Constipation- someone PLEASE help me

HelpMeMelpHe · 14/08/2025 20:12

I have been constipated for 7 days. That may not sound like a lot but I usually go 2/3 times a day without issue. I was away on holiday and ate crap food and basically survived on crisps and pizza as I was so hot I had no appetite.

I am currently lying on the bed in tears, I have tried:
orange juice
4 suppositories
3 x enemas
putting my feet up
relaxing
black coffee
a special vitamin tablet which DP says always makes him go
Drinking loads of water
pushing from inside my vagina
actually trying to manually remove the stool (sorry for the way TMI)
sitting in a warm bath
massaging my stomach
dulcolex

ill be ringing my GP first thing in the morning but can ANYONE suggest anything else. I’m in a total panic, I can just feel the rock hard stool, I’m in agony, shaking and it hurts to walk. To top it off I’m on my period which I hoped would get things going but nothing. Someone please help I am desperate and I’m worried my gp will just prescribe everything I’ve already tried. I’m a nurse and working all weekend and at this point I can’t see how I can go into work which would leave my team in the absolute shit (pardon the pun). I don’t know what to do 🫨🫨

Have you tried dulcolax suppositories ? Something similar happened to me on holiday recently (I didn't go for 6 days), and this was all that worked, after herbal remedies/Senna other suppositories, dulcolax etc.
If not, I would echo calling 111 in case you have an impacted bowel.

CatCaretaker · 14/08/2025 21:36

I was like this after giving birth in December. It's horrific, but one tip that might help - as I don't think anyone else has said it yet - raise your feet when on the toilet. Put your feet up on a stool or something so you're in more of a crouched position.

you need to drink a bottle of sparkling water and smoke a cigarette

I would have said a couple of cups of coffee and cigarettes too! Always worked for me.

Spoonful of olive oil. Always work my portugeese MIL taught me that

luckylavender · 14/08/2025 21:37

i suffered for years and two things always work for me. Skimmed milk and lying on my side massaging my stomach. None of the other things have ever worked.

Dymaxion · 14/08/2025 21:38

I think this might the time to bring out the big guns, do you know anyone at the out of hours GP who would take pity on you and prescribe you a Fleet enema ? And are you close enough to any of your colleagues to get them to administer it Grin

menopausalfart · 14/08/2025 21:39

I've suffered all my life. I have IBD but instead of diarrhea, I get constipation. I know you've tried Dulcolax but they only work for me if I take two before bed. By mid-day, I clear out.

Peaceisenough · 14/08/2025 21:40

Have you tried the squatty potty thing on the toilet? If you haven’t got a stool (ahem, sorry), you can put your feet on some books.

Mistyglade · 14/08/2025 21:40

If you’ve really done all of the above and it’s still not shifting I’d get to A&E mate, would your colleagues rather you keeled over?

If not, get off the internet because this doesn’t make chinny reckon sense.

There is one but she is currently in Ibiza or I’d be straight on the phone to her 🤣

You have to call in sick. Lack of staff is not your problem. Have you tried a hot water bottle?

But not too close, afterwards!

menopausalfart · 14/08/2025 21:40

Just to add, if I take Dulcolax at any time during the day, they don't work.

Dymaxion · 14/08/2025 21:41

Echo the poo stool and also leaning slightly to the left when in position.

Mistyglade · 14/08/2025 21:41

I feel constipated reading it.

I feel constipated reading it.

It’s bringing back some very painful memories.

laesosalt · 14/08/2025 21:42

This will sound crazy but I was severely constipated after having baby three and my husband kept telling me to vision pushing out a big poo with my feet on a stool. I sat and laughed whilst crying thinking how silly but my goodness it worked. I was very close to going to hospital for help because the pain and fear was a lot! Just sit, focus on your breathing and stay calm. Thinking of you as it truly is awful 😒

JacknDiane · 14/08/2025 21:42

Prunes work

MrsSkylerWhite · 14/08/2025 21:43

Dulcolax. Youngest had similar years ago. In pain and ruining his trip. Sorted him out in a couple of hours. Were advised by pharmacist then that liquid is fastest.

MaleficentQueen · 14/08/2025 21:43

Lactulose worked like a dream for me, after my c-section. It felt like I was blocked solid, with a literal rock, and was in agony. However, the lactulose soon shifted it! It was uncomfortable, not gonna lie, but it did the job. Oh, and plenty of water.

BooneyBeautiful · 14/08/2025 21:43

user1476613140 · 14/08/2025 20:46

But lactulose always works for me.

Or Movicol. That's good too.

HelpMeMelpHe · 14/08/2025 21:44

Thank you everyone. I’ve called my mum and she is bringing some Laxido sachets to me in the next hour. I will call my gp in the morning or if anything gets worse overnight, 111.

The pain has slightly eased and the pressure has eased, you’re right, being short staffed is not my problem and if god forbid I got hit by a bus in the morning, the visits would still be allocated and the patients seen.

I am going to get off of the internet now and wait for my mum to arrive. Thanks again everyone for all of your tips and advice, I’ll post when hopefully there’s been some movement!

Tinned prunes or pears in fruit juice. Eat the whole tin and don’t go out unless you’re near a toilet.

LaBelleSauvage123 · 14/08/2025 21:44

I read somewhere that warm prune juice with melted butter works a treat. Sounds disgusting though!

letstalkaboutjam · 14/08/2025 21:45

OP I think we're all united in sympathy for you!! Just wanted to add this sounds like fecal impaction now, and likely needs medical intervention.

Also once you do begin passing stools again, everything has probably been stretched out making constipation more likely in future. Keep on top of laxatives, water and high fiber foods for a few weeks until it returns to normal.

If you have any Epsom salts, I would hop in the bath again, as hot as is comfortable. Massage down your lower back & if the stool is close to the exit, massage your perineum from back to front also. If you're doing tummy massage, make sure you're pressing towards the intestine so you're guiding stool down. If you have lactulose, or stool softening laxatives, keep taking liberally.

If I were you though, I'd be seeking a doctor ASAP.
