Anyone around... scared

I'm home alone with my 12 year old twins as my husband is working away and not due back until tomorrow evening. He's about 6 hours away.

Over the last few days I've had a painful boil under my boob. I saw the GP today as it doubled in size overnight. There is a red circle around it. She prescribed doxycycline (2 a day) and said to phone back if it gets worse.

I've been getting more and more unwell. My left arm has started tingling, I'm sweating with cold hands and feet, the pain is indescribable and I'm exhausted. I slept for 6 hours this afternoon and I'm still utterly exhausted and all my joints hurt.

I've had to phone my father in law who is an hour away to come through to sit with the twins. I'm on hold to 111 but a 45 minute wait to call answer as a minimum they said.

I'm not sure whether just to call a taxi when FIL gets here to go straight to accident and emergency.

I'm a little freaked out at how unwell I feel.

So sorry to read your updates! I’ll be thinking of you today and the coming days. Sending you lots of strength, really hope things will improve soon. (What a lovely family you have btw, we read so many sad and horrible family stories on mumsnet, and to read about yours is actually heart warming!)

Anewuser · 13/08/2025 09:37

I’ve been a lurker since your initial post.

This thread has shown how great support can be when needed and you’ve followed all the advice and seemed to be on the mend.

I was so pleased on your update home after your family had shown how much they love you, (especially after your husband’s initial lukewarm response).

However, your treatment yesterday really doesn’t sound right. As others have said, I think today you need to contact the medical team. Possibly your doctor yesterday was an F1 because that doesn’t appear the first line cleaning choice.

The last thing you need is the healthy skin around your wound being compromised.

Please seek further medical advice. Unless of course you’ve woken up today and feel amazingly better.

anyolddinosaur · 13/08/2025 09:43

Are you sure you saw a doctor? There have been some pretty bad experiences with PAs (physician associates) who dont always introduce themselves. They are not doctors. Or you may have got a very junior doctor who needs to learn he made some terrible mistakes. Complain.

Sorry I should have said. The Dr at the hospital was a consultant breast surgeon.

The burning has mostly gone now and it's the usual stinging (like when you graze your knee). I phoned the surgery this morning and they booked me a home visit for dressing care by the district nursing team this afternoon.

About an hour later one of the GPs called me back and said given what happened yesterday she wants to see me and asked if I could make it up to the surgery or did she need to come to me. As much as the thought of getting dressed and sitting in the car pains me I'd rather go ro them. The twins are home and I'd be really upset if they heard me wincing in pain etc (in particular DD worries about me). So I'm going up at 11.00. She promised to be very gentle but she would be happier if she could see it herself.

Hope it goes well at the GP @DarkSuitsSadSongs .

3luckystars · 13/08/2025 10:09

My GP is brilliant too. They are worth their weight in gold.

rainbowruthie · 13/08/2025 10:15

Good luck today, hope that she is gentle

Thelosthalfathought · 13/08/2025 10:38

Good luck hope today is as painless as possible.

LuckyBluePhoton · 13/08/2025 10:38

LabubuMyArse you seem to have a medium Labubu In Your Anatomy

Haggisfish3 · 13/08/2025 12:27

Good god op. You have really been through the wringer. I hope your gp was lovely and suitably sympathetic. I agree with giving feedback about how you could have been spoken to. I think consultants etc see this so often they forget to fully explain themselves at times.

I really hope gp was helpful.

DarkSuitsSadSongs · 13/08/2025 13:11

GP was lovely. She asked if I wanted to have her examine it and redress first or of I wanted to have a chat before hand. I opted to just have it looked at straight away. She explained what she was doing before she did it even down to im just putting this saline over the dressing to loosen the adhesive OK? Then I'm just going to gently pull the edges of the dressing etc.

She said it looks better. It's red but not overly red and more importantly its not hot. She agreed the hole is small but it is leaking so positive signs. She has extended my antibiotics for another 7 days to and switched the doxycycline with something else as they constantly make me feel so sick.

She asked how I was doing generally. I said I had sent feedback to the hospital this morning and she said "good. It needs highlighting". Flushing with betadine is a very old school technique that's not really used any longer and studied have shown that it doesn't provide much better outcomes than regular cleaning with saline etc.

I'm back on Friday with the nurse for cleaning (and notes have been added to ensure that every step is explained to me) and if the GP is around she will pop in and see how I'm doing.

She also gave me a fit note for work for the rest of this week.

Wow you've got a good doctor! I'm so pleased that things are improving (albeit slowly) and that you're now getting excellent care. 🎉

Anewuser · 13/08/2025 13:40

Your GP sounds great, although you’d hope that all doctors could be like that - compassionate and able to explain everything as they do it.

I hope you continue to get better soon.

DBSFstupid · 13/08/2025 13:46

Poor you OP - this has been so awful for you💐

Inyournewdress · 13/08/2025 14:16

It is so hard for you, but does sound like things are heading in the right direction compared to where you were at the start of this thread. You might need a new one soon.

Bless your DD. My DM had to have breast biopsy done when I was young and apparently I was freaked out by skipping along to chat to her while she had a bath only to find the door locked because she didn’t want me to see and be upset. I’m sure you have done a great job helping her feel secure.

anyolddinosaur · 13/08/2025 15:10

Well a consultant really needs to have a complaint against them!

Oceangrey · 13/08/2025 16:49

Well done to your GP.

PearlsPearl · 13/08/2025 16:56

So glad the GP experience was a positive one

taxidriver · 13/08/2025 18:14

i am relieved for you that the GP experience was so positive op.

Lostfidgetcube · 13/08/2025 18:20

Wow what a lovely GP! Fingers crossed it's all better from this point on

TheChippendenSpook · 14/08/2025 03:33

What you're going through sounds awful!

I had an abcess under my armpit back in 2014tjat had to be removed under general anaesthetic. The bike was big enough to be packed and I had to have it cleaned every day or so.

I'm wondering if they used betadine to clean it because the burning pain was the worst pain I've ever felt. It was excruciating so you have my utmost sympathy for going through it. The nurses even said she'd seen men crying from the pain of it.

I hope you feel better soon.

montelbano · 14/08/2025 17:09

Pudmyboy · 12/08/2025 15:28

I had a practice nurse put iodine on open, weeping leg cellulitis: my god the pain !!! I had to keep irrigating it with saline to get rid of it and then the pain subsided.
Honestly I do wonder if my nurse and your doctor had ever attended teaching on wound care. There used to be wound care nurse specialists who could recommend the best treatment and dressings but I suspect that role probably doesn't exist any more.
Certainly putting something known to be irritating/caustic on an open wound (with exposed nerve fibres) is bound to hurt.
I am glad all your previous care was so good and hopefully your future care is up to that standard.
Sending best wishes for a speedy recovery 💐

My local surgery has three wound care specialist nurses. They were absolutely brilliant when I suddenly developed lymphodema with a number of open sores. The dressings had to be done and it was extremely painful but they went as slowly and gently as possible. The first two weeks were a nightmare but they were absolutely determined to get those running sores healed. Could not have received better and more caring treatment

DuchessDandelion · 14/08/2025 19:57

What a lovely gp :) please send some positive feedback to her surgery - doctors like her restore trust when it's been bruised.

I'm glad it's less painful today, hope you recover quickly now
