music. .

Frankenpug23 · 31/08/2025 22:02

I agree I don’t mind september but october to february are just bloody awful! loads of bugs, freezing cold, dark early - just god awful

DrCoconut · 31/08/2025 22:03

Rockabybabyboat · 31/08/2025 19:04

Did you used to work with me 🤣

I can never join in on the i hate dark nights chat, whats not to like - casseroles, candle light and hot chocolate - the best!

You can eat casserole and drink hot chocolate in summer when it's nice weather. I do if I feel like it, they are a staple of camping trips. And light some citronella candles to go with it. Much nicer than cold, dark and miserable.

DiscoNights · 31/08/2025 22:07

I hate the ber months as well. Especially December. The grey, the dark, the rain, the chaos, the pressure. I hate Christmas music so much, and Christmas in general just hijacks my life. I just can't stand it. January, despite how crap it is in other ways, is actually a huge relief for me because the autumn months are over and so is Christmas.

hellonuranus · 31/08/2025 22:10

Bumdrops · 31/08/2025 19:05

January and February ….. ugh horrid

I feel really sorry for my sons who are born end of Jan, and mid Feb. Poor buggers

Messyandconceited · 31/08/2025 22:12

I've always been an autumn/winter person but I'm dreading it this year for some reason, back to going to work in the dark, ugh 😣 And that's despite being menopausal and constantly too hot, I still don't want the long days and sunshine to go this year, in fact I feel quite depressed at the thought Sad

DrCoconut · 31/08/2025 22:13

I hate the illnesses as well. I work in education and since covid and being diagnosed with an autoimmune condition seem to have lost some of my resistance to bugs. Last winter I ended up on a warning about attendance at work as I was absolutely floored by 3 viruses in a row and they use Bradford scoring. I was so run down by Christmas, it was awful and the summer has been really good to recharge and energise again. The previous winter DS was in hospital with pneumonia. I just dread it each year. Only a couple of weeks or so of everyone well at once now.

16plusDC · 31/08/2025 22:17

I hate that so many on social media think 1st September = Christmas. It’s all I’ve seen on TikTok today.

RosieLeaLovesTea · 31/08/2025 22:18

You are not alone!!! I agree with everythingbl you said. Father in law died in June too. It’a so depressing in winter.
