Vegetarian not catered for

Invited to a bbq this afternoon, just had the message they haven’t got any vege burgers/meat alternatives. Of course I could buy my own, but why should I? The meat eaters will be having burgers, sausages, chicken whilst, yet again, I’ll be offered a salad and bun.

This happens all the time and for years I just accepted it, as I was the awkward one. I’ve mostly had to cook my own too, usually in the house as the host ‘doesn’t know how to cook a vege burger’! Surely this day it’s easy to grab something vege from any supermarket, big or small. I’m not even fussy what brand!

I’ve bought a nice bottle of wine for the host and a nice dessert to take, tempted not to take it now. Of course I’ll go enjoy the company, probably eat beforehand,

Any other veges find this frustrating, or should we accept we’re the difficult ones and take our own food?

If it’s bbq with a single grill, it’s fair to state that if they are not comfortable with the food being cooked with meat perhaps they could bring something that doesn’t need cooking? It’s kind of awkward with bbq’s. I generally make the effort but it’s not really ideal if there is lots of meat eaters and just one vegetarian, especially fussy ones like my dd! When I’ve thrown dinner parties I’ve been tempted to not include vegetarians for ease, particularly when they have a list of dislikes

And as for the USA, my dd was invited to a bbq and the only vegetarian food was bread, lettuce and Doritos - even the cheese wasn’t vegetarian! She had told them in advance and it was a work event

DD is vegetarian. She reminded me the other day that I said to her that if she wanted to eat a vegetarian diet she couldn't afford to be fussy, and she isn't.

SIL is vegetarian and is very fussy and hard to please.

It's pretty simple. If you have one grill, cook the veggie food first.

When my friends have put a bbq on they get a small disposable bbq that costs just a couple of quid for me.

I appreciate the thought and care my friends make for me to be included in their party.

I’d rather the salad than those processed vegeburgers anyway.

ThePussy · 06/08/2025 18:47

At our last BBQ I made peanut burgers for the veggies, plus kebabs with halloumi and peppers. A big tray of mixed grilled veg and salads. We had to stop the meat eaters from eating the peanut burgers.

caramac04 · 08/08/2025 08:07

@ThePussy I eat meat but the peanut burgers in particular sound great. I’d probably prefer them to meat.

Then she'll be either eating at least a good 20 minutes before everyone else or if waiting for the meat to cook she'll be eating a cold burger.

Better than eating nothing or salad in a bun surely

TheVeronicas · 15/08/2025 11:41

Yes, I resent when I am offered just salad. Not eating meat doesn't mean 'on a diet'!

People can be odd about people who don't eat meat. I went to my parent's for a meal once, and there was nothing for me other than the roast veg. So I cut up more of it and put it in the oven. I went to do something else and when I came back my Mum had taken it out, saying that she'd made enough already.I said yes, but that's ALL I can have, so I thought I'd make myself some more? And got the blankest look one ever did see.

Tricky as presumably it would have to be cooked separately to any meat? In this case I’d provide vegetarian food that didn’t need BBQing - either cold or cooked in the kitchen. I’d certainly have provided something tasty.
i took my vegetarian boyfriend to meet some relatives. The host was an excellent cook and was warned well in advance my bf was a vegetarian. It was a casual lunch no big expectations, but we had driven a couple hours to get there. His solution? Make a meat dish (a one pot thing) and just pick out the meat and serve it to him. Turns out he didn’t ‘agree’ with vegetarianism so that was tough (he didn’t say this at the time I found out later). My BF just politely pushed the food around his plate and then had two servings of the dessert. So embarrassing.

Jesus that's shocking!
