Anyone around... scared

I'm home alone with my 12 year old twins as my husband is working away and not due back until tomorrow evening. He's about 6 hours away.

Over the last few days I've had a painful boil under my boob. I saw the GP today as it doubled in size overnight. There is a red circle around it. She prescribed doxycycline (2 a day) and said to phone back if it gets worse.

I've been getting more and more unwell. My left arm has started tingling, I'm sweating with cold hands and feet, the pain is indescribable and I'm exhausted. I slept for 6 hours this afternoon and I'm still utterly exhausted and all my joints hurt.

I've had to phone my father in law who is an hour away to come through to sit with the twins. I'm on hold to 111 but a 45 minute wait to call answer as a minimum they said.

I'm not sure whether just to call a taxi when FIL gets here to go straight to accident and emergency.

I'm a little freaked out at how unwell I feel.

Ambulances can take hours to arrive, I’d do a PP suggested and say to A and E that you think you have sepsis. Hope you’re ok

PlantDoctor · 07/08/2025 23:50

Wishing you a speedy recovery. You're doing the right thing x

OutIsay · 07/08/2025 23:51

Best of luck. You're doing the right thing

I'm just waiting on a taxi. I've started vomiting now and can't stop shaking.

Now that I know the twins are going to be looked after I feel a bit calmer.

Okay try not to worry, that's happened to me before. Don't let them turn you away at A&E as they can sometimes do that. You'll be fine, antibiotics work really quickly. Also as a tip, if you are vomiting they give you a private room in the waiting area usually so you can rest. They'll deal with you very quickly in triage.

Whatshesaid96 · 07/08/2025 23:53

It's OK to be scared

We spend so much of our time worrying about everyone else that actually when it's us that's ill we can really freak out.

hopspot · 07/08/2025 23:54

You’re doing the right thing. Hope you get seen quickly.

Choconuttolata · 07/08/2025 23:56

Taxi to A&E now do not wait for 111 to call back. The ambulance waits are long. You are displaying symptoms of sepsis and you need to be very clear when you get to A&E that this is what you are worried about. They should get IV antibiotics into you within 1 hour as best practice.

Trendyname · 08/08/2025 00:00

Go to A&E. Hope you feel better soon.

usedtobeaylis · 08/08/2025 00:00

Good luck OP. Sepsis comes to mind straight away as so many have already commented, and I'm surprised you've been told to wait around. You're doing the right thing.

DuckbilledSplatterPuff · 08/08/2025 00:01

no new advice to add but couldn't read and run. I hope you get seen quickly and feel better soon x

pippapipps · 08/08/2025 00:01

Op I had similar symptoms and I had sepsis.. I did have other symptoms too that you haven't mentioned and I don't want to worry you but as a few other posters have said please tell them you're worried it's sepsis .. wishing you well

summertimeinLondon · 08/08/2025 00:01

Hoping you are on your way to be seen, and will be better soon, OP!

You can call 999 and they usually say how long it will be - round here I’ve had an ambulance appear within 5 mins for someone who collapsed in the street (a seizure). They can prioritize who gets one and sepsis is pretty serious. I’ve had it twice and was sat in the waiting room for longer waiting to be triaged. You have to collapse to speed that up. Which I did after waiting an hour to be seen in the waiting room

Byjimminy · 08/08/2025 00:02

Good luck OP, absolutely the right call. Hopefully they'll get you sorted and comfortable quickly.

Needsleepneedcoffee · 08/08/2025 00:03

Oh gosh, you've had great advice here. I hope you're on the mend sharpish!

Objectrelations · 08/08/2025 00:03

oh hope you get seen quickly

MellowJello77 · 08/08/2025 00:03

I had an animal bite that turned into cellulitis and was very ill - went twice to hospital first time sent home and told to wait for antibiotics to kick in even though it got progressively worse and spread down my arm until it was completely swollen and unusable.

Private doc told me to go back and demand they give me IV. They still tried to send me off again with an oral dose for a third type of antibiotics yet when they finally tested my bloods infection was through the roof and had to have lots of IV over a week. Advocate hard for yourself and demand they do bloods. Not worth the risk of sepsis. Good luck.

imfae · 08/08/2025 00:04

Hope you are at the hospital now and will get seen by the doctors soon . You are in the best place , take care Flowers

reversegear · 08/08/2025 00:06

Good luck , and the tip to sit near the nurses is great, I had a gallstone jammed and they were happy to keep an eye on me and give me pain relief while I was waiting my turn.

KatieDidIt · 08/08/2025 00:07

I’m rooting for you op… along with all of us here!

SpamBeansAndWaffles · 08/08/2025 00:09

Good luck OP. I hope you get seen quickly and are well cared for.

Enko · 08/08/2025 00:11

Hope you dont have to wait too long in A&E this doesnt sound comfortable for you at all.

Kirbert2 · 08/08/2025 00:11

Good luck, OP. I do hope you mention sepsis, it's amazing how much it is missed.

My son almost died last year due to sepsis rapidly turning into septic shock and leading to a 17 minute cardiac arrest due to the hospital not correctly following its sepsis protocol. His was due to a bowel obstruction.
