I'm going to the fish and chips shop. What will you have?

So much choice today but I'll keep it simple and traditional: fish, chips, scraps, salt and vinegar. There's two shops I frequent - never known if it's cod or haddock.

That battered scallop does not look like a scallop as in shellfish, I think it's potato?

Ah my first thought was shell fish as we don't have potato scallops in Scotland.
Now that you mentioned it I have saw it on other chipper thread's.👍

Elmo230885 · 05/07/2025 07:04

Is it one of those chippies with a great veggie option?
My nearest one is rubbish! I had battered halloumi on holiday, it was lovely but I think I'm still walking off the calories now 10 months later 😅

Ladaha · 05/07/2025 07:10

Rag pudding and chips, gravy separate, curry separate, and a dab, please.

Come on enlighten us.. What's a rag pudding and a dab?

MermaidMummy06 · 05/07/2025 07:17

Grilled Barra & chips loaded with chicken salt.

Now I want it, but no one else in my house eats fish ☹️

Ladaha · 05/07/2025 07:20

But a scallop in the chippy is not a shellfish, @Kimwestonhelpless , it's battered potato and sometimes with a slice of onion inside.

Our chippy does battered halloumi and I love it but I cant even imagine the calories 🙈

Il have to give it a try as that sounds nice.

Civilservant · 05/07/2025 07:22

Ooh that’d be lovely!

VerbenaGirl · 05/07/2025 07:25

Large haddock, mushy peas and a handful of someone else’s chips!

I'm in NE Scotland and they're not a thing.
I posted that I'd made a mistake and realised what you described I've saw on another chipper thread (chip shop)👍😁

Ladaha · 05/07/2025 07:39

Oh sorry, the caching didn't show me your post! (The view doesn't always update right away)

In Manchester we said scollop not scallop, but it was spelled scallop on the board.

firsttimemum99x · 05/07/2025 08:00

Steak and kidney pie, chips with salt and curry sauce

A lot of chip shops, including the OPs, going by the mention of Gay Lane Fisheries, fry in beef dripping so nothing is vegetarian except the mushy peas or curry sauce.

It’s the same idea as a potato fritter here. Never seen onion in them but we definitely have potato fritters.

TheTecknician · 05/07/2025 09:13

Is everybody full up now?

OP posts:
Kimwestonhelpless · 05/07/2025 09:15

Tattie fritters.
Tarkan you must be a bit posh
Potato fritters in a Morningside accent.🤣🤣🤣

thefamous5 · 05/07/2025 09:23

If its guaranteed to be good fish...fish, chips and mushy peas.

Otherwise a saveloy and a potato scallop or three. Doused in salt and vinegar

beebee25 · 05/07/2025 09:57

What is scraps?

Haha sorry, must have had my telephone voice on. 🤣 DH does joke with me that I’m posh even though I’m not really. Grew up in the west end of Glasgow then moved to Arbroath just before my teen years so I’ve got a bit of a mix of an accent but don’t really use much Scottish slang still. My friend who moved here from California is more likely to say “heid” than I am. 🤣

beebee25 · 05/07/2025 09:57

What is scraps?

Bits of batter that have been left in the fryers.

NewDogOwner · 05/07/2025 10:23

Pizza crunch with tonnes of vinegar and salt and a buttered roll. Ketchup on the side for dipping.

I guess I'll have to have a mushy pea sandwich then 😋 🙃, less calories! The one near me fresh in veggie friendly stuff but it's really expensive and mind numbingly slow at getting anything out
