We didn't hear complaints about the Aus FTA

https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/media/61b9b783e90e0704439f4400/uk-australia-free-trade-agreement-fta-mobility-explainer.pdf

Same with the youth mobility scheme with the EU, nobody ever minds the WHM with Australia

Just seen this from Reform Party Exposed on Bluesky, the new County Councillors are getting off to a good start 🤢

Oh, ffs, peddling this tripe is fucking dangerous. It's bad enough when it's shared by Joe Bloggs from up the road, but from people who have a responsibility to democracy it's unforgivable.

Awful stuff. He has form for this. https://www.lancashiretelegraph.co.uk/news/25104436.potential-accrington-councillor-pressed-far-right-content/

That councillor has done a lot of work (with many dissolved companies) on renewable energy. I wonder how he squares that circle with Reform "policies"? (as they say that they would impose taxes on the renewable energy sector) Leopards eating my face comes to mind.

East Lancs Reform candidate slammed for sharing far-right content

An election candidate for Reform UK in Hyndburn has been condemned by rivals for sharing content on social media from a far-right group.

Interesting read from Dr Jeevun Sandher (MP for Loughborough)
https://jeevunsandher.substack.com/p/last-weeks-results-show-us-how-we

That’s a very sensible analysis with some positive ideas for improving lives. If only it was the government’s narrative.

Notonthestairs · 07/05/2025 10:40

As you say he has form. Post on social media and then retract pretending he hadn’t understood the background.

Evenstar · 07/05/2025 11:19

That article is excellent @Notonthestairs very well thought out, DH and I have been saying for months that what is needed is money in people’s pockets and feeling they have a prospect of things improving.

To be honest, I think it’s a lot of words to state the bleedin’ obvious. James Carville put it into Clinton’s mouth better: “it’s the economy, stupid”.

If Labour can turn the economy upwards they’ll do OK. If they can’t, they won’t.

Can they be disciplined/removed as councillors for obviously racist conspiracy tripe like this? And how would one go about getting the ball rolling if so?

cardibach · 07/05/2025 11:33

I agree @Rummly (that doesn’t happen often 😀).
People need to feel a difference in their pockets. Deals like the India one will help, but more needs to be done.

DuncinToffee · 07/05/2025 11:51

Farage is stirring up hatred against Indians and we are supposed to believe they are just concerned rather than racist?

Fuck off

Good old Royal mail. Just received this in the post, urging us to vote Reflux on May 1st (torn corner because I didn't notice this on the back until I had ripped our names and addresses off to recycle.)

None of it is relevant to the role of county councils.

You can make a complaint about the behaviour of a councillor i.e. you believe that they have failed to comply with the code of conduct.

I bet the tone would be very different if it was a UK/US deal with the same NICs recipricol agreements.

Plenty of stirring on MN too, both in relation to the deal and the attack on Pakistan. Some posters are positively drooling for conflict between the two communities here, so they can then scream about Lucy Connolly and two tier policing etc.

The racists are emboldened.

I’ve seen people say it’s a big coincidence that the attack on Pakistan happened on the same day as the deal. Not sure what conspiracy they are trying to peddle - don’t think they are yet either. Just fishing about for a way to link Starmer to it.

DuncinToffee · 07/05/2025 12:17

PMQs, Badenoch is attacking Labour on Net Zero

Rebuttal from Starmer saying she is not a climate denier but a "climate defeatist", who doesn't believe the UK can decarbonise and reading out quotes from Badenoch and Stride backing green energy and saying they were “right then”

Edited

Agree.

my personal opinion is that it’ll take a few years before people feel it in their pockets.

but I think people will struggle to feel it even if it’s there because the media will use power if persuasion to convince them they don’t feel richer etc.

Reform will get in at next GE (god help us!).

Nothing will improve. All the disenfranchised people who voted reform will end up in a worse position.

O think by 2030 will have a totally different political landscape and will vote differently and have different ways of government being formed.

Personally i do think Labour will make some improvements - probably not enough in 4 years to undo the previous at least 8. Certainly not enough for people not to be persuaded by the media we aren’t better off or that immigration is still at fault.

BIossomtoes · 07/05/2025 13:11

I think I’ll top myself now if you’re right @itsgettingweird.
