Vegetarian not catered for

Invited to a bbq this afternoon, just had the message they haven’t got any vege burgers/meat alternatives. Of course I could buy my own, but why should I? The meat eaters will be having burgers, sausages, chicken whilst, yet again, I’ll be offered a salad and bun.

This happens all the time and for years I just accepted it, as I was the awkward one. I’ve mostly had to cook my own too, usually in the house as the host ‘doesn’t know how to cook a vege burger’! Surely this day it’s easy to grab something vege from any supermarket, big or small. I’m not even fussy what brand!

I’ve bought a nice bottle of wine for the host and a nice dessert to take, tempted not to take it now. Of course I’ll go enjoy the company, probably eat beforehand,

Any other veges find this frustrating, or should we accept we’re the difficult ones and take our own food?

If I knew that these people refuse to cater for me and there's nothing I can eat, I'd eat before I went or take my own and cook it in the kitchen.

Scramblelina · 02/08/2025 14:03

It’s just rude IMO. I’m a vegetarian and have been for most of my life but if I’m hosting a party I ask guests what they do/don’t eat and allergies etc and cater accordingly and ensure there is something for everyone.

Account734 · 02/08/2025 14:05

They sound rude, I've never had that happen. Keep the wine & dessert for yourself.

I’d go to the BBQ via McDonalds or another fast food outlet and turn up with a nice spread of takeaway veggie food for only me to eat!

ClaredeBear · 02/08/2025 14:11

That’s odd, so many people are veggie these days!

I wouldn’t expect veggie food necessarily at a BBQ.

do they know you’re veggie?

I’ve got coeliac disease so I can’t have normal breads or pasta or pizza and I usually ask in advance and if not (which is common) I just grab something from the freezer or pick something up.

I’d rather do that than eat something worth gluten in it although I appreciate being veggie is slightly different.

That seems odd not to expect vegetarian food at a BBQ when quite a few people are vegetarian! It doesn’t have to be just a meat fest.

I wouldn’t do meat substitute burgers or sausages as I know my veggie friends have varying views on them and like different stuff.

I would go for something like halloumi, mushroom and pepper skewers and make sure the salad options were varied and substantial- something like a bean and rice salad and something like feta and couscous. I don’t eat a lot of white bread so myself would be wanting the meat + a decent salad option without a roll!

Yes I’ll enjoy the company and have a good time. It’s the principle of being overlooked again that’s irks me.

I know, I’ve been veggie for over 30 years and have been offered everything from a block of cheddar to just bread and salad… 😱

Is it? I don’t really do bbqs that often and I thought they were more meat and rolls and some salad?

I can’t eat the substitute burger things coz they usually have gluten or dairy or soy in them so I would just do meat and salad but if I knew someone was veggie I’d make an effort for them.

My BIL and SIL had a bbq. They are vegetarians. They sent a message saying the vegetarians would be catered for and for meat eaters to bring meat. I said that it was fine and that I was fine to eat the vegetarian food. They clarified saying that what they meant wasn’t just that they would only do vegetarian food but they were only catering to their vegetarian friends. Therefore I, as someone who eats meat would have to bring my own food regardless if it was meat or not 😂😂

Good grief, that is SO rude. As @pinkfondu said
"It’s rude to invite people to eat and not provide something suitable", or more accurately, it's rude to invite people to eat and them tell them to bring their own stuff as you are only catering for some of the guests.

They sound fun.

Yeah, people who don't like to participate in the suffering of animals are SO boring!

I do eat some meat but not processed meat so I wouldn't eat a sausage or burger so if invited to a BBQ I stick to bread and salad if no veggie food (don't eat meat subs either)

Aavalon57 · 02/08/2025 15:03

I wouldn’t bother going, to be honest. They don’t respect you.

petermaddog · 02/08/2025 15:28

Barbecue, often shortened to BBQ, refers to various cooking methods that use live fire and smoke to cook food, typically meat.l

Notmycircusnotmyotter · 02/08/2025 15:31

I don't accommodate fussy eaters except for the general sides that are for everyone

Erm, thanks for letting us know I suppose. 🤪

Oh come on! Being a vegetarian is hardly a fussy eater ffs!

Livpool · 02/08/2025 16:11

My friend is veggie and asks me to get the veggie/ vegan Richmond sausages as she loves them! I usually cook them inside though - pan fry or air fried to avoid cross contamination

BuildbyNumbere · 02/08/2025 16:11

Meat eaters always like to make it a big drama. Just take your own veggie burger and cook it when there.

Livpool · 02/08/2025 16:13

TheCurious0range · 02/08/2025 11:45

I'm not veggie but we always have vegetable skewers brushed with harissa or pesto or similar, halloumi, corn on the cob, and some good salads with quinoa or couscous , beetroot tzatsiki etc , could add veggie burgers and veggie sausages. I went to a BBQ recently and it was just sausages, chicken, burgers and bread buns I eat meat but it wasn't great! I think the veg and side dishes make it a proper meal

We always do vegetable kebabs too - I eat meat and love them

Xsxjxmx · 02/08/2025 16:13

That's just rude of them imo. If I'm inviting my friend for food, I cater to what they eat! I wouldn't offer a Muslim a pork sausage or a sikh a beef burger and then just shrug and say sorry have a roll and salad. (I hope I got that right!) Is be making sure I had vegetarian or vegan alternatives. My friend is veggie when I invite her for dinner I make something she can eat! When I did my son's bday, I had gluten free and vegan cake because I have friends who can't eat gluten and are vegan. It's common curtsy. You wouldn't say tough to someone with an allergy, well I'd hope not, you'd cater to it. I can understand them saying it can't be cooked separately, BUT stick yours on the BBQ in a silver tray and it's safe from meat contamination, personally it's just laziness.

Not sure McDonald's and nice spread of veggie food belong in the same sentence!

TizerorFizz · 02/08/2025 16:14

@Frugalgal It is if 30 other people are eating meat. I don’t do veggie either but would if I know someone is veggie. Some people change to veggie and they don’t tell you. Too bad for them really as they’ve eaten meat for 50 years!

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 02/08/2025 16:14

I wouldn't bring wine for the host if I wasn't being fed!
However I always bring veggie sausages or quorn burgers to bbq

ayepecking · 02/08/2025 16:15

Surely their salads will be vegetarian?

I do think they are rude however as it would cost them a few quid for buy a packet of vegetarian burgers - and I bet they'll all be eaten. It's not only vegetarians that eat v. burgers.
