Leave the TV on standby? As in if you know you're not going to be using it again for the next few hours / days do you switch it off via remote control or do you switch off the actual plug?

I turn it off at the plug. Also a 70s child and remember fire hazard adverts. It's just a habit now and I don't even think about it.

Tryingtokeepgoing · 30/07/2025 12:14

Mine are switched off, but only because I have smart home set ups that means all the lights / sockets can be controlled remotely and they are always set to run pre-programmed routes on lights / sockets / timing etc. So if I do nothing then the media stuff will switch of at midnight, when the lighting flips to night mode

However, I suspect the smart sockets / lights hardware use at least as much power as leaving the TV on standby, so it's not an energy saving tool ;)

MissAnthr0pe · 30/07/2025 12:15

Always on standby, unless I'm away on holiday and absolutely sure there isn't a programme I'd want to record remotely.

Jennyathemall · 30/07/2025 12:15

Standby all the time. Life’s too short to be concerned about things like that.

GrumpyMenopausalWombWielder · 30/07/2025 12:16

I have a smart plug linked to my tv so I can’t switch it off via my phone.

Gamerlady · 30/07/2025 12:16

Tv gets switched off at the wall but leave the skyq on standby cause of recordings

Seeline · 30/07/2025 12:16

Standby - again too many cables in awkward places to unplug. I've never noticed an off switch in the TV. Suppose there must be one somewhere.

GentleSheep · 30/07/2025 12:17

Standby.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 30/07/2025 12:17

Off at the switch but not at the socket. Software updates are pushed through at night. Router on constantly, other items that get updated are on standby.

MIL always wonders why her stuff takes ages to start up each time she plugs it all back in and switches it on.

GasPanic · 30/07/2025 12:21

Standby doesn't use much extra power on a new tv.

I would unplug if I was going to be away for a few days and fully disconnect if there was a thunderstorm or I knew their was going to be a power outage as I like my (expensive) tv.

Knittedfairies2 · 30/07/2025 12:24

Never left on standby.

Marmiteontoastgirlie · 30/07/2025 11:36

Just remote, have never switched it off at the wall and didn’t realise that was a thing!

same here. its something ive never actually thought about, ive always just switched the TV off using the remote and yes my red standby light is on on my tv. only time ive switched off at the wall socket is if we've been going on holiday for a week or so.

SisterMargaretta · 30/07/2025 12:26

Off at wall. DH is obsessive about this.

whirlyhead · 30/07/2025 12:27

Standby. I live in Spain where sockets don’t have switches so you have to unplug if want to totally turn something off. Then you have the hassle of plugging back in so I don’t bother.

SparklyGlitterballs · 30/07/2025 12:28

Standby, because I'd have to move a heavy TV cabinet to be able to reach the plugs.

ThePhantomoftheEcobubbleOpera · 30/07/2025 12:28

Just about everything is on standby - including the tv.

CalzoneOnLegs · 30/07/2025 12:29

Standby because (mine anyway) does a re-boot if powered off

I'm in Sweden and it's the same. So I have everything plugged into an extension lead that has a switch. It's not ideal but the cost of things being on standby makes it necessary.

mumu54 · 30/07/2025 12:32

Turn the set off. Nothing is left on standby.

Middlemarch123 · 30/07/2025 12:33

Used to leave it on standby until one of the naughty cats sat his fat bum on the remote and turned it on at 4.00 a.m. waking the whole house up! Now turn it off at the set.

AhBiscuits · 30/07/2025 12:33

I cant recall having turned it off at the wall ever in my life.

TimeForABreak4 · 30/07/2025 12:33

Standby, only off at the wall when going away.

DeedlessIndeed · 30/07/2025 12:34

gamerchick · 30/07/2025 11:34

Depends on the telly. If you go over 55 inches, stand by costs more, as does general running of the thing.

Another good reason to only have a smaller TV! I watch an embarrassing far too much television as it is without the blasted thing costing an arm and a leg to run😅

Onelifeonly · 30/07/2025 12:35

Standby always except when we all go away on holiday, which is almost never as grown up kids live with us.
