Constipation- someone PLEASE help me

HelpMeMelpHe · 14/08/2025 20:12

I have been constipated for 7 days. That may not sound like a lot but I usually go 2/3 times a day without issue. I was away on holiday and ate crap food and basically survived on crisps and pizza as I was so hot I had no appetite.

I am currently lying on the bed in tears, I have tried:
orange juice
4 suppositories
3 x enemas
putting my feet up
relaxing
black coffee
a special vitamin tablet which DP says always makes him go
Drinking loads of water
pushing from inside my vagina
actually trying to manually remove the stool (sorry for the way TMI)
sitting in a warm bath
massaging my stomach
dulcolex

ill be ringing my GP first thing in the morning but can ANYONE suggest anything else. I’m in a total panic, I can just feel the rock hard stool, I’m in agony, shaking and it hurts to walk. To top it off I’m on my period which I hoped would get things going but nothing. Someone please help I am desperate and I’m worried my gp will just prescribe everything I’ve already tried. I’m a nurse and working all weekend and at this point I can’t see how I can go into work which would leave my team in the absolute shit (pardon the pun). I don’t know what to do 🫨🫨

I’ve just had a sudden realisation that people used to be accused of being poo trolls. I promise I’m not one of those, I’ve been in mumsnet since I was pregnant 13 years ago but name change all the time (and especially for threads where I’m talking about poo!). Thanks again everyone, 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻 for me

I read somewhere that warm prune juice with melted butter works a treat. Sounds disgusting though!

I think that sounds quite nice, would pour it on ice cream.

foxinasnowstorm · 14/08/2025 21:46

I had to go to a & e as I couldn’t urinate in the end. Please go and get help-I had to go on a drip and have help to move the bowling ball type fecal matter. I’ve got a rectocele grade 2-3 now…as it happened so many times…so don’t wait

Old school but arachis oil enema first , lie on bed and raise your legs to allow it to get into all the corners and crevices, then a phosphate enema, again keep lower body elevated to allow it to work its way down the bowel, wait as long as you can and then gooooooooooooo ! You will lose half a stone in approx 5 minutes !
Not great if you have a nut allergy !

millmoo · 14/08/2025 21:47

Right this is gross but this is what I had to do.
same thing happened to me and I was in agony and I was also really scared that I was going to die from an infected bowel or something 🙈
i sat on the toilet and I got cotton buds and I made them wet and then I put them in my bottom and kind of pulled bits of the stuck poo out, I kept going until I got most of it out and once I had the main part of the blockage out I was then able to go and felt so much more comfortable.
obviously it was gross doing it but I didn’t have any other choice and I don’t think any medical professional would ever recommend this but it worked 🙈

Peaceisenough · 14/08/2025 21:48

Good luck! And safe passage.

snackatack · 14/08/2025 21:49

i was told to make my hands into two fists and rub them together in a circular motion - i have no idea why scientifically it helps but it really does..

It moves things through! Good luck

CatKings · 14/08/2025 21:49

I just came to say that you should ask if anyone has laxido they can give you. It’s quite commonly used.
good luck.
normally I’d say 2 first day, 4 the next, then 8 (it’s what we were recommended for DD) but you seem more desperate time wise.

Ooh, interesting, would that be some type of reflexology going on there?

WhyCantISayFork · 14/08/2025 21:50

Magnesium sulphate (Epsom salts), encourages water into the stools.

Edited to add: google using Epsom salts for constipation for the dosage

MikeRafone · 14/08/2025 21:51

Prune juice from Asda, a carton of it

we tried all the prescription stuff

but prune juice was the best to get it moving

ticktickticktickBOOM · 14/08/2025 21:51

Drink the juice from a tin of prunes, eat the prunes, wait 1 hour then smoke a fag.

IsItFinallyMe · 14/08/2025 21:51

James prune juice, shot it before bed and then first thing in the morning, nothing else has ever worked for me. Ps don’t use supermarket own brand it’s rubbish and also has to be juice.

Aussiegold · 14/08/2025 21:53

I don't know how well they work, but there A LOT of reels on Instagram on this with various massage techniques.
I would call 111 now as DH ended up in A&E with his constipation.

BoudiccaRuled · 14/08/2025 21:54

Go for a really long walk or run?

YesHonestly · 14/08/2025 21:55

I honestly would (and have!) get set up on the toilet for as long as it takes.

Feet propped up so that your knees are higher than your hips? And breathe deeply, exhaling down into your stomach if that makes sense? Don’t push, just breathe and let gravity work.

If you still have no luck you really do need to give 111 a call.

MrsSkylerWhite · 14/08/2025 21:56

Tricky if you’re in pain.

This works for me. Also kiwi fruit with the skins on (as a last resort, when even the pico hasn’t worked alongside the hot buttered prunes.) It is disgusting but works fairly quickly.
however if the blockage is in the rectum then really you need to keep going with the suppositories too.

Bateson · 14/08/2025 21:57

Not sure why you’re worried about working the weekend; it’s not Friday yet.

Twiglets1 · 14/08/2025 21:57

Prioritise your own health and don't go into work tomorrow if this doesn't resolve itself overnight. Get a taxi to a pharmacist if you have to in the morning, just get to one, get the strongest laxative the pharmacist advises and stay at home until it works.

Put yourself first and get this sorted asap.

EveSix · 14/08/2025 21:58

Oh you poor thing.
Have another go at manual extraction. I had to do it following two episiotomies -you need to extract just a tiny bit and go back in for more, repeating until the blockage begins to gain a bit of wriggle-room. I used one of those bulby things you squeeze water into to extract ear-wax to get some water into my rectum, lubricated my finger and then calmly set about excavating.

Once it's out, you're going to need to keep things moving and very, very soft. Lots of pulses, dried fruit, roughage and plenty of liquid. The bowel will have lost a bit of its 'bounce' so you must make sure it doesn't get bunged up again.

Good luck!

LunaDeBallona · 14/08/2025 22:00

Ok, only read this if you have to.
You are going to have to leave your dignity at the door and get your husbands help.
.You will need - Towels, preferably old. Pillow. Mobile phone . Gloves (plastic, not woolly). Vaseline ( the clear stuff, not the lip one), if you haven’t got that then some lube?
And A tea spoon.

Get on your bed with a few towels . On your back, pull your knees up and DH to put pillow under your bum ( you can put it under the towels under bum).
Ypu hang onto your knees pulling them onto your chest.
DH needs to glove (and man) up.
Position phone with torch on so he’s got good light.
Fingers in Vaseline, then gently ‘open’ your anus.
He needs to use his finger to ‘hook out’ what he can.
If it’s very big/compacted/ and rock hard he may need to use the teaspoon to help break it up to hook it out. When he’s got some out get on the loo and get pushing - remember to get some boxes/books to put your feet on so you ge5 a good angle on your bowel. If no movement in 15 mins your brave DH needs to go back in. Tell him to pretend he’s mining for gold.

Otherwise, wait till the morning and take 8 sachets of laxido.
It sounds like a fecal impaction though and only getting the impacted poo out will let the rest of the backed up stuff move out.
No matter how much stool softener/figs etc you take you cannot soften the impacted poo so manual extraction is ,I’m afraid, the only way to solve this.

ResultsMayVary · 14/08/2025 22:01

Lying in a bath may also help

labradormam · 14/08/2025 22:02

Manual movement, OP. Bending and stretching and twisting to get things moving.

Good luck.

OneTwoThreeSneeze · 14/08/2025 22:03

When my baby was constipated I fed him Ella's kitchen Prune pouches (over 5 years ago now) and they worked. But it does sound like you need a doctor.
