Constipation- someone PLEASE help me

HelpMeMelpHe · 14/08/2025 20:12

I have been constipated for 7 days. That may not sound like a lot but I usually go 2/3 times a day without issue. I was away on holiday and ate crap food and basically survived on crisps and pizza as I was so hot I had no appetite.

I am currently lying on the bed in tears, I have tried:
orange juice
4 suppositories
3 x enemas
putting my feet up
relaxing
black coffee
a special vitamin tablet which DP says always makes him go
Drinking loads of water
pushing from inside my vagina
actually trying to manually remove the stool (sorry for the way TMI)
sitting in a warm bath
massaging my stomach
dulcolex

ill be ringing my GP first thing in the morning but can ANYONE suggest anything else. I’m in a total panic, I can just feel the rock hard stool, I’m in agony, shaking and it hurts to walk. To top it off I’m on my period which I hoped would get things going but nothing. Someone please help I am desperate and I’m worried my gp will just prescribe everything I’ve already tried. I’m a nurse and working all weekend and at this point I can’t see how I can go into work which would leave my team in the absolute shit (pardon the pun). I don’t know what to do 🫨🫨

While you're waiting for your mum look up LI4 and St36 acupuncture points and massage each with some pressure for a couple of minutes. Focus on slow, calming breaths.

Christmasbear1 · 14/08/2025 22:06

Lots of fizzy drinks/coke make me go

Sainsburys pharmacy aisle and if they haven’t got it on the shelves ask the pharmacist - Califig. California syrup of figs. In a little bottle. Stir about a tablespoon full into a small glass of orange juice and drink down. Then don’t move too far from the bathroom. I guarantee this will work. But if you’re this constipated it will probably give you the gripes - worth it for the relief though.

Sympathy from me. I had to do some manual extraction. I also got off the toilet and squatted over newspaper, at that stage I'd have pooed anywhere to get it out. Or try running a tepid bath and poo in that...not ideal but helps with the pain.
I vaguely recall years ago someone on here recommending a hula hooping type movement to get the bowels moving, and you can do it led down if necessary.

menopausalmare · 14/08/2025 22:08

Drink a bottle of Pinot grigio- that'll loosen things up👍

YouSaidWhaaat · 14/08/2025 22:08

Double dose of Dulcolax worked for me but boy oh boy did it make me fell ill! Desperate measures but never again.

Hope you manage to shift it soon OP.

AntiHop · 14/08/2025 22:09

When the poo is finally ready to come out, use an upturned washing up bowl to raise your feet, lift your arms as you push, and blow like you're blowing a balloon.

Definitely call in sick tomorrow. Poor you.

BengalBangle · 14/08/2025 22:09

Buy Senokat Max Strength and take 8 tablets in one go.

GAJLY · 14/08/2025 22:09

Movicol or laxido will work. I'd put 4 sachets into one drink of squash every day until it's worked. You can buy it over the counter at the chemist or even get it delivered from Amazon. It completely breaks it down and stimulates the bowel. Sounds like the enemas/suppositories aren't working because it's too hard and large making it impacted. I've lived with a bowel issue, and these work the best.

Bateson · 14/08/2025 22:10

Is LunaDeBallona HelpMeHelpMe posting under another name? Can’t believe people are falling for for this. No way would a trained Community Nurse be needing to seek advice regarding constipation on Mumsnet.

Islandlover · 14/08/2025 22:10

Movicol or Laxido. Both the same. Take six sachets for compaction in a litre of water. As per the instructions on the leaflet. It’s quite gentle, takes a good 24 hours but you do get warnings!

WindTheBobbinAgain · 14/08/2025 22:10

I work in the NHS- call in sick tomorrow, and see your GP and let them decide if you need to go to ED. We have all done manual disimpaction…

LancashireButterPie · 14/08/2025 22:12

HelpMeMelpHe · 14/08/2025 21:12

Thanks for the sympathy everyone. If I rung in sick it would truly cause holy hell, I’m the only nurse on (there should be 5) for the whole weekend so already unsafe and if I rung in sick… but not sure what else I can do, I can’t even straighten up properly 😭

Kindly but you are being ridiculous now.
I also work in a community team, tell them now and they'll still have time to get someone to cover.
Your own health comes first.
If you can stand up l, how on earth can you work.
I admire your committment but come on.

Namechange2700000 · 14/08/2025 22:13

Tomatoes drizzled with olive oil.

TheSaltedCaramelPath · 14/08/2025 22:13

Having tried all of the suggestions above and still struggled, my go-to now is to drink 2 tbsp of olive oil - which seems effective in actually coating the bowel lining so the hard bullet can finally pass.

Waitinggame42023 · 14/08/2025 22:14

Oh OP I feel for you, I suffered from terrible constipation when I was pregnant. For me, prune juice first thing in the morning, before any food, no food for a couple of hours afterwards (lots of ice/ very chilled makes it more palatable) . Once you've finished the glass, down loads of water.
Sometimes it takes a couple of hours. Then, a glycerol suppository about 20 mins before will help clear the difficult 'backlog' (sorry!) first bit. I found them really helpful but VERY difficult to get, I was going to Boots branches all over the place trying to get hold of some- in the end ordered some from an online pharmacy site.

healthybychristmas · 14/08/2025 22:14

The thing is that you are the last one to be absent tomorrow but all five of you are absent so there's no reason why you should get the blame.

I had this problem on Mounjaro. I've never known anything like it. The only thing that worked was the stool softeners.

tierdytierd · 14/08/2025 22:14

Yes…. Boil the kettle and soak a good portion of dates, drink the warm date water, all if you can.
when I was a smoker & ciggy & a coffee that was an emergency dash to the throne
date water will work effectively , (randomly syrup of figs wasn’t as effective though)

are you drinking plenty of water & moving around as much as you can (as uncomfortable as it is)

good luck, it’s horrid, hope you get some relief pronto x

Stravaig · 14/08/2025 22:15

Plain natural yoghurt with lots of live cultures?
Bowl of canned prunes?

ThisPlumCrab · 14/08/2025 22:15

Try Magnesium Citrate. It works by drawing water into the intestines. The increased water content softens the stool, making it easier to pass and promoting bowel movements. It typically takes effect within 30 minutes to 6 hours.

Seasonofthesticks · 14/08/2025 22:16

I take two psyllium husk a day to keep me regular as mounjaro constipates me but I’m not sure they would work on an impacted stool

Thelosthalfathought · 14/08/2025 22:16

Give up on the toilet, squat over whatever you use as your sick bowl, i have an old washing up bowl, line with loo roll. Once I in that state only old school squatting give me a chance in moving it.

Try a warm shower, powerful as you can and move around your bowel in the same direction as your bowel flows. I find 10 minutes is normally enough to wake it up. Then squat over toilet tissue receptacle, I often play cards or do something to distract me. Let gravity work in your favour. Once you feel the urge to push, then push but not before. Then I hold my breath and use my diaphragm to push down.

The only thing constipation has helped me with is I can birth a baby with 3 pushes.

TimeForATerf · 14/08/2025 22:16

Movicol or laxido, one sachet every hour for six hours, then the same the next day. It takes a couple of days but it really DOES work. You will then be on the loo for two days, but better out than in.

I am a seasoned Laxido user.

Chickenbone123 · 14/08/2025 22:16

Smoke a cigarette

GoldPoster · 14/08/2025 22:17

I was in hospital after an operation and taking Codine. I had a bad experience after my previous operation so before I went in I ordered a box of Laxido. When I came out I followed the impaction regime 8 sachets within a 6 hour period. Worked really well.
