Part 2:
The Maritime Museum is surprisingly interesting! The kids's play area is good, as well. The first Sunday of the month is entry by donation.

Thanks @Mumtobabyhavoc DS has already had a red velvet birthday cake and we had bake in oven cinnamon buns so just to balance his cakes we will do pear and chocolate.

We woke up to snow here, it's beautiful seeing all the thatched roofs and gardens with snow, only about an inch. Wasn't predicted until later in the week.

sproutsandparsnips · 05/01/2026 22:04

@EllaDisenchantedit is quite a misleading name! DSs both play rugby. DS2 is very keen, DS1 prefers the, ahem, social side!
@MrsSPenguinshope DS had a great birthday. We have a similar museum close by and it was also surprisingly interesting!
@mathanxietya facial sounds lovely. The Baileys salted caramel cream was delicious.
very icy here. DS school closed today. Meant to be warmer tomorrow.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 06/01/2026 03:37

Spent a couple hours at the beach today in W Van. It was so nice! Now it's cloudy, temp has dropped and rain/snow is in the forecast for tonight and the rest of the week. Stopped at Costco on the way home just in case it gets ugly on the roads.

Stunning photos again @Mumtobabyhavoc . I’m sure I must have been either a sailor, pirate or mermaid in a former life, as I love being by the sea, or in a pool. Perhaps it’s because I’m buoyant in the water 😂. I’m not a good swimmer though. When my children were young we used to go and stay with family in Cambridge. They lived in a terraced house, but they had a pool at the bottom of the garden. It wasn’t very deep and I used to walk on tiptoe, reading a book in the pool, while the children swam round me. I loved it.

@MrsSPenguins We have a set of drawers arriving on Wednesday. It must be a good day for DIY. When I got my stairlift fitted I had to get rid of a shoe/bag/vacuum cupboard with storage boxes inside. We culled the boxes from 4 to 2, but I dislike them sitting in the hallway cluttering up the place. Hopefully the new drawers will help to tidy it up. I do like a good tidy!

We are having a supermarket delivery today, the first one since before Christmas. On Friday we are having a meat delivery and I trying some different cuts of meat, after reading about them online. I’ve been influenced once again by Masterchef and ordered some bone marrow, mutton chops, and a cotechino sausage, which I’d never heard of before, but there are a couple of recipes included which sound delicious.

I’ve kept myself busy making yet more bookmarks. I’m going to have to let friends leave them in libraries, bookshops and give to other people. I’ve made over 100 np0
Got waylaid, so had supermarket delivery, plus 2 other parcels. DD asked if we could do a crossword together, which meant she reads the clues and I answer them, OH joins in, but he is dyslexic and can’t spell, so we have such a laugh trying to fit his words into the grid. He finds it funny too, we’re not just mocking him.

It’s my DS birthday today, he was my little Epiphany. It’s a good job I was already in the hospital because he was born just over an hour after I went into labour and it took an hour and a half to get to the hospital from our home. My OH missed the birth completely. DS and family will be having a video call later tonight. They are going downtown to look at the lights in the square in Lisbon, so we will have a great view with them.

We had snow yesterday, with a low temperature of -7°C. Very chilly indeed. Today the snow has gone thank goodness.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 07/01/2026 03:30

I love swimming, too Uman. And what a story about your son's birth! 🩷

It was chilly and wet today when I took dc out. The rain had stopped , but ofc the playground was wet. Had the kids in full rain gear.
Havoc was sitting in a puddle at one point having slipped off a rock that needed to be climbed. There were a couple of abandoned and somewhat soft soccer balls lying around so we played kicking those a bit. The sun poked out for sunset. It's about 4c now at 7:30pm.

Thank you for your kind words, everyone.

I had a kidney scan on Monday because my genetic condition that causes lymphoedema can cause structural damage in kidneys. It revealed I only have one kidney, which was a huge shock. I'm fine and plenty of people live with only one kidney. My single kidney is very healthy, so I'll wait for the follow up to see if anything more is required.

I stayed in London on Monday evening and saw Othello at the Theatre Royal, Haymarket, starring David Harewood and Toby Jones. It was excellent.

I also drove my new electric car to 8% on getting it home. It was using more power because it's been so cold. It was a bit hairy, but I had 20 miles left on the charge when I finally got home.

Having a lazy day today as my feet are very sore from a lot of walking over the last two days.

MissConductUS · 07/01/2026 14:27

Hi all, just thought I'd pop in to give you an update on how I'm doing.

We took the train into the city on Monday for my first post op exam with the surgeon. They took chest X-rays, and he examined my incisions, listened to my heart and breathing, etc. All good. He said I'm recovering very well and should start cardiac rehab in a few weeks. I can get that locally, and my regular cardiologist will manage it.

I'm still a bit fatigued and having some pain in my lower right leg where they harvested the artery, but the edema and bruising are improving.

It's been cold here, with snow on and off. The picture is of the Hudson River, from the train on Monday. It's partly frozen over, which doesn't usually happen this early in winter.

Sending good wishes to both @MyrtleLion and @MissConductUS.

Myrtle - oh heavens, what a shock that must have given you 😲 You’ve been through so much, but you seem very calm about it so hopefully it is indeed not a major issue, but life does bowl curve-balls sometimes, doesn’t it?

MissC, glad to hear your recovery’s going well and all is heading in the right direction.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 07/01/2026 15:04

Myrtle, do you mean one functioning kidney or anatomically just one present in your body? 🤔
Miss, happy to see you here and inow your appt went well.

Very little sleep here.

Umanresources · 07/01/2026 17:38

@Mumtobabyhavoc Hope you manage to catch up on your sleep.

@MyrtleLion wow. That must have been a shock for you, re your kidney. I hope you don’t suffer because of it. You do seem to have had some awful health problems, but I hope you are now on an upward path. Othello is one of my favourite Shakespeare plays, I studied it for my Literature ‘A’ level. The version I saw had the opera singer Willard White in the title role and oh my goodness he was fantastic with that fabulous voice.

@MissConductUS thanks for the update, it’s still quite early days in your recovery. Does the cardiac recovery mean physiotherapy?

This afternoon, totally out of the blue, I got a migraine, but it was one without pain, just zig zag vision. It must be about 15 years since I had one of those and I have no idea what caused it. I’ve only had about 5 of the distorted vision ones before. When I was younger I used to have really bad very painful migraines on one side of my head. I could only get rid of it by lying in a darkened room and sleeping it off. Touch wood, I won’t be getting those any more.

DD is off to Lisbon for a few days to stay worth my DS and the family. We video chatted last night but haven’t mentioned her visit, so it will be a surprise for them. We have arranged for another video chat tomorrow as well.

DD has made the third consecutive meal for us tonight. It is ‘lobby’, which is what I was craving since DG2 said that they had had it yesterday, their dad does most of the cooking and he is very eclectic in his taste, Lancashire dishes, as well as Portuguese, Chinese and Indian cuisine. I love it when he comes here and takes over the kitchen!

One kidney present in my body. When she scanned the place where my left kidney should be, she couldn't find it.

Ironically as she was examining my right kidney she asked why I was having the scan as everything was very healthy. I explained about the potential for structural issues and she was as surprised as I was when she looked for my left kidney and it simply wasn't there.

I feel fine and many people live well with one kidney. It was a huge shock.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 07/01/2026 19:05

Wow, Myrtle. Astounding you are just finding this out now.
Food and cooking sounds lovely Uman.

Have just finished breakfast and had an iced latte and banana bread with choc chips and pecans. Kids had cheddar, grapes, banana and toasted challah with PB.
Have re-washed and hung up rain gear I forgot in the washer last night. 🙄🤦‍♀️
Need to vacuum and tidy up.
Raining and 4c here.

Gosh, that is a surprise! It's good to know your single kidney is healthy.

I also only have one kidney. IME, GPs don't really understand how to support people with one kidney (eg they misread kidney test results, and panic patients by telling them they have kidney disease when in fact they do not), so if you do have questions you get much better answers from a nephrologist. But it sounds like your kidney is doing just fine.

Were you also born with just one? Apparently modern ultrasound techniques would have shown I only had one when I was in utero, but I was born before such magic trickery was invented.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 08/01/2026 22:21

Just puttering here today. Was awake around 4am, so put laundry on, folded and put away other clothes, scrolled, made decaf. ... baby up at 6:00 or so and Havoc shortly after. Breakfast given and I went back to sleep for a bit. Now, have taken tree down and put decos away. Have made a banana bread with oats and choc chips. DC are just finishing lunch.

Up earlyish and our of the house by 10. Hairdressers at 11.30 and the new colour in my hair hides my grey so successfully I can now wait 8-10 weeks between appointments.

Applied for another job this afternoon then watched trashy TV.

DH made shredded Brussels sprouts with lardons which has been a game changer. I hate sprouts, but, like many things, smother it in plenty of pork fat and it tastes delicious. We had it with the last of the beef we had over Christmas. Back to chicken and roast vegetables from tomorrow.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 10/01/2026 18:21

Good morning. 🩷
Feeling quite meh as coming down with a cold, so tired, sneezy, sinuses blegh. 🤧
Did a bit of puttering getting a load of laundry on and running dishwasher. Nothing too exciting. Made oatmeal for the dc's breakfast and added butter, cinnamon, blueberries, blackberries and banana. I had an iced latte and a slice of banana bread I warmed in the oven then put a bit of butter on it.
I took the kids sledding yesterday afternoon. It was very foggy. Nice sunset as we drove home though. Took pic as we went over the bridge. It's grey, rainy and 6c here.

I donated one a few years ago - a very close friend was in kidney failure, so he now has three kidneys and I have one 😀

I don’t miss it, and I live my life pretty much exactly as I did when I had two kidneys.

mathanxiety · 10/01/2026 19:30

That was incredibly selfless of you ZZ. Wishing you continued good health.

Myrtle - will the news change your treatment at all? Ignore if too personal a question.

MissC I hope you're continuing to take it easy. It sounds as if your recovery is going well. The frozen Hudson looks so different from summer images I have in my head. I've been watching the Ken Burns documentary on the American Revolution, and your photo is a reminder of the poor winter conditions the combatants endured.

havoc get well soon!

I lopped a few inches off my hair as it was getting very frizzy at the back where there was contact with my coat collar and scarf. It feels much healthier now, and I'm ready for whatever the next three months of winter throws at me.

The tree is down, decorations put away, sitting room cleared of pine needles as much as possible, and the fridge is cleared of Christmas leftovers apart from a forgotten wodge of pecan pie that will be eaten tonight. We had spaghetti and meatballs last night, very much a departure from seasonal fare.

Thank you. I'm impressed that you're a donor. I have considered it before but never got round to it. I imagine I would have found out at that point. 😂

I have no idea what it means for my treatment. I will probably see my lymphoedema consultant in a few weeks and I expect she'll refer me to a renal specialist for checks. Hopefully that will be at my local hospital and not in London.

As I've lived successfully with just one kidney, I don't think much will change. Though I might be encouraged to drink more water. I have a tendency to not drink sufficiently.

I'm amazed you cut your own hair. I would always go to a hairdresser.
