Inspired by the Sweets you used to hate as a child thread, I thought I’d start one about the sweets I loved as a child (and probably still love too).

Chocolate cigarettes - they has edible paper round them and came in a pack that looked like a real cigarette packet.

Anything coffee flavoured.

Swizzels double lollies.

Walnut whips - and the coffee walnut whips in particular.

I’m sure there are more - my memory is not as good as it used to be - even for sweets.

If we are allowed to include crisps…
I remember KP Crisps in the 70s, cheese and onion in a yellow bag, they were completely drenched in flavour powder…
Your mouth was numb after eating them. Also the roast chicken ones.

We used to buy them from the off licence but I haven’t seen them for decades. Sometimes I dream about them 😁

There were crisps called "49ers" , shaped like a wheel off a wagin - reformed potato snacks rather than crisps.
They were pickled onion flavour ....one packet slipped down a treat but left you craving a second . If you were foolhardy enough to indulge you lost the feeling in your mouth .
Sadly not available now

Are you Scottish by any chance @ChocolateGanache ? I ask because I think Wham Bars were by MacGowans and not that well known outside Scotland? I do remember the lurid pink colour and the fizzy sprinkles….and the 10p ones were MAHOOSIVE…absolutely excellent at pulling out fillings!

My friend was secretly eating a Wham bar during orchestra practice, got her wobbly tooth stuck in it and was in quite some difficulty! The teacher was furious that she was eating sweets while she was crying with the sticky Wham bar attached to the tooth…

For actual sweets, I only really liked peppermints. Mint imperials or Fox's Glacier mints.

Sherbet fountain was nice but I had to throw the liquorice away because I hated it.

Creme eggs when the foil used to be green and red!

Fry’s Five Centres - they sold this in the shop at the swimming pool so I’d have this after swimming on a Saturday.

Pacers - spearmint chews. Very nice.

Sweet peanuts - kind of peanut brittle encased in a sugary coating all in the shape of a monkey nut. I reckon you could still find those in an old fashioned sweetie shop.

Golden cup - I had forgotten I loved this until a PP mentioned it.

Some sort of box of chocolates I can remember being given sometimes called Weekend ! They were kind of OTT by today’s standards I think. Also old fashioned Quality Street with all the old discontinued ones. I’m showing my age now.

Lindajonesjustcantlivemylife · 03/08/2025 20:56

Golden cup was ace as long as the foil wasn't sticking to any caramel.

Toffee crumble from the corner shop on the way home from school

The Cadbury’s vending machine where you put 2p in and out popped a tiny bar of dairy milk. I’m not sure if I ever had one or I just dreamed about it so much if felt real but I do remember the pain of never getting my a refill when it ran out.

FazeleysRoyale · 03/08/2025 21:22

Parma violets

Bazooka Joe bubblegum which came with a tiny comic strip to unfold and read

Gold Nuggets bubble gum in the little cloth bag. Not to be confused with Golden Nuggets breakfast cereal. Both were great. I had a lot of fillings as a child ( although that might be due to full sugar Coke and Ribena )

FazeleysRoyale · 03/08/2025 21:23

Oh and how could I forget : Pez in the cute little hand held dispensers which had funny heads. Do they still make Pez ?

Creme Eggs and Marble bars. Always loved jelly babies and dolly mixtures too, especially the little cube ones with the white filling in. Coconut mushrooms.

Loved the exact same! And marshmallows.

M&S used to do a layered bar that I loved…

Parma violets, they are still lovely. A friend tells me they would be like eating a perfume and cannot stand them.

GreenMarigold · 03/08/2025 22:23

I have never been a huge fan of sweets but my favourites were white mice and boiled sweets like the travel ones or lemon sherbets.
