Leave the TV on standby? As in if you know you're not going to be using it again for the next few hours / days do you switch it off via remote control or do you switch off the actual plug?

Go...

Stupid smart TV only has standby and the plug is not easily reachable. My preference is for off when not in use.

KeepcalmandtellthemtoFoff · 30/07/2025 12:54

Standby as the "off" button on the remote essentially puts on standby

Hardlyworking · 30/07/2025 11:29

On standby 24/7 365. For the sake of approx. 60p a year saving I'm not constantly rooting around for the plug. I'm frugal but that's ridiculous!

Me too! It only gets switched off at the wall if we’re not going to be in the house for weeks on end.

OhHellolittleone · 30/07/2025 12:55

Even my crazy ‘turn off at the wall’ ‘totally unplug when going away’ husband puts the tv on standby and we have smart sockets that turn them off overnight from 11pm- 6am.

SoftPillow · 30/07/2025 12:55

Standby as it records overnight and it’s slow to restart.

My parents turn absolutely everything off at the plug. I assumed this was a generational thing.

LadyRoughDiamond · 30/07/2025 12:55

Standby, but my Mum always switches off at the plug. It’s a generational thing. She also keeps her mobile phone switched off to save the battery 😬

ConsultMe · 30/07/2025 12:38

Turning off every plug is insane. I probably have 2 dozen sockets minimum across my home, perhaps more. Couldn’t imagine walking around switching everything off.

I fully agree with you. It's such a pointless waste of time to me but they're very stuck on their ways. Recently redid their bathroom and kept single hot and cold taps. Baffling.

What's more annoying is I bought them a gift that requires power and I realised they never use it because they never bother turning that particular plug back on.

MintTwirl · 30/07/2025 12:56

Stand by. DH switches everything off if we go away, I wouldn’t bother,

mamagogo1 · 30/07/2025 12:56

Standby unless heading on a long holiday, my parents are convinced I’ll burn my house down!

user1476613140 · 30/07/2025 12:57

It's left on standby unless we go on holiday.

Sera1989 · 30/07/2025 12:57

I don't turn the TV off at the wall - does it really draw much current when it's not on? I also wouldn't call it "stand by" because it's not like when you have a computer that's gone to sleep but all your windows and tabs are still open, my TV starts from scratch when turned on.

I turn off all the plug sockets in the kitchen and the hob/oven fused switch as the hob is really easy to turn on and one of my cats occasionally chews wires

Sundaycrunch · 30/07/2025 12:58

Standby if not using for a few hours. Always switch off at the wall overnight.

Isobel201 · 30/07/2025 12:59

TV and game console is left on standby as they can do updates overnight.

user1471427667 · 30/07/2025 13:00

Switch off via remote . If we go away for a few days or more, and if we remember, then switch off at wall

OldieButBaddie · 30/07/2025 13:00

Always leave on standby
It's a PITA to access the plug

Alondra · 30/07/2025 13:01

Always on standby, switched off from remote, unless we go on holidays and turn off all appliances from power switches.

Sortin · 30/07/2025 13:02

Is this about cost or fire risk?

BubblyBath178 · 30/07/2025 13:02

Why would anyone turn it off at the wall?? That’s weird. I just press the red button and that’s off I think.

needtostopnamechanging · 30/07/2025 13:05

off at wall every night

tends to go on in the evening or a bit earlier if we are charging something ( same dis board )

edit to add - a mixture of avoiding TV standby costs and reducing any fire potential - it’s such a trivial action that it’s worth while

LBOCS2 · 30/07/2025 13:05

Everything in our house gets switched to standby rather than off at the plug.

Epidote · 30/07/2025 13:05

I have it switched off, and unplugged but I watch it one every few months so there is a no brain for me.

BeanQuisine · 30/07/2025 13:05

MiddleAgedDread · 30/07/2025 11:21

Always on standby because it's on the same plug sockets as the wifi!
my parents always turn theirs off at the wall.

Ditto.

crumblingschools · 30/07/2025 13:05

Left on standby if in the house during the day. Off at the plug if out during the day and off at night when we go to bed.

MrBootsMedicine · 30/07/2025 13:05

Standby because it does not have an on/off switch. My last tv had a physical switch so that would have been turned off. This one is operated by the remote to turn it on or off.

I never switch the plug off as it is behind the tv bench and my arms are not long enough to be able to do that without pulling the bench out and reaching down the back of the tv. Not happening.

My Dad is in his early 80s, he does switch it off at the wall but has his tv stand really far off the wall to be able to do this. When he was a child in the 1950s his house was struck by lightning via the tv aerial and it destroyed the tv, (yes, his Dad was minted to afford a tv in first place) and the electrics had to be redone. This was drilled into us with the same ferocity as don't run with scissors when we were children.

afaloren · 30/07/2025 13:05

Standby. The plug is behind a cabinet.
