Inspired by the Sweets you used to hate as a child thread, I thought I’d start one about the sweets I loved as a child (and probably still love too).

Chocolate cigarettes - they has edible paper round them and came in a pack that looked like a real cigarette packet.

Anything coffee flavoured.

Swizzels double lollies.

Walnut whips - and the coffee walnut whips in particular.

I’m sure there are more - my memory is not as good as it used to be - even for sweets.

Texan
Ranchero crisps
Those round lemon chewy bon bons with the icing sugar
Cherry lips

Summereveningwalks · 01/06/2025 09:37

10p mix ups. You’d get a chocolate mouse, a flump, a flying saucer, a couple of jelly sweets, one of those chocolate cup things.

Cadbury’s Spira bars or Cadburys wildlife bars

Chocolate tools

Dolly mixtures

Sherbert

Chocolate limes

Cadbury’s Strawberry Silk.

No one ever remembers it.

RabbitsRock · 01/06/2025 10:00

Great post! I still love shops with sweets in big jars or online stores where you can get all the vintage sweets.
Rhubarb & Custard
Rosy Apples
Pear Drops
Toffee bonbons in plain, lemon or strawberry
Midget gems
Tooty Fruti
Toffos
Jellytots
Golden Cup
A choc bar called Icebreaker
Old Jamaica when it was still a mixture of milk & plain chocolate. I loved the wrapper with the tall ship
Animal bars
Pineapple chunks
Cadburys choc b4 palm oil etc
The little choc bars you used to get out of vending machines on the tube station platforms
Quality Street as it used to be
Pick & Mix Jellybelly jellybeans in Woolies
Strawberry ruffles
Milk chews
Pink Panther strawberry chocolate bars - we only ever found them at DF’s squash club. 2p from the vending machine!
Revels before they changed
We used to buy some rectangular hard boiled fruit sweets for long car journies - can’t remember the name but they had a picture of the fruit on the wrapper & were soft centred.
Loved the tins of travel sweets but getting covered in icing sugar not so much
Sweet necklaces
Sherbet fountains with the liquorice dipper
Smarties
Pacers
Cabana bars although they were very sweet

You mean like the whistle that was a boiled sweet, with a little round sweet inside the boiled sugar tube to make the whistling sound when you blew it? Was that Chupa chops?

RabbitsRock · 01/06/2025 10:34

Plain Bounty - so sad those were discontinued!

RabbitsRock · 01/06/2025 10:35

Ooh yes I’d forgotten Double Deckers used to have raisins in

I remember cherry drops.

They were in a tube style packet and they were pink hard boiled sweets.

I really think you might have it there! It was exactly that shape, flat on one side and round on the top. Where in earth did you get that photo? I've been researching for years 🤣
Thank you

Edited

No one could remember the mint one (thought I’d imagined it ) and it took a long time googling last year before I found a Facebook page discussing it, which is where the photo is from. Someone mentions an orange one too. There’s also a Reddit page where someone says they preferred the strawberry one.
‘Anytime puff candy’ if you want to go searching but there’s no other pictures except that dodgy green one 😆

I came on here to say Wham bars and I grew up in SE England

I also loved 10p mix ups, especially with foam shrimps. And you used to be able to get rolls of toffees that came in different flavours. Oh and Cherry Drops!

Toffo?
And "Fruit flavoured sticks , (lime/orange.strawberry) slightly chewy , slightly fizzy" Frother bars?

sueelleker · 01/06/2025 15:22

Iwontlethtesungodownonme · 30/05/2025 20:57

I am sure they used to come in a little square box but can’t find them on Google.

Alphabet letters. Some of the old-fashioned sweetshops online have them.
I loved Callard and |Bowser's Plain Jane almond toffee.

sueelleker · 01/06/2025 15:31

Ooh , haven't heard that name , they were loose in boxes , not pre-wrapped (this was the mid 70s Grin ) , I think we called them FizzleSticks but that might've just been a local name ?

I remember cherry drops.

They were in a tube style packet and they were pink hard boiled sweets.

You can still get these. Our local petrol station has them. Not as sour as I remember. The packet is whitish.

WinterNightStars · 01/06/2025 16:41

Loved a Texan bar, Pacers & Spangles

BeReet · 01/06/2025 16:57

This thread has had me absolutely drooling 🤤 I loved (still love tbh) Tooty Frooties, Wham bars, Lutti Fruit bonbons (oh how I miss these especially) Toffos, Mint Poppets, coconut mushrooms, lemon sherbets, chocolate limes, red bountys 😭 coffee creams in the Black magic box ... I have such a sweet tooth and really wish I didn't

Lucky bags
Tudor pickled onion crisps
chicken in a basket crisps
fruit salad
black jacks
flying saucer
puff candy
treats
smarties
toffee crumble lollies
big foot lollies

If we are allowed to include crisps…
I remember KP Crisps in the 70s, cheese and onion in a yellow bag, they were completely drenched in flavour powder…
Your mouth was numb after eating them. Also the roast chicken ones.

We used to buy them from the off licence but I haven’t seen them for decades. Sometimes I dream about them 😁

Monkey4444 · 02/06/2025 18:43

A quarter of cherry lips from the shop after school on a Friday. Spiral chocolate and secret bars were also lovely!
