Inspired by the Sweets you used to hate as a child thread, I thought I’d start one about the sweets I loved as a child (and probably still love too).

Chocolate cigarettes - they has edible paper round them and came in a pack that looked like a real cigarette packet.

Anything coffee flavoured.

Swizzels double lollies.

Walnut whips - and the coffee walnut whips in particular.

I’m sure there are more - my memory is not as good as it used to be - even for sweets.

Peanut brittle - still love it now
Somebody mentioned strawberry & cream chupa chups & I remembered some sweets that flavour but not the name. They were really good!

Once a week, I’d go to the corner shop and get a ‘quart’ of sugared almonds with my pocket money. Such a lovely memory! I can taste them now just thinking about it.

Pacers spearmint chews. Nicest sweet ever. So sad they discontinued them.

I also loved pear drops and cola cubes and those candy cigarettes.

I used to love Opal Fruits, cola cubes, aniseed balls (no idea why, they certainly don’t appeal to my adult self!), pineapple cubes, sherbet lemons, fudge, chewy sweets and things like those chocolate buttons with the hundreds abs thousands on them.

Hated dolly mixtures, liquorice allsorts (except the round coconut ones with the liquorice centre which were marginally okay), wine gums (my mother loved these and I hated them), and all sorts of toffees which I hated the feeling of getting stuck in my teeth.

I’d forgotten loads of these!

Our local corner shop (London, 1980s) used to sell sweets in 10p or 20p mixes in a little paper bag.

Tiny sweets were 1/2 penny.
Fruit Salads/Blackjacks/Cola Bottles etc were 1p. Anything chocolatey like Icy Cups were 2p.

You could push the boat out and get a 5p sweet like a Highland Toffee bar (my favourite…no wonder I’ve got fillings!), Dib Dab, Fireballs or Fizz Whizz. If you were properly flush you could branch out to 10p for some KP Dipsticks or a lucky dip bag.

I had an obsession with sweets that doubled up as something else - candy necklaces, candy whistles, candy lipsticks and ‘ring pops’. 😋

Tiny bars of Cadburys chocolate that came in a box! And you could buy a little plastic vending machine to put them in!

Texan Bars
Chocolate Limes
Sweet Peanuts (sliced my tongue open on one once!)
Fruit Polos..

Oh you have all let me down so much 😕.

I went through the whole thread and I might have missed it but no one seems to mention lions butterscotch gums!

They tasted like wethers originals but with a sports mix/midget gum consistency and I loved them. I used to get a quarter weekly until about 5 years ago (it feels like that but probably longer) then they were discontinued.

I have seen petitions to bring them back, the local sweet shop said they are constantly asked for them, but alas they seem to be a relic of the past.

They still do the liquorice gums (thank goodness!) that were the same shape and consistency but different flavour and as liquorice is pretty unpopular I maybe need to stock up and prepare for lions to discontinue them as well!

If anyone else feels the same loss as me and remembers them, I suggest we start a campaign to bring them back. I have hopefully jogged some people’s memory about them!
