A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. Labour isn't working!

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

Thanks for the welcomes everyone; nice to feel I won't be eaten alive on here. 😂

I hope there's better news and work coming down the pipeline @TheNuthatch The thing is, there's so much that needs to be done that the shrinking industry and lost skills from those who cannot survive this hump will become its own bottle neck. It's madness.

Thank you. I hope so.

Same here; my OH is in construction and my son is in an admin role in construction; both are expecting to lose their jobs over the next year. Hoping my OH can find something else before he retires but its stressful.

I'm really sorry to hear that. I hope they both find something. DH and I run a small firm so I know how difficult it is at the moment. Flowers

The Unite union are calling for higher wages in response to inflation figures.

'Cause that'll help!

Meanwhile in the private sector, wages are further depressed because of the NI / NMW increases and loads of people will be lucky to get even a below-inflation pay rise.

I doubt many sectors will avoid redundancies. Our retail clients have been cutting back a fair bit. I expect the construction ones to do so as well.

Not one bloody good idea they’ve had not one. Very interesting that chart @twistyizzy about 3 spooks in a year with no ousting mind you who are they going to oust and who comes in. Atkeast Rishi was intelligent these muppets not so much - there are too many not very bright people with too much power

there are too many not very bright people

This. 💯. There are brighter people in the white house at the moment. Terrifying.

ps. Not very bright and exceedingly bitter. A terrible combination.

Yes DH said last night that he is getting worried that he feels Trump is the only one making sense at the moment!

There’s a lot of construction work in the ME, if he wanted to top up his pension before retirement.

Arrearing50 · 20/08/2025 10:41

Yeah my firm has laid off people, is going to lay off more before year end or early next I expect and they settled on less than 2 percent pay rises this year…

DenizenOfAisleOfShame · 20/08/2025 10:48

Anyone know the latest on medics’ strikes? As far as I understood it the doctors have more strike dates to come and nurses had voted to strike. Is that right?

If they’re out together that would make a bloody gloomy autumn, what with the ‘no more tax rises’ budget 🙄 and all.

Don't forget potential teacher strikes too

Julen7 · 20/08/2025 11:04

Wonder if Reeves regrets giving doctors & teachers inflation busting pay rises now when they are just coming back for more.

Why is it so bad? Genuine question - I thought Labour were trying to massively ramp up house-building, and that availability of construction workers was the main blocker?

Arrearing50 · 20/08/2025 11:17

Hi @strawberrybubblegum not sure I’m getting you, busy morning - I don’t work in construction although we do have construction customers.

Sorry @arrearing50 , @D23456789 mentioned construction work and I thought you meant the same.

Arrearing50 · 20/08/2025 12:20

I wasn’t fantastically clear!

There are a few different things going on rn. Obviously labour costs thanks to the budget, capital spending not filtering through, rising cost of materials, new builds not selling, less commercial contracts. I don't work in housing but figures show low numbers built in the last year.
Purely anecdotal, but a lack of available construction workers is not what I'm seeing day to day.

Anyone hear the latest rest is money about the debt spiral? Peston and Steph MCGovern saying that economic growth now so critical a problem that we needed a group sitting on top of all govt policy reviewing it for effects on growth and a group fk peoooe who’d grown their businesses the most recently to come up with policy.

now that’s a good idea - there are good ideas out there but labour never seem to listen.

it’s funny, I feel as though Truss and Kwarteng was along the right lines but they didn’t read the room. We really need a bigger idea than just taking more money out of people’s pockets endlessly.

Arrearing50 · 21/08/2025 06:48

Ps Steph McG has been a continual non fan of labour as a business owner, she’s the reason I listen as Peston can sometimes be a bit ‘all well run businesses should be able to weather this and that’

Yes I listened to something a while ago on R4 saying Truss was actually right but it was presented appallingly. I wish I had paid more attention at the time, it was just before/during the election....
