Anyone else appalled and shocked at Dawn French's social media video mocking the reaction to the terror attack in Israel on Oct 6th. What on earth was she thinking ? She comes across as horrible and lacking in any empathy. I feel sorry for the innocent people on both sides of this war, in Palestine and in Israel.

I thought she was saying no to what The Israeli government is doing in Gaza and the West Bank. She is pointing out that there is no excuse for what they are doing?

LittlePearl · 07/06/2025 09:09

It’s awful. I have always liked her but she has gone down in my estimation - massively . Such a terrible error of judgement, she must have rehearsed it and spent time setting up the recording - why did she not stop and think?

What is happening in Gaza is horrific but any commentary on this needs wisdom, compassion and care. She’s demonstrated none of the above.

EleanorReally · 07/06/2025 09:15

she will be cancelled
no need to boycott M & S although they have made it easier with their online issues.
M& S will cancel her

I quite honestly just don't understand the politics of it all - a few very intelligent people have tried but I just don't get it. What I do get is 10's of thousands of innocent people being killed and living in horrendous conditions and then the like of DF essentially taking the piss out of them all.

Absolutely. It’s so complicated. I mean it started in the 1800s and there has been so much inhumane behaviour it hard to know what a peaceful solution would look like at this stage.

This was my take also, she has being using this style for a while although appreciate not everyone's cup of tea. I thought she was saying it doesn't matter how horrific what was done, it is not a good enough excuse to do what you are doing in response. (Mumble mumble bad things mumble mumble No!)
Terry Pratchett said it well when he said something along the lines of 'remember the atrocity which was committed against us to vindicate the atrocity we are committing today'

NoBiscuitsLeftInMyTin · 07/06/2025 09:03

Shocking - is she still advertising M+S etc? I think they should all be boycotted because of her (although I do like M and S food!)

I think, as a Jewish company originally, they might want to rethink their advertising policy

Especially as, on a normal day, she is crass and unfunny anyway

She's been offensive in the past, one of her books was littered with the word 'mong.' I chose not to read anything of hers again. Of all the insults she could've chosen, she chose that, says a lot really.

That’s appalling, I didn’t know that about her. What a horrible person she is.

Wholeheartedly agree
The legacy of Corbyn et al was to sanitise and legitimise antisemitism by using faux humanitarian sentiments to do so. There has been a palpable increase in antisemitism , just casually introduced in SM, conversation as if it’s a legitimate observation

But any criticism of Israel is labelled as antisemitic by the Israeli government. See recently Macron being accused by the Israeli foreign minister of “a crusade against the Jewish State”.

On the one hand people are correctly reminded told not to conflate Jewish people and Israel - yet on the other hand the Israeli government does just that at every opportunity to try to deflect all legitimate criticism. In the eyes of this extreme right wing Israeli government if you are Jewish and you criticise Israel in any way you’re basically a traitor.

I’ve never liked Dawn French or found her funny. Love Jennifer Saunders though so always thought I must be missing something if she could put up with her.

Same here plus I have heard ( from someone in the business) that Dawn is very difficult to work with.
She needs to apologise.

AmusedOpalShaker · 07/06/2025 09:22

Utterly vile. Vile, vile, vile.

leaderZ · 07/06/2025 09:23

Always wondered what really happened with her adoptive daughter, Billie , too - now in jail I think?

she always had no empathy talking about her in the press very odd. Then wrote a hideous book criticising her and basically saying she didn’t love her (from memory) around 2010-2015 ish?

wondered at the time if she was a sociopath. Just such a cruel thing to do!

Some Jewish people disagree with what their government are doing too. It's not a black or white issue. There's no need to "cancel" someone who you disagree with, that's a slippery slope to censorship and the end of free speech

Christwosheds · 07/06/2025 09:29

HermioneWeasley · 07/06/2025 08:46

It’s absolutely appalling. What happened in October 7th was the worst killing of Jews in a day since the holocaust. And the violence and terror were utterly depraved. To talk about it like that….I’m speechless

Agree with this.

anotherside · 07/06/2025 09:31

The video was immature and silly and I agree also very distasteful in making light of the Oct 7th attack. However I was expecting something more extreme. I mean Israel is commiting genocide. It’s using starvation against babies and children as a weapon of war. Its actions have been condemned even by most of its Western allies in the strongest terms possible. So I’m not sure a silly distasteful short by a has been comedian is my biggest moral concern about the genocide occurring right now.

RiffRaffBananas · 07/06/2025 09:32

Michael Marks, one of the founders of Marks & Spencer, was Jewish. You’d think she would have done some research.

WantingMoreCareer · 07/06/2025 09:37

I watched it before I knew about this thread and I took it to be her usual mumbling style skit -
although she clearly says at the beginning “complicated and nuanced” but basically NO to the atrocities. To me it was a recognition of both “sides” feeling they have rights over the other but just NO to all the horrificness.
I didn’t feel it was making light of anything although of course delivered in her Instagram style she does, the message was simply it’s complicated but it’s awful and must stop.

beefandblackbeans · 07/06/2025 09:37

TheyreLikeUsButRichAndThin · 07/06/2025 07:57

She’s been completely unfunny for the last few years IMO. This is obviously next level!

I’ve just had a look at a few of her videos. You are so right. Most of her videos are ridiculous and unfunny witterings. She’s definitely not funny and I agree hasn’t been for many years.

DeSoleil · 07/06/2025 09:38

Dawn French's X post is insufferably self-sufficient.

Arguably the most fatuous and condescending thing I have ever seen. Her demeanour and tone is that of a schoolteacher or disapproving mother.

Yes, they did a bad thing (Oct.7th Hamas slaughter) but,no she says i.e. stop it naughty children. Stop being unpleasant to the beastly people. She goes on to exclaim,"Really?..no.' She says,'not complicated...NUANCED'.

The silly cow. It couldn't be more complicated. What a load of self-indulgent virtue-signalling pig ignorant drivel.

Moreover, it is oh so very easy to express horror and revulsion at the suffering of people in war. Who amongst us does not possess that instinctive human compassion for the children in any war wherever it may be?

People like her seem to think they have somehow been bestowed with morals that others do not have.

Also,if you're going to poke your head above the parapet at least have something to say. Something insightful, profound, educated, informed, detailed or analytical not merely 'no,really?'

Figcherry · 07/06/2025 09:39

She’s completely minimised the October 7th massacre.
And it’s only a week since she posted about Alan Yentob being a top guy, obviously the right sort of Jew.

Yes that’s what she was saying. But she made her point very distastefully in my opinion. But you do wonder about how some people will leap to their keyboard over distasteful comments, meanwhile Israel purposely blocks aid to starving babies and children. The Israeli government is commiting an ongoing atrocity in Gaza which in recent months has even its staunch Western allies reaching for the sick bucket. So yes normal people will express their feelings on that and unfortunately not all of that comment will be peasant or joined up/logical/productive.

ScribblingPixie · 07/06/2025 09:42

Repellant. And it seems from her single response on X that she can't see any problem with it, so it must be a true reflection of who she is and what's going on in her brain. I'll be avoiding her in future for sure.

ThymeSageRosemary · 07/06/2025 09:42

She lives in a bubble where you get social brownie points for this sort of thing.

That’s exactly how I interpreted it.

She is saying “No” - nothing justifies what is going on in Gaza right now.

TwistedWonder · 07/06/2025 09:45

I’ve never liked her tbh. This is appalling and so fucking disrespectful minimising one of the worst terrorist atrocities in recent Beverly as ‘a bad thing’

And rather than saying sorry I got this wrong, she’s doubling down and defending herself against critics includingTracy-Ann Oberman, who as a Jewish woman is rightly appalled.

StMarie4me · 07/06/2025 09:46

Definitely not AI?
