Anyone around... scared

I'm home alone with my 12 year old twins as my husband is working away and not due back until tomorrow evening. He's about 6 hours away.

Over the last few days I've had a painful boil under my boob. I saw the GP today as it doubled in size overnight. There is a red circle around it. She prescribed doxycycline (2 a day) and said to phone back if it gets worse.

I've been getting more and more unwell. My left arm has started tingling, I'm sweating with cold hands and feet, the pain is indescribable and I'm exhausted. I slept for 6 hours this afternoon and I'm still utterly exhausted and all my joints hurt.

I've had to phone my father in law who is an hour away to come through to sit with the twins. I'm on hold to 111 but a 45 minute wait to call answer as a minimum they said.

I'm not sure whether just to call a taxi when FIL gets here to go straight to accident and emergency.

I'm a little freaked out at how unwell I feel.

You need to go straight to A&E and not wait for a call back. I’d get your FiL to load you and the kids up and escort you in.

Lindy2 · 07/08/2025 23:28

I think I'd be heading to A&E. You have no idea when out of hours will call.

If your children are OK at home together, get your FIL to drive you.

If they can't be left get a taxi and leave FIL with the kids.

If it's sepsis it can get very nasty very quickly.

Dearover · 07/08/2025 23:29

We waited 47 hours for an ambulance to arrive last year. DH had a DVT and nearly lost his leg after the wait.

You're doing the right thing anyway. It's good to get advice when you're not feeling well. One step at a time

Byjimminy · 07/08/2025 23:29

As an aside, it's lovely that your FIL got to you so quickly.

Mathsdebator · 07/08/2025 23:30

When you book in at A&E and they ask what the problem is say 'I believe i have sepsis, I'm on my own'

Then sit right where nurses come to call patients through so if you fall very unwell whilst waiting someone will notice

TootSweeties · 07/08/2025 23:31

I had very similar symptoms to you. Mastitis got out of hand and my body couldn’t fight the infection. Ended up with an insane fever and rigors. Thankfully my mum is a nurse so bundled me into the car and into A&E. I was in for two nights on IV then a 10 day course of more effective antibiotics. According to my notes they were treating sepsis but nobody said at the time. Hope you can be seen quickly 💛

Thelosthalfathought · 07/08/2025 23:34

Please follow the advice given and wishing you a speedy recovery. This is the thing thats scares me about my husband working away so understand your reluctance to go.

multisurf · 07/08/2025 23:34

My instinct would be to go to A and E and not wait for the callback. Is there a friend or relative who could go with you? Go alone if you have to.

Good luck OP.

Pieceofpurplesky · 07/08/2025 23:37

i hope you are on your way to a and e

Spendysis · 07/08/2025 23:37

Go to A & E don’t wait for a doctor to call it could be a reaction to the meds or sepsis. I had a cyst / boil took antibiotics it didn’t clear up so went to the drs who sent me straight to hospital as they were concerned it was sepsis had it removed under a general and iv antibiotics

idontknowhowtodreamyourdreams · 07/08/2025 23:37

Don't wait for the call back, get in a taxi and go to a & e immediately. The Dr could be hours and will probably advise you to go anyway. With the symptoms you describe, I would go immediately.

Get to well soon. Flowers

Laurawharton3 · 07/08/2025 23:41

I get these often and I’m always told if I get cold sweats start feeling flu like symptoms, temperature ect to go get seen straight away as it’s sign of infection and if you are already on tablets I would go to a and e. Although they did give me antibiotics once and it knocked me sideways but I had known it was the antibiotics so I didn’t have to worry and just stopped taking them I got better within about 6 hours after the first dose. If you think it’s not the meds I’d go to a and e don’t risk it

AutumnLover1989 · 07/08/2025 23:42

Hope you're getting seen. Best to be safe than sorry.

DarkSuitsSadSongs · 07/08/2025 23:20

The nurse has said I need to be reviewed by an out of hours doctor so they will call me back at some point tonight.

Given your symptoms I would head to A&E now. Better to be safe than sorry & if your condition gets worse you’re close to treatment. Call backs from 111 can cause significant delay in accessing treatment. Hope you’re soon feeling better soon.

Nerdynerdynerd · 07/08/2025 23:42

Get them to check your CRP levels in case of sepsis. This is how I felt, actuslly didn't even feel that bad and crp was over 400. Didn't have a fever either, lower than normal temp but knew something was off.

Are you weeing?

Travelfairy · 07/08/2025 23:42

You poor pet OP, A&E immediately. Don't wait for a doc to call. Wasting valuable time and thats all he/she is going to tell you anyway. Feel better soon x

DarkSuitsSadSongs · 07/08/2025 23:43

I'm just waiting on a taxi. I've started vomiting now and can't stop shaking.

Now that I know the twins are going to be looked after I feel a bit calmer.

HandleThiss · 07/08/2025 23:45

I agree with everyone above. Please go now OP. The doctor will only tell you the same when they speak to you in a few hours, and in that time, things could worsen significantly. There is no benefit to you of holding off and waiting for the doctor to call, but you could greatly benefit by being seen sooner. Hope you’re okay! ❤️

RuddyLongCovid · 07/08/2025 23:45

Absolutely head to A&E. 111 can take several hours to call back. Try to grab some clean underwear, change of top, ear plugs, snacks and books, for the wait and in case you get admitted. Sending lots of hugs xx

ColumboOnTheCase · 07/08/2025 23:46

I am glad to hear you are going to A&E. I hope you're feeling better soon.

ExitPursuedByABare · 07/08/2025 23:47

God speed

CJFJ1 · 07/08/2025 23:47

Hope you get to A&E safely, OP. Absolutely agree it's the right course of action - I hope you get seen and feel better soon.

You're doing the right thing OP.

I know it's been said 100 times on here but please do make sure you say 'I think I have sepsis' as soon as you get there. If there is a long queue, please go to the front of the line - completely understandable in the circumstances.

Call 999. A taxi will take you to the door and you’ll need to wait to be seen. An ambulance will treat you on arrival
