Vegetarian not catered for

Invited to a bbq this afternoon, just had the message they haven’t got any vege burgers/meat alternatives. Of course I could buy my own, but why should I? The meat eaters will be having burgers, sausages, chicken whilst, yet again, I’ll be offered a salad and bun.

This happens all the time and for years I just accepted it, as I was the awkward one. I’ve mostly had to cook my own too, usually in the house as the host ‘doesn’t know how to cook a vege burger’! Surely this day it’s easy to grab something vege from any supermarket, big or small. I’m not even fussy what brand!

I’ve bought a nice bottle of wine for the host and a nice dessert to take, tempted not to take it now. Of course I’ll go enjoy the company, probably eat beforehand,

Any other veges find this frustrating, or should we accept we’re the difficult ones and take our own food?

Shitty hosting. Whatever dietary requirements my guests had I would do my best to meet them. Also expecting you to cook it yourself- for FFS. As you say not at all hard to pick up a pack of veggie burgers, offer some salads etc. I always send guests the BBQ 'menu' in advance so they can say if they don't have what they like there and/or can bring supplementary items if they'd prefer. If I were you I wouldn't bring the wine and dessert and would eat before you go.

101Nutella · 02/08/2025 16:57

It’s really poor to not cater for veggie. It’s not hard at all is it. If they are close to you it’s really lazy to not even provide:
pack of veggie sausages or/and burgers.
corn on the cobs
potato salad / coleslaw.
halloumi/veg skewers
I wouldn’t take anything if someone can’t be bothered to cater for me tbh.
when I host, I make sure I get stuff in that the guests like or want.
im sorry they think it’s ok to behave like this!

These sound too yummy I bet the meat eaters pinch them!

That's the thing! Meat eaters take meat plus all the veggie stuff. I'm guilty of that myself so always would cater for plenty of vegetable based dishes. Nearly all my friends are vegetarian so BBQs are quite rare, I think a lot of people do just associate them with huge piles of sausages and burgers.

Frankly I get it.
I am fed up of catering for faddy eaters, at one party we had vegetarian, vegan, keto, carb free, nut free, gluten free and dairy intolerant!! So yes, if you want to come and socialise please do but if you aren’t going to eat what’s on offer please bring your own.

FlorenceAndTheSewingMachine · 02/08/2025 16:58

I'm not vegetarian but so many times we see people cook meat then throw on a veggie burger, we have a separate grill on our bbq for vegetarian food my DH even insists on separate cooking utensils as he used to be vegetarian, I think if you are hosting you should cater for everyone you have invited unless it's bring a dish but that's not what this is about.

LeesLady72 · 02/08/2025 16:58

I’d be more offended to turn up and be offered Quorn or similar. I find fake meat utterly revolting and you can also develop a very sudden allergy to it, makes you violently sick, even if you’ve eaten it for years.

Breadcat24 · 02/08/2025 17:00

That is terrible, if you are hosting you should make sure everyone has something nice to eat- vegetarian is not that difficult for a bbq- halloumi, corn on the cob, veggie skewers, mushrooms, nice salads and sides
it is not even that big an effort!
Shocking that they made no effort at all
I would be very cheesed off - but you were probably wishing that they had cheese

Seriously you would be offended that someone had tried to accommodate your demands? WTF

OnAMissionToLoseWeight · 02/08/2025 17:01

I think you have crap friends!

l have been vegetarian since I was 13 (many decades ago!) and never have had any issues. All my friends and family cater for me. I’m not fussy. A veggie burger and some salad is enough to keep me happy.

Even at work my boss always ensures there are veggie options at work events and he tells my clients if they plan on catering for me at all day events. I’ll

HumanRightsAreHumanRights · 02/08/2025 17:01

They like you enough to invite you.

I don't invite or cater to vegetarians/vegans unless they are prepared to serve me a meal including meat/fish/whatever was not vegetarian/vegan in their own home.

Got very tired of special people who want me to cater to them at their home and at mine while never catering to me.

DrPrunesqualer · 02/08/2025 17:06

Well this thread has given me ‘food for thought 🤪’ for tomorrows lunch

Raspberry and passion fruit cheesecake
Sweetcorn
Halloumi
Grilled cauliflower
Veggie skewer things people keep mentioning

thanks everyone

If you invite someone you cater for them, being Vegetarian is hardly unusual or extreme is it?
Having said that I know DD (veggie) wouldn't eat from someone elses BBQ as she can't be sure there is no cross contamination - we have a tray we use for meat when we BBQ as we are around 80%Veggie anyway.
They are being rude

This. ^ They clearly CBA to make any effort with you/for you @ParrotsAteThemAll Do NOT take any wine or dessert for them. Fuck 'em!

MasterBeth · 02/08/2025 17:08

You are being unreasonable to spell veggie as veejh.

Katebridgerton25 · 02/08/2025 17:08

I’m a little bit 6 of one half a dozen of the other on this. On the one hand I like to cater for everyone so would say to bring anything special they’d like that isn’t on the list of what I’m doing, but there’s always meat, fish, vegetarian and vegan offerings. However on the other hand when I go to a BBQ I take my own plant based burger I’ve made or salad bowl to eat because it’s just easier. I just don’t really think much of it, also it’s easier for me to track macros so probably that. Also my in laws would cook anything vegetarian on the same bit covered in meat juices, so I’d rather just have it with me, I don’t mind cooking it for other people but I’ve never liked the taste or smell for me to eat.

❤️

I couldn’t eat anything covered in meat fat
Thats not veggie

I take my own frying pan etc on self catering holidays aswell. It’s actually quite normal amongst veggies to do this.

Personally, I can’t eat quorn at all. Both are on my list of foods I can’t eat due to allergies and intolerances. So I would rather just bring my own stuff :)

JohnTheRevelator · 02/08/2025 17:10

I find it very odd in this day and age that people would host a barbecue or party and not cater for vegetarians. So many people are vegetarian or even vegan these days. So no,I don't think YABU.

Do people really cook the veggie burgers on the same grill as the meat ones?

That's bonkers! 😆 Whenever anyone does it for my DC, (both veggies,) they just pop theirs in the oven (in the kitchen.) As you say, it's not vegetarian if it's got meat juice on it. Ewwww. 😖

Relaxd · 02/08/2025 17:11

They’re just being unnecessarily off with you. We haven’t been to any barbecues that haven’t had a few good veggie friendly sides that everyone can enjoy: coleslaw, Halloumi, humous, potato salad etc, If it was me (and I was bothered about contamination) I’d ask if they have an air fryer and then bung in some halloumi and stick it in a bun, it’s particularly lovely with some mango chutney. Oh and don’t feel the need to take good wine if you’re buying your own food,

ExtraFatFatBall · 02/08/2025 17:11

Was it a last minute invite and they just thought you might have fun or was it pre planned?

Fair enough if the first, rude if second. Some vegetarians are really fussy about what faux meats they will eat (if any) but if you're hosting and planning a BBQ you can ask the guest before hand.

ExtraFatFatBall · 02/08/2025 17:12

I'm assuming last minute as I don't know how you can an a BBQ in this weather!

I wouldn’t be offended at all. It’s the thought that counts and I think it’s lovely when people remember I’m veggie.

I went for Christmas dinner once and everything had been cooked in goose fat 😂 I’m not fussy i just normally pile my plate with vegetables and potatoes but they’d done everything in it. They couldn’t understand why I asked if they minded if I just had some toast instead and yes they knew I didn’t eat meat etc. 😂

But that’s an allergy intolerance issue. Not a vegetarian one

My aunt in Ireland used to cook a classic Irish cabbage potato and bacon all in the same big pot. Stewing all day
My food was the cabbage and potatoes from the same pot
🤣

Then there’s the French 7 course menu at a wedding. My veggie alternatives were all fish 🤣. Even dessert wasn’t veggie
I got quite drunk at that one. The wine was from their own vineyard and was the only veggie thing at the wedding !!! 🥳
