I'm going to the fish and chips shop. What will you have?

So much choice today but I'll keep it simple and traditional: fish, chips, scraps, salt and vinegar. There's two shops I frequent - never known if it's cod or haddock.

I actually like the non brewed condiment, they used to sell it at Tescos but I haven't seen it for ages.

Halloumi fries with chips scraps and loads of salt and vinegar for me (am a halfway veggie reasonably chilled about meat contamination)

On holiday in the Lake District many years ago, the local chippy offered "fish & chips" in 2 different sizes. Plus what was called bread & "butter" which was marg.
I asked "what is the fish, please?"
Blank stare from server, she shouted to the back room, & came back with the answer "it's fish".
There was a muttered "bloody southerners" as she gave me my change.

Identical situation happened to my friend (yes, a softy southerner) in a chippy in Scotland.
"What fish is it please?"
Hard stare -- 'Fush' .
(friend relayed the story in the correct accent.)

I’ll have a white pudding supper and DH will have a smoked sausage supper. We’ll cut them in half so we each have both. Yum 😋!

MrsSethGecko · 04/07/2025 18:33

Haddock, chips, mushy peas, salt and onion vinegar, pickled egg, ketchup, and a dandelion and burdock.

It's a large dill pickle!

I'd love this!

Madcats · 04/07/2025 18:47

On another forum, somebody explained that “non-brewed condiment” is alcohol-free and also cheaper.

Still looking for guidance re “gravy”? Bisto-like?

I discovered Poutine a month or two ago; marvellous stuff!
