I’ve spent the past couple of days reading/watching the media/influencers/tattle and realised there is fault on all sides.
I only followed a few of the influencer threads previously and tended to dip in and out if they crossed my mind. I only remember one instance of a Rightmove posting but it had been taken down promptly. Some ‘social services should be called’ but no one saying they’d actually do it. Reposts of kids photos (from the instagram posts) scribbled out to highlight rather than disseminate identifying information. Certainly no death threats. There looks to have been some tattle postings that have gone beyond what I would reasonably consider to be social commentary aka bitching. I’ve always taken the nothing goes off tattle and into real life at face value though I possibly see that from the perspective that I wouldn’t say anything my grandma would be shocked to hear anyway.
There have been some excruciatingly embarrassing instagram posts highlighting said bitching and driving more people to tattle to see WTF it’s all about. There seems to be a lot of ‘they’ posts being made (including on here - sorry about your experiences @Roobarbtwo) conflating tattle posts and other stalking that may or may not be by tattle members. Actual stalking should be taken more seriously by the police. Tattlers are no more guilty by association than instagram followers. Also tales of anyone not agreeing with instagrammers of being accused of being tattlers and the dogs being let loose on them on instagram. Many many influencers I’ve never ever heard of jumping on any kind of bandwagon they can to get more views.
The media have also been highlighting bitchy posts - eek at some of those! I bet Clemmie Hooper just wants to hide everytime tattle is in the mainstream press. I think it was The Guardian commentators who thought The Guardian were being mean about a trans man rather than the TL expose. DM have clearly always had tattlers in their ranks and you can certainly see some sock puppets in the DM comments. The Irish paper that detailed the search for the owner was a great piece and I’m hoping for a Netflix doc on it. I have a little bit of a thread to pull on that at some point…
The doxxing of tattlers by iamelliegrey (and then reposted by others) doesn’t sit right with me as there is too much scope for getting the wrong person entirely. Sending emails to a persons employer on the back of it too! My lips pursed at that. I fear the reposting will get some people into hot water.
No one is smelling of roses with all the muck slinging and I will be taking time reassessing who I follow/read/where I post.
