Is your mind ever blown from realising who actors are in other things?

I am rewatching Orange is the New Black currently. Taslitz is one of my favourite characters and over a decade later I now learn that she's the lead role in Dead Silence (one of my favourite films).
I was the same when I realised Kirsten Dunst is the little girl vampire in 'Interview with the Vampire'.

One for Alan Partridge fans...the actor who plays Michael the Geordie is also the voice of Captain Barnacles in Octonauts.

That's a great one!

Not quite the same but I rewatched, "Drop the dead donkey" recently and in one episode there was Daniel Craig.

Hugh Laurie wasn't in monty python, I'm not sure who you are thinking of

Edited

You're correct sorry...I meant Blackadder- was thinking about John Cleese and got it all in a muddle in my perimenopause brain. Thank you for the correction

Coffeeishot · 07/06/2025 08:38

You mean your mind is blown by realising that actors can actually act?
Surely that's what their job is - morphing into different characters in differentl genres?

I was reading this and thinking “I don’t get it, why is it mind blowing that an actor can play different roles throughout their career…surely that’s the bloody point!!”🫤

I was watching an old episode of Doc Martin and thought I vaguely recognised the receptionist. It turned out about three weeks later Blush that it was Amanda from Motherland.

Oh.my.god....I love both Motherland and Doc Martin and have never before twigged that Lucy Punch played the original doctor's receptionist!!!! Thanks so much for blowing my mind!

I only twigged this week whilst watching an old Goggle Box that Anna Maxwell Martin from motherland was Carmichael from Line of Duty.

I also find it hard to believe that the lovely gentle Michael from Mum is also the nasty drug dealing "Mother Superior" in the original Trainspotting.

ScraptionoftheCost · 07/06/2025 10:00

Have you see Fat Baws, @mum2jakie ?

😁 I love this actor, because every time he turns up, you get to shout "SOUND THE OCTO-ALERT VWOOP VWOOP" and it very much livens up whatever you happen to be watching

I did watch the whole of Being John Malkovitch thinking how refreshing it was that they’d cast such a relatively normal looking woman in a lead role, only to see it was Cameron Diaz.

Yes! That was surely on purpose, though. They cast the two leads completely against type - Diaz as a charmless frump and John Cusack as a selfish dick rather than his usual puppy-eyed indie sap. Such a good film!

InfoSecInTheCity · 07/06/2025 11:01

Pedro Pascal in Buffy the Vampire slayer made me do a shocked face, he looks very different now!

It's more when the actor becomes so beloved/ ingrained with a character in the viewer's mind that they don't realise it's the same person playing a different personality.

Benedict Wong is one of my favourites for this - although I always recognise him, I found it amusing that poor Errol from Sean Lock's sitcom popped up in various roles like in The Martian, Prometheus, and in tons of Marvel movies.

zaxxon · 07/06/2025 11:52

Recently I watched Yesterday (the Danny Boyle film) and was totally flummoxed as to who it was playing the older John Lennon. Looked it up after and blow me if it wasn't Robert Carlyle!

I've seen him in a million things (including The Beach just last week), you'd think I'd be able to spot him by now

Init4thecatz · 07/06/2025 18:54

Oh I got one.

The guy in Love Actually (Karl) who was interested in the woman (Sarah) who never got off her phone (caring for her sick brother)

...and Xerxes, the bald, golden ruler of the Persian army in 300.

HobnobsChoice · 07/06/2025 19:24

That before he was a drug making ex Chemistry Teacher, Bryan Cranston was the hapless dad in Malcolm in the Middle.

Before being a bit of a drip dad in Motherland Kevin (Paul Ready) was part of an evil conspiracy and tortured people in Utopia.

Michael Smiley after working as a courier and spending his weekends raving (Tyres in Spaced) became a church going bachelor in Bad Sisters (and aunt Petunia is his sister!).

The Waif in Game of Thrones is the Northern mum in Ten Pound Poms. I love Faye Marsay

@ecuse @BusySittingDown I have found him sexy as hell in every role!

Me too, love Dan Stevens. Never watched Downton though!

He's in a marvel series called Legion, I couldn't get into it but have carried on watching it with DH anyway just cos he's in it 😁

Also have you seen the film where he is a robot, think it's a french film

Iknownothing · 07/06/2025 20:18

Oh my favourite mind blown moment is Donnie Wahlberg of new kids on the block boy band fame plays Vincent the intruder/druggie in the sixth sense.
honestly unrecognisable
