Leave the TV on standby? As in if you know you're not going to be using it again for the next few hours / days do you switch it off via remote control or do you switch off the actual plug?

Go...

I just say 'Alexa, turn off the TV' and she does.

So standby for me.

MyDogHumpsThings · 30/07/2025 12:36

I turn it off at the wall. I can't stand the sound of electric! Not if it's going to be switched on again soon, but that's rarely the case.

Eerrnohun · 30/07/2025 12:37

Never at the wall. Totally pointless.

My in-laws turn off literally every plug every single night though.

ConsultMe · 30/07/2025 12:37

I never watch my tv but keep it plugged in.

Go where, OP?

Turning off every plug is insane. I probably have 2 dozen sockets minimum across my home, perhaps more. Couldn’t imagine walking around switching everything off.

Oldglasses · 30/07/2025 12:39

Via the remote.

Spindrifts · 30/07/2025 12:40

Standby unless we are going away for the night.

OtherS · 30/07/2025 12:40

Always standby, never plug. If going away and I remember, I might turn it off on the tv itself. Not even sure where it's plugged in tbh, there's a nest of wires and plugs that emerge from behind a cabinet, no idea which one's which - other than Sky, which is helpfully round and has 'Sky' written on it in big letters.

BabyEatsEverything · 30/07/2025 12:41

Standby as can’t access the plug behind the giant tv without moving heavy furniture!

BabyEatsEverything · 30/07/2025 12:41

Don’t even turn it off at the plug if going away for a week!

G5000 · 30/07/2025 12:41

Standby. ours is Samsung Frame, so on standby, it looks like a painting.

GasPanic · 30/07/2025 12:41

High energy appliances are most likely to cause fires.

That is stuff like washing machines/tumble dryers, kettles, ovens, toasters, fridges, dishwashers, heaters anything that generates significant heat.

Stuff like tvs much less so. And they don't cost much money to keep on standby. Unless they are really old tvs.

Waterbaby41 · 30/07/2025 12:43

Standby. Only time it gets switched off at the wall is when there is a power cut!!

Anotherdaysameolddrama · 30/07/2025 12:43

The plug is right down behind a heavy cabinet, so remote only here.

Delphigirl · 30/07/2025 12:44

standby forever, never turn it off

eyeses · 30/07/2025 12:45

Standby always.
Trying to find the right plug would cause catastrophic badness.

eyeses · 30/07/2025 12:46

I never watch my tv but keep it plugged in.

Where's that 😂response gone?

Cherrysoup · 30/07/2025 12:49

TV gets switched off, but with the switch, not at the plug.

cobrakaieaglefang · 30/07/2025 12:50

Standby as when we turned it off at plug while on holiday it missed updates and crashed and wouldn't work properly.

snowgirl1 · 30/07/2025 12:51

My techy DH set something up to completely power off the TV (and some other things) at 11pm every night.

marylou25 · 30/07/2025 12:51

Off at the plug by way of remote control socket, couldn't be reaching down back of tv to get to socket so remote one is my solution. My old tv I used to turn off the switch on telly itself but new one has none! It's either on standby or plug off options only

LardyCakeLover · 30/07/2025 12:52

Just looked up my TV spec - draws 0.3W on standby. So assuming it's on standby for 20 hours a day:

0.3 20 / 1000 30p/kWh = 0.18p x 365 = 65.7p per year.

Think I'll keep it on standby

Flossflower · 30/07/2025 12:53

Standby we turn off with the remote. We do this when we go on holiday as we record programs while we are away. We have a sky box, which we also leave on standby. If we turned the sky box off at the plug we would need to restart it every time.

Becs258 · 30/07/2025 12:54

Standby, but in laws always do it at the plug.
