Can't believe I didn't used to shower before bed.

I have fine, thin hair that needs washing every morning or it looks greasy. For YEARS I have showered every morning, gone about my day, and then fallen into bed at the end of the day. Didn't really think about it.

But recently I have started having a quick shower just before bed and it has changed everything! It is SO NICE being all clean and getting into a nice clean bed. I am now horrified by the idea of falling into bed all covered in the day's grime to marinade all night. Yuck. (I do still shower in the morning too - can't face the day without washing my hair).

Evening showers. 10/10. Highly recommend.

Your hair is greasy because you’ve stripped all the natural oils out. Hair isn’t meant to be washed everyday.

Annialisting · 28/04/2025 09:53

I love an evening shower and getting into bed all clean.

Jshrbt · 28/04/2025 09:55

Genuinely don’t believe I’m covered in grime at the end of the day to be honest and it’s not great for the environment nor my bills

Motherknowsrest · 28/04/2025 09:56

I've only ever showered at night. Have wavy hair that needs to air dry.

I'll only shower in the morning on the 3 heatwave days a year when I'm in the office too.

Unfortunately not true for everyone. I see people say this on the internet all the time so I went 6 months only washing my hair twice a week to try and "train" my hair. Didn't work and instead I just spent half a year with shit, greasy hair.

I tried this in the pandemic. My hair got worse and worse. On a few occasions the water was actually slightly dirty (large town, loads of running in the pandemic).
A gentle daily wash is the only way to make my hair look even slightly presentable.

I shower before I sit down to eat on an afternoon/evening. I only wash my hair once a week.

Justfreedom · 28/04/2025 10:26

Have you tried not using conditioner on your hair.
Or just use it on the end of your hair i do this it works for me.
Some people use conditioner then shampoo.
Shower time for me are mornings and nights.
If i had to choose one it would be at night.

Blondebrownorred · 28/04/2025 10:28

I agree with the evening shower thing. I hate getting into bed with the days dirty, sweat etc on me. I hate the thought I've been sitting on public toilet seats then getting into bed unwashed.

Langdale3 · 28/04/2025 10:28

For greasy haired me I find that a shampoo bar is much better than regular liquid shampoo. I use a faith in nature one.

And yes, evening showers are great.

TomatoSandwiches · 28/04/2025 10:30

I'm also a convert, I still shower every morning to wake myself up but have a quick soapy rinse at night and a deep bath twice a week in the evenings, bliss.

BacktoBeginnersFran · 28/04/2025 10:30

What are you doing during the day that you fall into bed full of grime? Dumpster diving? Cleaning sewers?

Is this the new thing... People will now be judged for not showering twice a day? Ffs! 🙄

MrsSkylerWhite · 28/04/2025 10:31

I bathe in the morning. Rarely covered in grime at the end of the day 😁

I have the same problem and did the same thing and it made no difference

This is mumsnet. Anything other than 3 showers a day, plus before and after any sexual contact, changing sheets once a day, washing towels and clothes after every use, is “grim”.

This simply isnt true for everyone

I used to wash my hair everyday because it needed it. Now over the years its less and less necessary and in peri menopause I can now leave it about 4 days.

OP evening showers are necessary if you get hay fever, always wash the pollen out of your hair/off your skin before bed otherwise you're grinding it into the pillow which is getting in your eyes and ears

I shower in the morning but sometimes also at night in the summer for this reason

Depends on the person, obviously. We are all different.

TomatoSandwiches · 28/04/2025 10:35

I don't really care about anyone else's bathing habits, I do get mucky most days but my mental health benefits the most from my evening shower/bath.

Rubbish.
Some people just have more greasy hair, nothing to do with how often they wash it. If they wash it less frequently then it looks and smells even more greasy, it doesn't magically become normal.
It's the same as some people having more oily skin than others.
If you have greasy hair and you don't want it to look like that then your hair needs washing every day.

Bingbopboomboomboombopbam · 28/04/2025 10:38

Happy you’ve discovered personal hygiene x

CharismaticPelican · 28/04/2025 10:41

I agree with you. I can't get into bed dirty anymore! Shower or bath before bed every day. Like a pp said, sitting on public toilet seats freaks me out a bit now. Just a bit yuck

Not true. My hair is INFINITELY better since I stopped listening to this rubbish and washed it every day, my hair was not greasy and impossible to look decent despite trying TONS of different shampoos etc, just needed washing everyday

slamdunk66 · 28/04/2025 10:46

I prefer an evening shower. I put on my deodorant and it has time to settle. If I shower in the morning (and wash my hair) I’m hot and sweaty all day.

StMarie4me · 28/04/2025 10:47

Not for everyone.

This is a myth and I'm bored of people saying it as though they know better. I'm 37 years old I know how to wash my hair.
