Anyone around... scared

I'm home alone with my 12 year old twins as my husband is working away and not due back until tomorrow evening. He's about 6 hours away.

Over the last few days I've had a painful boil under my boob. I saw the GP today as it doubled in size overnight. There is a red circle around it. She prescribed doxycycline (2 a day) and said to phone back if it gets worse.

I've been getting more and more unwell. My left arm has started tingling, I'm sweating with cold hands and feet, the pain is indescribable and I'm exhausted. I slept for 6 hours this afternoon and I'm still utterly exhausted and all my joints hurt.

I've had to phone my father in law who is an hour away to come through to sit with the twins. I'm on hold to 111 but a 45 minute wait to call answer as a minimum they said.

I'm not sure whether just to call a taxi when FIL gets here to go straight to accident and emergency.

I'm a little freaked out at how unwell I feel.

It sounds like sepsis. I had it - and it comes on terrifyingly fast. I was collapsed within about two hours of first feeling unwell. Dont wait at all.

Byjimminy · 07/08/2025 23:12

Taking your dc in a taxi and getting Fil to meet you at a&e to bring them back sounds like a good solution if possible?

Victoriouslyvictorious · 07/08/2025 23:15

Yes taxi to A & E. Let us know how you get on.

Hope you get seen asap and are on the road to recovery soon Flowers

Mathsdebator · 07/08/2025 23:18

When you book in at A&E and they ask what the problem is say 'I believe i have sepsis, I'm on my own'

Then sit right where nurses come to call patients through so if you fall very unwell whilst waiting someone will notice

Gabbycat245 · 07/08/2025 23:19

That sounds scary OP. Definitely an A&E job. Get well soon

DarkSuitsSadSongs · 07/08/2025 23:20

The nurse has said I need to be reviewed by an out of hours doctor so they will call me back at some point tonight.

Good luck OP. Kids will be fine at home til FIL arrives. Keep us updated. Thinking of you

DarkSuitsSadSongs · 07/08/2025 23:20

And FIL has just arrived

Get your kids to quickly pack a bag with charger, some cash, pajamas, book, etc while you phone a taxi and GET TO A&E ASAP.

Can I just say ( not to OP, to everyone else) isn’t it an appalling situation that the OP is being told not to ring 999 but ring a taxi.
The NHS costs us a fortune and isnt fit for service.

Keeping you in my thoughts OP but the sooner you get to A&E, the better.

EDIT - just seen your post. Don’t wait for a phone call. Go now. I never advocate for going to A&E - but this is an emergency.

No no no, go to A&E now. Don't wait.

PickledMuffin · 07/08/2025 23:23

Good luck OP. x

LuLuRN · 07/08/2025 23:23

This is def a get to A&E quickly situation. Mention you have an infection & are worried about Sepsis.
Take care.

Francestein · 07/08/2025 23:23

Glad you have some help. Hopefully you’ll soon have some AB’s on board to help with this. Sounds very painful.

uncomfortablydumb60 · 07/08/2025 23:24

I don’t think you should wait for a call back
hours count with sepsis
Get FiL to take you now and when you book mention Sepsis
Good luck OP

murasaki · 07/08/2025 23:24

I'd go to a&e now FiL is here. Good luck.

CherryogDog · 07/08/2025 23:25

With the red ring around it, is there any chance it could be a tick bite?

TheBeesTrees · 07/08/2025 23:25

Could FIL drive you to A&E, then take the twins back to bed. Make sure you have money for a taxi home and a door key just in case.

Byjimminy · 07/08/2025 23:26

Yeah I'd go to a&e in a taxi @DarkSuitsSadSongs as your FIL is here. I'm quite surprised they haven't told you to do that.

Idontknowhatnametochoose · 07/08/2025 23:27

The doctor will most likely tell you to go to a+e anyway.

Go now- hours count with sepsis. Don't risk your life.

CurlyZoo · 07/08/2025 23:27

Get yourself off to A&E tonight for sure, you probably need more intense treatment that is all. My brother had a boil a few months ago that he left for a while and needed a big jolt of antibiotics to feel better. The hospital is the best place for you, as they can give you IV antibiotics if needed.

I have had very bad infections a few times, as I was immune compromised once for several months and you do feel very poorly indeed when an infection ramps up - I have been vomiting, dizzy, cold sweats - and they fixed me up right as rain so do try not to worry. But don't leave it, go tonight!

I strongly recommend you don't wait for the doctor to call you. Go to A&E now. Sepsis is not something that waits for doctors to call you back. Hopefully it isn't sepsis. But if it is you want to be in hospital before you start getting worse.

Grab some things and go

mamaison · 07/08/2025 23:27

You need to be seen. Don’t wait for a call. Take your phone charger and some things and go.

Mumdiva99 · 07/08/2025 23:27

Good luck. I'm not usually a good to a&e person. But sounds like you may need to. You could wait hours t home for a doctor to call you back to then say you need to be seen. At least nine hospital you are in the right place.

SkaneTos · 07/08/2025 23:28

Good to hear that your FIL has arrived.
