Anyone else hate the “ber” months?

Chiavennasca · 31/08/2025 18:17

September 1st tomorrow. I bloody hate the “ber” months. Clocks move. Cold and dark. Halloween, bonfire night & Xmas shoved down our throats at every turn.

I hate pumpkin flavoured stuff, I hate fireworks, I hate the word “autumnal.” I don’t want to get cosy with blankets and eat soup and light candles. I want to sit outside in the sun and eat salads and wear suncream.

I’m extra bitter this year because my mum died in June. Wake me up in 2026.

This post is just a rant hahaha, anyone else? Or am I alone in my end-of-year hatred?

I'm fine until January, February. I am especially looking forward to October because I finally get a new hip, then hopefully another hip a few months later. This summer has been miserable for me because I'm too immobile to get down the steps to the garden, to sit and sun bathe. I just need to get through the next six months.

Retrogamer · 31/08/2025 22:20

No. Im not a fan either.
Its cold and dark and expensive.

I hate that so many on social media think 1st September = Christmas. It’s all I’ve seen on TikTok today.

I know! Ridiculous! Even here on MN the Christmas talk starts at the end of August. That's when I start getting promotional emails about Christmas, too (usually from companies I've never even heard of and I don't know where they get my email address from).

Comeinupto40 · 31/08/2025 22:25

I’m sorry about your mum xx

I quite like the ‘-ber’ months, although I agree the dark evenings are crap.
Better than the ‘-ary’ months, which are the pits!

Sortalike · 31/08/2025 22:25

I do love autumn and winter, I like the stillness of the evenings.

I've definitely struggled with the heat more over the last few summers, so although I used to be a hotter the better kind of woman, I am much happier to be cooler!

You can eat casserole and drink hot chocolate in summer when it's nice weather. I do if I feel like it, they are a staple of camping trips. And light some citronella candles to go with it. Much nicer than cold, dark and miserable.

I cant say ive ever had casserole or hot chocolate camping in the summer - its baked potatoes and gin in our set up lol.

Dont think anyone will ever persuade me that summer is better then winter! Summer has so many highly built expectations, winter is so much more chilled out

I missed the part where you said your Mum died, I’m really sorry ! Flowers

Me too. Im really sorry op.

Fionasapples · 31/08/2025 22:28

I love 1st September and the start of the bers. I don't like hot weather. I'm weird and I know it!

fruitbrewhaha · 31/08/2025 22:29

I’m ok with September and even the first week or so of October can be quite nice but once the clocks go back I’m pretending not to exist until March, when the clocks change again and I can spend every day saying “where’s the fucking sunshine”

I agree with this. Im always a bit relieved when summer is done. It always feels very extroverted, me me, lets get out and do everything and make every memory count. When it’s autumn there isnt any pressure.

ninjahamster · 31/08/2025 22:29

LOVE them! Feels like such a reward for surviving the summer. I hate the hot months, light mornings and evenings, hay fever, sweat, hot in bed, wasps and flies…
Autumn is awesome! Out come the fluffy blankets, the candles, hot chocolate. The excitement of Halloween, bonfire night, Xmas.

Surely there’s no more misery of a month than February? . Still cold as fuck and absolutely nothing to get excited for

Yes i like the 'ber' months, but can't stand the 'uary' ones!!

DiscoNights · 31/08/2025 22:31

Newsenmum · 31/08/2025 22:28

Me too. Im really sorry op.

Me too. Sorry, OP. I still miss my Mum all these years later.

Dreamondreaminon · 31/08/2025 22:34

I hate January, February and March much more. Fucking freezing, miserable weather and fuck all to do (at least Halloween, bonfire night and Christmas are fun distractions).

Gee63 · 31/08/2025 22:41

Sorry to hear about your mum OP.

I agree with you but I try to find the joy in the months eg I do love a hot chocolate sitting in a nice coffee shop with a new book.

And I enjoy the process of putting on more than a few pounds and not giving a shit as I’ll be in jumpers until next summer.

Gee63 · 31/08/2025 22:43

Oh you just reminded me about the massive spiders that September always brings OP!

forgottenkevin · 31/08/2025 22:44

Sorry to hear about your mum op.

Personally I love the ber months. I like an excuse to get cosy at home with the fire on. I like the colours and crisp, crunchy, sunny walks are my favourite.

However I don’t get this new trend of people making out that it’s their entire personality. The endless posts about pumpkin spiced shit and big scarves and all the rest of it. Guess that’s the world we live in now.

JustSawJohnny · 31/08/2025 22:46

They're my faves.

LOVE me a jumper and a 70 denier tight.

Maybe it just takes a shift in thinking from warm garden party to cosy, Scandi vibes?

Bring on the dark nights & hot water bottles ❤

JustSawJohnny · 31/08/2025 22:48

Sorry about your Mum, OP.

The colder months can be great for self care.

Lots of baths and good books.x.

mrlistersgelfbride · 31/08/2025 22:49

I do feel a bit sad that it’s September tomorrow.

The back to school mentality and traffic gets heavier, weather gets worse. Mornings darker and it’s harder to motivate yourself.
I work a long commute away and hate driving in the dark and rain.
Pumpkin spice is getting on my tits after all these years.
Ill be glad when Christmas is over, it’s January again and we can be quiet for a couple of months before spring starts 😊
At least we have had decent summer weather this year!

GooGooMuckMuck · 31/08/2025 22:50

So sorry to hear about your Mum ♥️
Agreed, I get depressed and constantly ill! I feel so healthy and happy during the summer months, and I love the feeling of being able to step out in flip flops and no need to wear a jacket. I wish I could live somewhere where it’s sunny 365. The autumn and winter in the U.K. is just pissy rain, grey skies, freezing cold and nowhere near as romantic as people make it out to be. Yuck!

Peanutssuck · 31/08/2025 22:53

Agree OP. Hate hate HATE the ber months. Roll on next year, when warmer days are around the corner

JifNtGif · 31/08/2025 22:54

Love the autumn and winter, have hated the humidity and heat this summer. Bring on the hot soups, winter walks and sitting at the fire side in country pubs.

Choclabratwatowner88 · 31/08/2025 22:55

I like September and October, one because I love Halloween and 2 because it’s still warm enough for me to just wear a hoody unless it’s raining as I bloody hate wearing a coat. I also love Christmas. Don’t care about bonfire night, fireworks are boring in my opinion. I do hate January and feb though because getting up at 6am when it’s minus 5 is not enjoyable. Especially when you live by the sea 🫠 I don’t hate summer, I do hate when it’s over 23 degrees because I have aversion to heat. Also it’s when the weather dog walkers appear, by this I mean the people you’ve never seen before walking thier dogs, usually not following dog walking etiquette. I do like the winter for this reason because you hardly see anyone 😂😂
