I can’t believe I’m not seeing more threads on this. Starmer back israel against Iran. Other Muslim countries are supporting Iran.

As someone who knows absolutely ZERO about the Israel/Palestine conflict and what caused it, it’s all quite baffling and very hard to follow. I missed the beginning and do not have a clue what the history is/was/why they’re fighting, none of it and googling has me none the wiser

You could also ask ChatGPT to explain it to you in simple terms.

Israel might just have prevented WW3 if they’ve taken out Iran’s nuclear weapon capability.

But Israel also has nuclear weapons, that it should not have ...

Ignorance is bliss I suppose…..keep on trying to justify…after all they are all subhuman anyway right? It’s great you are showing us who you really are…..

This thread is actually about Israel’s attack on Iran, and Irans threat to retaliate. It isn’t about the Palestinian/Israel situation. You’re projecting. Do you really think Iran care about the Palestinians? That they’re doing this for the Palestinians? They will bomb Israel, and won’t care that the attack will probably also wipe out many Palestinian people. To Iran it will just be collateral damage. Iran treat their own people abysmally, so aren’t going to give a toss about the people in Gaza.

PyongyangKipperbang · 15/06/2025 00:14

No. Why?

Because I think a lot of people on here now were born in the 90's so have no experience of this sort of situation.

I was born in the 70's.

Cold war, Iraq/Iran, The Troubles, The Falklands, etc. Then in the 90's Operation Desert Storm, war against terror etc. Having a long period of relative peace has actually been unusual to every previous generation than the current ones.

My great Grandmother was born in 1898 and died in the late 60's. She lived through two world wars, the Cuban missile crisis, the Korean war, the Spanish civil war..... She would be raisng her eyebrows in no small way at the panic being shown now.

Yeah, but America is very different now. Even though there were conflicts in the 1980s, the post WW2 period is considered to have been the most peaceful stretch is a very long time. And part of that was the influence of the US leadership back then.
However, with the ascendancy of Trump, the world order has significantly changed and strongmen everywhere are throwing their weight around and there is a “too bad, so sad” attitude toward those who don’t “hold the cards”. The old collaborative ally networks no longer hold, unless the benefit is greatly to America.

I am not saying there will be nuclear war, in fact I think conventional war is more likely. But I think our comfortable, consumerist lives are now on notice.

I don’t think it’s WW3. But I do think it’s more concerning than most people (on here and in general) think it is.

How so?
genuine question?

Letstheriveranswer · 15/06/2025 00:32

TriesNotToBeCynical · 14/06/2025 23:28

Anyway Iran haven't got nuclear weapons. The story Israel tells is of preventing them getting nuclear weapons, not that they have them. And Iran agreed not to develop nuclear weapons and have detailed UN inspections of their nuclear power programme but Trump broke that agreement in 2018.

Really? Why so relaxed?

because people always saying its gonna be the next world war, and lets be honest id only consider it ww3 when major powers are launching their nukes, until then these seem low level conflicts

That’s good to know. Thanks.

Im hoping more than anything that I look back at this thread and can feel silly.

Yes you are been silly.

Are you a bot? Or a real person? You keep fear mongering with no real evidence!

But it could be said people need to do their own thinking and practice using their brains, if people want to panic over everything shouldn't they be working on that?

Theshsmpoo · 15/06/2025 00:36

No but I swear some of you are frothing for world war 3.

Considered by whom? And how long is your "post war period" exactly?

I would suggest that the people of Korea, China, Japan, Spain, N.Ireland, East Germany et al would disagree.

OfficerChurlish · 15/06/2025 00:36

Starmer also can't let Khamenei preemptively state that the UK cannot protect its interests abroad as the government sees fit; that would be colossally stupid.

Hey, ignore the sarcasm on here. I suspect they do it to make themselves feel better because for many it’s easiest to ridicule these worries then actually worry.

I too am very anxious about it all. My husband however isn’t and he’s very good at just setting some of facts straight for me on things and helping me see what’s a scary headline vs what’s a realistic scenario.

That being said the reality is none of us truly know, not even the sarcastic commenters. So perhaps choose your news sources well (don’t read the Daily Mail) and educate yourself through conversations that neither scare nor ridicule you, but instead just discuss the facts you have with some rationale. Thats my approach.

Take care of yourself x

This is good advice

Will it affect me me me

JemimaTiggywinkles · 15/06/2025 00:42

Not ww3. Israel have set back the Iranian regime. Actual Iranians seem pleased that their oppressors are being killed. This might instead be the liberation of Iran (and particularly women and gay people in that country).

Course it will. I'm sure Iranians have been praying to be bombed. After all, we know how forensic Israel is when taking out targets; 55k and counting. Oopsie!

Blinkingbother · 15/06/2025 00:46

It’s possible but really unlikely! If ww3 really does break out most likely there’s bugger all you can personally do to change it so i’d just do your best to keep your stiff upper lip, keep calm & carry on!

JemimaTiggywinkles · 15/06/2025 00:47

The strikes in Iran have been surgical - hence lots of people using them to argue the devastation in Gaza is deliberate. Israel has not been bombing indiscriminately, nor has it been targeting civilians. Unlike Iran’s counter-attack.

Surgicalish. Nearly 100 civilians killed and 300 injured.

AutumnArrow · 15/06/2025 00:56

The main problems with nuclear weapons are, first, the very very big bang that removes an entire city from the map in an instant, and second, all the particulates that get swept up into the atmosphere, especially if there were to be a lot of them going off. (The one upside of a nuclear winter is that it would handily reverse global warming.) To that you can add the utter chaos to any society caused by the loss of a big city.

Radiation is very much a minor problem compared to that. In fact we are overly worried about ionising radiation in general as a risk. Only about 50 people died as a result of Chernobyl (official WHO figures), and I think I'm right in saying that nobody died of radiation as a result of Fukushima (versus 20,000 who were killed by the tsunami). Most of our attitude to radiation is still governed by the risk appraisals of the 1930s to 1950s, when we discovered that drinking radium wasn't in fact good for you.

This is not to say that you shouldn't try to avoid ionising radiation as much as possible, of course you should, but going for an X-ray is about the same risk as driving a mile without a seatbelt on, and a single nuclear bomb on Tel Aviv or Kyiv would kill hundreds of thousands in the blast and probably only a few hundred due to fallout.

Edited

That's very reassuring. I had images of horrific radiation thousands of miles around - which I guess is from the past understanding like you said

Do you care about the people in Israel who have been bombed for years? Got any flippant comments for them as well?

TooBigForMyBoots · 15/06/2025 00:59

Israel and Iran are shooting at eachother. They were shooting at eachother a wee while back. They stopped for a bit. They're back at it now.

It's not WWIII.
