Is your mind ever blown from realising who actors are in other things?

I am rewatching Orange is the New Black currently. Taslitz is one of my favourite characters and over a decade later I now learn that she's the lead role in Dead Silence (one of my favourite films).
I was the same when I realised Kirsten Dunst is the little girl vampire in 'Interview with the Vampire'.

In the Tale Spinners children’s stories from the 1960s, some characters are played by Robert Hardy (minister of magic in Harry Potter), with his distinctive voice.

Deano from Gavin and Stacey is Thomas the poet in ghosts. Matthew Baynton, I believe he's been in a lot of things.

And recently, Brian from spaced was Jim from Friday Night Dinner. Forget his name but he's in his 60s now which I also can't get my head around.

Horrible Histories. In the current series of Taskmaster on C4 too.

Oh, what about Stanley Tucci as the murderer in Lovely Bones 🤓
Mind blowing!

That is weird. For ages I misremembered the murderer being played by another American actor David Strathairn (probably spelt wrong).
Stanley Tucci seems too cheery for that part.

I think Lee Ingleby has incredible range:
He's the sidekick in George Gently, the voice of Bob the Builder, Stan Shunpike in The Prisoner of Azkhaban and Sam Tyler's dad in Life on Mars amongst other things.
I saw him a few years back being a really evil so and so, but I can't remember the name of the series. When I realised it was the guy from George Gently my head nearly exploded!

Wire in the blood?

This has to be my favourite thread of the year

I love Lee Ingleby. Brilliant actor!

Not the same thing, but I managed to watch about 3/4 of Noturnal Animals before realising (only because DH told me), that Isla Fisher and Amy Adams were different actresses. I struggled with the plot because of this, they look the same to me.

Batmannequin · 04/06/2025 22:03

I was blown away realising Billy Bob Thornton played the lead character is Slingblade. He's virtually unreasonable.

You mean your mind is blown by realising that actors can actually act?
Surely that's what their job is - morphing into different characters in differentl genres?

No not that-more so that I hadn't realised.

I remember being “wait, whaaaaattt?!?” when my flatmate pointed out that Begbie in Trainspotting was the same actor who played Hamish Macbeth!

Slightly more contemporary I also didn’t twig for a few episodes that Leo Woodall in One Day was Jack in Thr White Lotus 🫠

Robert Carlyle is an amazing actor IMHO (and it IS humble as I am not a huge TV watcher and have only seen a good handful of films).I loved his character in The Full Monty too.

You might have a touch of “face blindness”. It’s a real thing and people can have it to different degrees. Brad Pitt has it apparently.

I do have difficulty recognising people 'Out of Context'. So you may be on to something there-there is a word for it?I forget.

But say, I see a friend for a glass of wine on a Friday night-but then I bump into them in a supermarket-it takes me a good few seconds to realise who they are. I forget names-to-faces a lot-even people I've known a long time. Or get quite similar-looking people confused with one another. I am sure It's quite common, but still not 'normal'.

No, more recent than that. I might have a rummage on his IMDb page and see if I can find it - it’s bugging me now

RubieChewsDay · 04/06/2025 22:17

Perpetua in Bridget Jones' Diary (it's her annoying colleague) is also Alan Partridge's PA Lynn!!

I once bumped into this bloke. He said Hi, seems to know me, talks to my daughter like he knows her too. We have a conversation, me wracking my brains the entire time, trying to work out who he is while faking that of course I know him. I recognise him, but fuck knows where from. Eventually come to the conclusion he's a friend of my brother's. We say our goodbyes and as I walk off I say to 6yo DD, "Did you know who that was?". To which she looks at me stupid, and says "Of course, it's Dan!". "Dan?". "Dan! Bampi's Dan!"

Yep, I have just blanked my fucking step brother. Now, in fairness to me, my Mum married my stepdad when I was an adult, so I never lived with him. And also in my defence, I didn't know he was back from travelling in Australia, so wasn't expecting to see him. But still, I've spend Christmases with this guy, I've been to Center Parcs with this guy. He's babysat my kid, and I've looked after him when he was 17 and drunker than any 17yo should ever be. And yet, in that moment, I didn't know him from Adam.

10 years later he's still not let me forget it.

Robert Sean Leonard played Neil Perrin Dead Poets Society and Dr James Wilson in House

MrsSunshine2b · 04/06/2025 22:27

Only recently clicked that Josh Hutcherson aka Peeta was also the kid in Bridge to Terabithia.

LittleTwiggy · 04/06/2025 22:47

I’ve watched Jumanji multiple times since a kid but it was only as an adult I realised that the actor that plays the dad also plays the hunter that chases them around throughout the film.

Uptightmum · 04/06/2025 23:17

Mae Whitman who is in good girls is the presidents daughter in Independence Day 🤯

Tooty78 · 04/06/2025 23:27

Miriam Margolyes was the sexy voice of the rabbit in the Cadburys Caramel ad in the 80s.

Jeanette Goldsyein played private Vasques in Aliens and Teminaator 2 she played Janelle.
No way would you think they were played by 5he same person.

Most of the posts on this thread are obvious to me (how can you not recognise Mark Heap in things?!) but this one is always a corker. I would never have twigged this before someone pointed it out.

My friend couldn't recognise Veronica Mars's dad in Galaxy Quest despite having watched him in hundreds of episodes of veronica mars!

I couldn’t believe that Joseph Lawrence in handmaids tail is the boyfriend in adventures of babysitting, and Mike in breaking bad is the bad guy in Beverlyhills cop

Joseph Lawrence is Bradley Whitford, who also played Josh Lyman in the West Wing and Danny Tripp in Studio 60.

Katey Segal is my favourite for this. How can she be the mum out of Married with Children, and the voice of Leela in Futurama and Gemma in Sons of Anarchy?

Also, someone mentioned above, Rosa in Brooklyn nine nine and Mirabel in Encanto both played by Stephanie Beatriz 🤯

And Matthew Rhys in the Americans and Brothers & Sisters. Took me ages to click it's the same guy.

She is also the mum in 8 Simple Rules with Kaley Cuoco (Penny) from Big Bang Theory, Katey made a guest appearance in BBT as Penny’s mum.

NeedANapAgain · 05/06/2025 02:16

Binge watching “Cracker” and thought Fitz’s son looked a little familiar. I was not expecting him to be Jamie Tartt’s dad from “Ted Lasso” (Kieran O’Brien).
