I like the Slade version

Umanresources · 31/12/2025 23:54

Happy New Years Eve everyone. I’m having a very quiet night, apart from the occasional fireworks going off outside. I don’t know why people don’t wait until midnight, especially tonight. It’s been so quiet since the family went back home and I’m missing the boys like crazy.
@EllaDisenchanted The boys are 8 and 10 and they are very caring, loving little chaps. It was so hard to say goodbye to them and the elder ran back in for “just one more hug”.
@MissConductUS I’m so pleased you are back home now and it sounds as though you are making a good recovery. Hope this continues into next year as well.
@mathanxiety i know what you mean about fridge Tetris. We’ve been storing some foodstuffs, well wrapped up, in one of the sheds, because it’s very cold. It dipped below freezing last night. I’m not even sure what food we have left out there.
@MyrtleLion Hope your legs get sorted. I’ve been struggling with swollen legs recently and hate the stretched feeling. I find it difficult to sit with them elevated as it makes my hips ache too much. If it’s not one thing it’s another, grr. I’ve been given some very easy exercises to do for the next couple of weeks, which is supposed to help ease the leg pain.
@Mumtobabyhavoc thank you for this lovely thread, which I enjoy being a part of. I love all the photos you post of places you’ve been and delicious food you have.
Eight minutes to go before the New Year. So Happy New Year to you all as well. 🎉🥰🥂💐❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

ZZTopGuitarSolo · 01/01/2026 01:00

Happy New Year. We are going out in a couple of hours and I’m supposed to be napping so I can stay up till midnight, but I’m wide awake. Which means I’ll be T-I-R-E-D later. Ah well.

MrsSPenguins · 01/01/2026 01:10

Happy New Year. In the end DD stayed with us instead of going to the 2 parties she had been invited to. Nice for us.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 01/01/2026 05:31

Just over 2 1/2 hours to go for us on Canada's west coast. 🥳
I took the dc to the Capilano Suspension Bridge along with half the city and the tourists I chatted with. It was stunning though. It's going to be a late night here for us.

Happy new year everyone!

i love those lights @Mumtobabyhavoc , reminds me a little of driving to see the Blackpool illuminations 😍

HildaTablet · 01/01/2026 08:58

Happy New Year to all on the thread!

Mumtobabyhavoc · 01/01/2026 09:38

Just got into bed here. We rang in the new year at midnight, sang along to Auld Lang Syne, danced then did karaoke for a while. Havoc was asleep as soon as head hit pillow. 😂 Baby a little while ago. 😇😇

A very Happy New Year to all.

Keep your eyes on the thread as it will be full soon. I'll start the new one as it gets closer to 1000 and post the link as the final post unless Miss feels up to taking it back. 🩷

Happy New Year to all!

I was exhausted yesterday and spent most of the day napping or reading. The rector of my Episcopal parish stopped by in the morning to visit DH and me and bring me communion, which was lovely.

Today is DH's birthday, and I'm going to try to make him a flourless chocolate cake. The recipe looks simple.

Tomorrow I'm off to see my regular cardiologist, then on Monday, DH and I will take the train into the city for my follow-up exam with the surgeon. I've no idea when my next home nurse visit will be. The incision on my sternum and where they harvest the arteries are still pretty painful, but seem to be getting a bit better every day.

Ooh we live not too far from Blackpool and went several times to the illuminations, when i was younger, although as we didn't have a car, it was either on the train and then tram down the prom, or someone else took us in their car. Blackpool used to be a cheap and cheerful place to go for holidays. Nowadays I think a bit of the cheerfulness had gone, but the other remains!
Happy New Year to all. I finally went to bed at 6 am, for some reason I couldn't sleep.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 01/01/2026 19:03

Just watching the Rose Parade (Pasadena, California) on tv. We had poached eggs and mixed berries for breakfast. I've finished an iced latte and am going to make another. Havoc has vacuumed the couch with the wand vacuum. 😃😇
My mum is puttering in the kitchen - cleaning up breakfast dishes, I think.
It got quite foggy last night and has cleared now. It's still overcast, though and 4c.

Lovely pictures @Mumtobabyhavoc

Hope everyone is having a good NYD and happy birthday to your DH @MissConductUS

Its been a long time since I went to the Blackpool illuminations but used to always join the traffic jam as a child.

We had a nice but quiet NYE with the 4 of us and some lovely canapes, champagne, cinnamon buns and a red velvet cake. Today I've been swimming, did 107 lengths (15m pool) and chatted to one of the regular ladies there and went in steam room and jacuzzi. DH came with me but just deck chaired. Had a lovely mango with yoghurt and some cherries earlier, had a dragon fruit yesterday. Also had some red velvet cake and a cinnamon bun. DS has had 6 cinnamon buns and 1 slice of red velvet cake and 3 apples as well as regular food but still manages to be very thin. We are having steak and red wine pie with new potatoes and cabbage / carrots for dinner.

Happy New Year!

We had a lovely evening, watching Wicked with DH and DSD then the fireworks on the BBC. I used to live near the river before NYE became so commercial. We used to stand in Parliament Square and wait for Big Ben to strike midnight and that was it.

We cracked open some champagne at midnight then some a bottle of red and then I made negronis. DSD went to bed around 12.30am and we stayed up for the Hootenanny and Hits from 1988. It was about 4 am when we went to bed...

I have to go back to the doctor tomorrow for more steroids. The antibiotics I'm still on (two weeks left!) speed up my metabolism so they've not had enough time to work. I am slowly getting better, but I'm still unwell. Hopefully not long until I feel back to my old self.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 02/01/2026 21:59

What a long journey for you, Myrtle. 💐 Glad you had such a nice NYE.

Cannot believe the holidays have come and gone. I've tossed the poinsettias, taken down birthday decos, tidied and cleaned a bit and am eyeing the Christmas tree next.

Now sitting with dc doing some "school." We've watch YT vids on: months of the year, the tongue and the esophagus. We are now onto telling time.
Baby has just untied one of the tiny bows on reindeer ears I struggled to sew a repair on previously. Grrr. Oh, well. Holiday's over anyway....

Weather is decent: temp is up to 8c and it's partially overcast, but clouds are quite high.
I need to return dome storage bins to Costco I just bought as one has a broken handle and get the dc outside.

Really loving your news again @MrsSPenguins- lovely food!
Glad you are on the mend @MissConductUS
Hope you can get over the final hurdle of recovery @MyrtleLion
Been to work today then straight to DS2’s first youth game - he can play up now as he is 16. He didn’t get off the bench unfortunately as a very close game but has been promised a start next week. His own team have a cup game on Sunday but it is cold so I don’t know if the pitch will be frozen. I have promised to provide food so need to try and juggle getting ingredients that can be frozen or will keep in case of cancellation.
currently eating a homemade mince pie with baileys salted caramel cream……😋

Mumtobabyhavoc · 03/01/2026 05:00

You sure are busy with all the cooking you do, Sprouts! How nice you can manage it. It will be a lovely memory for your ds. 🥰

I didn't go to Costco and I wiil likely try and avoid it until Monday now as weekends are just too busy.

I did take the kids back to the Capilano Suspension Bridge. We did the Cliff Walk which we missed last time in addition to walking on the suspension bridge and down the canyon. We walked about 1300m, about half were stairs. There is section at the bottom about wildlife with a screen in the trees projecting various animals. There was similar at the HP Experience with unicorns. Very cool.

The kids have just opened another box of Christmas crackers:

Q. What's the most common Christmas wine?
A. Awww, I hate Brussels sprouts....
(said in a whiny voice)

Q. Why did the turkey join the band?
A. Because it had the drumsticks.

Wah, wah, wah.... 🙄

@Mumtobabyhavoc Love the jokes. 😂 It’s great when the children join in, especially when they start to make up their own ‘unfunny’ jokes. I’m still confused about which day we are up to. My daughter’s friend came round yesterday and we played a couple of games, which was great fun and I thought it was Sunday, as no one was working. Obviously today was Monday, when I woke up and I expected everyone to be going to work. I’ve not even been drinking, I’ve only had 2 Prosecco on NYE, but I’ve not really missed it.

There are only a couple of things that we watch in real time, on Terrestrial TV, Taskmaster and the Traitors; we download things or stream them, so there are few clues as to the correct days. My lovely DD has been out for a frosty walk with some friends, then has come home and has made us a delicious fish pie. I’m a big fish eater, along with my DGS1. I introduced him to another lovely dish as well. He has quite taken to caviar, cream cheese and sour cream on blinis!

Mumtobabyhavoc · 03/01/2026 18:57

Oh, Uman, I haven't had that in ages! It used to be something I bought often (roe, chevre, water crackers or similar). It's a lovely canape, especially with something sparkling. 😋
I agree that it's sometimes easy to lose track of the day/date. I rely on my phone for that. 😵‍💫

We've got a storm here. It's absolutely pouring rain and dark. Temp has gone up to 7c, but we do have a severe weather advisory.
I've got the tv news on about the US attack in Venezuela and capture of Maduro and his wife and that Colombia has sent armed forces in. People are dancing in the streets. Hoping for stability and prosperity for the people there. 🤞

Baileys salted caramel cream - now we're talking, Sprouts.

Gorgeous lights, havoc. The animals on the screen must have been very exciting for the LOs.

I wish one if my grandmothers had introduced me to the joys of caviar, Uman. I had many, many years of catching up to do.

Just back from a lovely facial that one of my DDs got for me for Christmas. I'm feeling very moisturised.

Chicken cacciatore for dinner tonight. DD will pick out the mushrooms.

Hope you're both feeling OK, MissC and Myrtle.

we need the laugh reaction havoc 😂 my boys love that sort of joke 🤦‍♀️
Sprout I always thought mince pies were savoury with minced meat in, until one day DHs work got them in …😅 what sport does your DS play?
Had a lovely visit from DHs nephew and wife and three little kids last night; they’re here from America.
They also brought me a parcel I ordered from a mystery warehouse sale from my favourite stationary company in America, which was very fun to open. I lucked out with some of the products :)
I’ve almost completed my 2025 journal; just need to stick in two photos and write up the trip and then I can crack open my new journal which has been patiently waiting since I ordered it a few months ago. Nothing like starting a crisp new journal!

MrsSPenguins · 04/01/2026 22:48

Homemade mince pie sounds lovely @sproutsandparsnips

What a great gift @mathanxiety

Loving the bear @Mumtobabyhavoc

Just been swimming for a second time this year, beautiful sunny day here but freezing so decided to go swimming, which was nice and chatted to a lady there but a bit busy. Then spent 2.5 hours cleaning downstairs so house is lovely and clean again and free of DSs mud.

We have some stepping stones for the garden arriving on Wednesday and have plans to re-lay part of the garden path though its very weather permitting, snow forecast that day. Have all DSs presents ready for his birthday. He had his cake from the bakers early as they aren't open for his birthday and I asked him and he turned his ipad off to listen as soon as I said the bakeries name so was clear he wanted those cakes. DD is back on Sunday so a week left with her.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 05/01/2026 03:41

Very productive Penguins! What kind of birthday cake?
Ella, I have completely fallen off journaling.
Good for you for filling yours! 🩷

Took the dc to the maritime museum this afternoon. After that I stopped for bagels from Siegel's (still warm, ate 2 in the car) then drove to Jericho for a beach walk. We didn't quite make it to the sand as we got sidetracked up by a fluffle of wild bunnies. 🩷🐰
