Labour isn't working - Thread 5

A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. Labour isn't working!

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

Yey! Fantastic.
Sorry he's feeling a bit flat about his mates moving on. Its a big change for them isn't it. I hope he feels better once he's had chance to absorb everything. DD has been doing a really good impression of a rabbit in headlights this morning. Lots of emotions on results day ❤️

Thanks, I'm sure he will. Well done to your dd too - congratulations!

Arrearing50 · 21/08/2025 10:24

It’s tricky isn’t it - I look back with rose tinted glasses about GCSEs, A levels etc but transitions are always a mixed bag

ThePhantomoftheEcobubbleOpera · 21/08/2025 10:09

Ds has done really well. He got a crop of high grades and he can do the A-levels he wanted, including Further Maths as a fourth. So brilliant, but he seems a bit flat about it all - I think it was quite sad as the reality of all his mates scattering to different colleges sunk in.

Great well done to your DS!

Yes it’s much change for them now for the next few years. Exciting times but they might not see that yet!

Well done him! Most of dd's friends are moving on to 6th form with her, but much harder if many of his are moving on.

As an aside, i was shocked how adult all the boys picking up their results looked!

ThePhantomoftheEcobubbleOpera · 21/08/2025 11:14

Yeah, we just have a secondary school here. My kid is off to a stand alone sixth form college, some are joining the sixth forms of schools that do have one and some are doing vocational courses at another college - and they're all miles apart. So it was inevitable but it just took the gloss off.

Anyway, I see Jenrick is making hay with the whole flag debacle. It's an easy photo opportunity.

You can see why the Home Office was spitting tacks over the ruling. But it was a manifesto pledge to reduce the use of hotels - when were they thinking of getting on with that?

TheNuthatch · 21/08/2025 11:55

If Labour do manage to stop housing migrants in hotels, the next question will be where are they? Starmer's remarks in his select committee grilling suggest that he thinks there is plenty of social housing that can be used.

Legal migration on the other hand has fallen thanks to measures introduced by Sunak/Cleverly, and kept by Labour. Total immigrants in year to June down by 30%.

Health and Care - visas down 88%
Dependents of students - visas down 81%

I never understood why we gave visas to dependents of students. My ds studied abroad and it definitely did not mean that his family could join him.

Other councils (including labour ones) are considering legal action after the court ruling on Epping. This could get messy.

God knows, there doesn't seem to be much of any plan. But surely they made a plan, they had 14 years to think of one, after all.

Yes, absolutely.

ThePhantomoftheEcobubbleOpera · 21/08/2025 12:15

Economists seem to be settling on the idea that we won't see any further reductions in the base rate at all this year. There was still hope that there'd be a further reduction in November but recent financial dates has all but killed off that hope.

Government issues urgent appeal for 5,000 homes to house 20,000 migrants

So, this is the plan? Send out a bat signal to property specialists to buy, lease or rent houses. Yeah, that'll definitely calm things down 🙈

Yep, Blackrock!

EmpressoftheMundane · 21/08/2025 12:42

Watching the news with my youngest DD, who is not in the slightest politically minded (engineering student), she remarked, why don’t they house all the migrants in the BS universities that can fill places. 🫣

Certain sort of symmetry there. My girl is a problem solver! 😂

😂😂 Your dd has more sense than this government.
Welcome.

There'll be able to house them in all the high street shops that buckle under the strain of business hating policies if they hang on a bit.

Yep. Some economists have gone further and suggested that the most recent interest rate cut by the BofE was a mistake. I think the tally was 5-4 for that one, so I doubt they'll cut again this year.

That telegraph story 🙈 christ on a bike. Are they mad! Talk about pouring fuel on a fire.

Did Starmer really think that he would just stand at a podium, announce that he wanted to "smash the gangs" in his best nasal voice, and the migrants would just stop coming? What planet are they on ffs.

I wonder if anyone who voted Labour feels failed by the empty promises to end the hotel housing and are still waiting for the elite border security force to kick in any day now 🤔

Find out now

Reform 33 (+2)
Labour 18(-1)
Conservatives 17 (-2)
Libdem 12 (nc)
Greens 10 (nc)

Has there ever been so much clear water between reform and labour? 15 points. Whenever Labour fail on immigration it's a free dinner for Reform.

ThePhantomoftheEcobubbleOpera · 21/08/2025 13:35

Yes, I read that the BofE should have increased the base rate to counter inflation and they are kicking the can down the road.

IAmNotASheep · 21/08/2025 13:41

TheNuthatch · 20/08/2025 09:34

Yes, its really tough at the moment. We're really feeling it at the moment as there isn't much work around. DH is usually un-flappable, but right now he's flapping.

As Architects we’ve noticed a downward trend on new projects.
Starting to twiddle our fingers.
The construction industry is a good marker for a recession and this feels like it did at the beginning of the last one

IAmNotASheep · 21/08/2025 13:43

Ps
Im joining you too after years of hiding 😗

Arrearing50 · 21/08/2025 13:45

Bailey has had a lot of flack, got to think some political pressure came to bear on him even when the whole independence of the BoE thing.

Liker · 21/08/2025 14:08

Congratulations to all with DC who get their results today.

I think Labour will be panicking and house the immigrants in private rented houses which will cause more uproar. Why not house them on ships anchored offshore in the Channel, monitored by our forces, and they can't enter Britain unless processed as eligible.

Alas not to worry, Yvette Cooper will be announcing the numbers soon on her one in one out deal and we can congratulate her on a job well done.

Also agree about Truss - she handled it very very badly but was on the correct train of thought. She may have been outlived by a lettuce, but unfortunately for us the wet lettuce stayed on in No. 10 and is now in charge.
