I'm going to the fish and chips shop. What will you have?

So much choice today but I'll keep it simple and traditional: fish, chips, scraps, salt and vinegar. There's two shops I frequent - never known if it's cod or haddock.

Haddock, chips, mushy peas, tartar AND ketchup and a lemon wedge. With some shit white bread and butter to make a ketchup butty. Light hoppy ale on the side. Thanks

What part of the country do you live in to get scraps?
I would get them when I was in Lincolnshire, but it’s not a thing in the north-west or south-east (both places I moved to).
cod, chips and scraps sounds good to me. Salt, no vinegar though

I was living in Yorkshire when I got scraps. They're not a thing in Berkshire sadly.

Chip shops are definitely better up North!

Whats wally?

It's a large dill pickle!

Westfacing · 04/07/2025 18:09

I haven't had Vimto for about 60 years!

Someone remind me - did it come concentrated like Ribena or was it a bottle of pop e.g. D&B or Tizer?

wayyytoomuch · 04/07/2025 18:10

Tinned Roe (can’t believe nobody has said this yet!), battered/orange chips with way too much salt and vinegar, mushy peas. I might throw in a pickled egg and a pickled onion as well.

youreactinglikeafunmum · 04/07/2025 18:11

Battered sausage, chips swimming in salt and vinegar please

Edit - and a coke zero. I've given them up so would LOVE one

Nobackstagepasses · 04/07/2025 18:13

Large chips and beef burger in batter. Pancake/Spring roll if they have any.

If it was the local chippy just fish and chips. If I was in Lancashire I'd have steak pudding, chips and gravy. If I was in Wigan I'd have rag pudding, chips and gravy.

Never had rag pudding before last week.. my god it's lovely..

Just googled rag pudding. That looks delish. I like steak and kidney pudding, so pretty similar. I live in the West Country so no chance of getting it here.

Fish and chips with gravy on the chips. Salt n vinegar.

Haven’t heard of scraps before?! I am Scottish and we have fritters here, assuming it’s similar.

Edited

Scraps are just small pieces of batter that come off the fish during frying. Also known as bits.

I would have a chip butty with mushy peas. My favourite. Loads of butter in the butty.

HOWEVER, your title has made me realise that I say 'we're going to have fish and chipS for tea'. But I would say 'I'm going to the fish and chip shop' (no S)

Weird.

Both good coz they mean the same thing - indulgence!

Small cod and chips (always generous) and pea fritter with mayonnaise please.

Mayo ?!? That's a posh chippy.

kikikaka · 04/07/2025 18:22

Chips with gravy or curry sauce, battered sausage and a fish cake, I usually can’t eat it all but I need everything

Thisisnotmyid · 04/07/2025 18:22

Half fried pizza supper loaded with salt and vinegar

TheTecknician · 04/07/2025 18:23

I hope the vinegar on the counter is actually vinegar and not the 'non-brewed condiment' that we see behind the counter. What's the point of that stuff anyway?

Skate for me, rock for DH and a portion of chips to share (they tend to be very large here) plus mushy peas and some homemade tartare sauce.

I know some skate species are under threat especially in the west of England but this would be thornback from the Channel or North Sea.

Brightmoonlight · 04/07/2025 18:23

@oncemoreuntothebeachdearfriends But everyone round here has Mayo!!
The sachets are just as difficult to open as any other and likely to dribble over your top.

Oldandcobwebby · 04/07/2025 18:23

Haddock and chips with a pot of Irish curry sauce. I'll have a cold brew coffee to wash it down. (Got some chilled in the fridge if you want to share)

Rissole, chips, curry sauce, salt & vinegar, and a can of dandelion & burdock please.

Rissole and chips with beans please.
i wonder how many people know what a rissole is?

Deathraystare · 04/07/2025 18:27

Nah I;m good thanks. Don't fancy greasy fish and chips. Just had a jacket potato and butter.

oncemoreuntothebeachdearfriends · 04/07/2025 18:27

On holiday in the Lake District many years ago, the local chippy offered "fish & chips" in 2 different sizes. Plus what was called bread & "butter" which was marg.
I asked "what is the fish, please?"
Blank stare from server, she shouted to the back room, & came back with the answer "it's fish".
There was a muttered "bloody southerners" as she gave me my change.

I imagine it is cheap. Our chippy has salt and vinegar "vinegar " I've not tried it i prefer to do my own from home.
