She’d be better off in charge of a think fish tank

Corrected that for you @bombastix

cardibach · 08/05/2025 14:56

I think that’s a bit unfair @BIWI
Shes a highly qualified woman who has had success in a pretty difficult work environment. Diminishing her achievement and ability seems a bit churlish, even if you don’t like or agree with her.

BIWI · 08/05/2025 14:57

Nope. I’m not sorry. She’s a dreadful woman.

I'm not convinced I can recall a genuinely popular Chancellor.
I thought they were there to absorb some of the flack for governing.

DuncinToffee · 08/05/2025 15:01

I don't get this hatred for Reeves Confused Her red lines are wrong but to despise her, no, I don't get it.

OP posts:
cardibach · 08/05/2025 15:03

Same @DuncinToffee She’s made mistakes, of course. Who hasn’t? But hating her seems OTT.

BIWI · 08/05/2025 15:03

I suspect/hope that we’re posting at cross purposes. @cardibach - my comments were about Badenoch, following @bombastix’s post.

"The only bit that is credible by Badenoch is saying she was offered something similar. If she said NO, then seriously it reflects on her and her ability to actually conclude matters. Politics is actually about delivery not endless discussion. She’d be better off in charge of a think tank. Deals have to finish."

Not Rachel Reeves. (Who I think is pretty OK, mostly)

Edited

Ah ok! Sorry! Yes I was musing in thinking Reeves would be better coming up with ideas and knocking them around but I’d agree a Badenoch doesn’t seem the ideal fit for that.
I still think she must have some ability to get where she’s got - I mean, the paucity of talent in the Tory party will have helped I guess…I do dislike her though.

BIossomtoes · 08/05/2025 15:08

I don’t hate Reeves, I feel very sorry for her. She’s become the right wing punch bag and the personal insults are horrific. Because of that she’s become a distraction.

DuncinToffee · 08/05/2025 15:10

Definitely cross purposes here

I don't despise Badenoch either, I don't agree with her but there are others who are a lot worse than her.

OP posts:
cardibach · 08/05/2025 15:10

Yes, that’s the issue @BIossomtoes
It’s just become too much of a habit to abuse her instead of looking at the actual situation. A shake up might help change the narrative a bit (especially if they actually develop one…) and would surely be a relief for her in some ways.

Yes the problem is she’s become a distraction and target.

I don’t 100% agree with all her decisions but I don’t think the general hatred towards her is warranted.

Im not sure even Truss had such a hard time with the media - and we all know (are feeling) the consequences of her decisions.

DuncinToffee · 08/05/2025 15:52

Mandelson is with the 🍊ready to tell us about the deal

I’m not a fan of Badenoch but I do see where she is coming from in some of her narrative. She’s another one who is bad at comms.

Sadly we have competent people we may or may not agree with who are bad at comms and then Farage who’s good at comms - but who I absolutely do t agree with!

So far the impression given, UK won easily with key interests protected, Trump a pushover attracted by lower tariffs that won't make much difference plus Boeing planes number which is independent of government

No digital services tax reduction, no US food standards, car exports free of tariff, to be fair chemical tariff reduction by UK could be significant given energy cost differential

It’s a bit of a good news day all round between the announcement about tariffs and a cut in the interest rate.

I am sure some will spin it negatively.

And deepening UK EU trade, the big prize available, is unaffected by this US deal. No wonder Conservatives are unhappy.

bombastix · 08/05/2025 16:43

Badenoch has already trashed it. Notably Andrew Griffith does not agree with her.

And now very clear why, given she was the Trade Secretary, we didn’t make much progress on agreeing anything.

Karistyleaftea · 08/05/2025 16:51

Go Sir Keir.
I am hearing just now. a tiny bit more respect from the Journos Even BBC's Chris Mason was less sarky.
Let's stop the pile on to Rachel Reeves though please.
She is not operating in a vacuum, without advisors, but being a woman she becomes an easy target for the media.

”we hold all the cards”. 🙄

(I really, really doubt Badenoch had looked at any of the detail or read anything apart from Twitter)

This is key.
Obviously the EU will move at its usual pace - but not having our hands tied is a real bonus.

bombastix · 08/05/2025 17:09

The EU is moving at its usual glacial pace with France moaning about fish instead of agreeing mutual defence spending access.

Apparently it doesn’t make sense to have a universal agreement on defence spending with a major neighbour with a world leading arms industry because the current fish deal expires in 2026.

There is a perfect space left by Starmer for food standards and alignment. Well done him. Unfortunately he still has to pilot this through the EU. Do not get excited

derxa · 08/05/2025 17:17

Thank god the USA doesn’t produce much lamb. I await the details of agriculture imports and exports in this deal.
