Can't believe I didn't used to shower before bed.

I have fine, thin hair that needs washing every morning or it looks greasy. For YEARS I have showered every morning, gone about my day, and then fallen into bed at the end of the day. Didn't really think about it.

But recently I have started having a quick shower just before bed and it has changed everything! It is SO NICE being all clean and getting into a nice clean bed. I am now horrified by the idea of falling into bed all covered in the day's grime to marinade all night. Yuck. (I do still shower in the morning too - can't face the day without washing my hair).

Evening showers. 10/10. Highly recommend.

Your hair is greasy because you’ve stripped all the natural oils out. Hair isn’t meant to be washed everyday.

This isn't true. People with dry skin conditions would be told to wash their bodies several times a day with carbolic soap if it stimulated oil production.

JFC, are we really at the stage where we're being judged for not showing TWICE A DAY? I despair

Mn has been judging people on this for years! 🤣

The super-sniffers can tell to the nearest minute when each person in the train carriage/their office last had a shower.

IRL I bet most people neither know or care how frequently anyone else showers admittedly I do have to prompt my soap dodging teen on ocassion

Ohplesandbanonos · 28/04/2025 13:56

I love a shower and washing my hair in the evening before bed. I wrap my hair in a towel turban then when mostly dry I use heatless curlers overnight. I do my skin care after the shower and in the morning have a super quick 'pits and bits' shower. So much quicker to be ready for work in the morning!

I don't believe the environment is substantially impacted by my second 5 min shower of the day, especially when most of America use disposable plates and cutlery for every meal and other people are flying by private jet.

This is an urban myth. I did the don't wash your hair for 6 weeks thing at uni. It doesn't self - clean and just looks greasy after a few days. People with fine hair and oily skin need to wash their hair daily. If you don't, good for you.

Pinkrabbitt · 28/04/2025 14:03

I don't understand where this washing hair = greasy hair myth comes from. How about you stop washing your face and seeing if it stops being greasy? No? It's exactly the same principle.

I have PCOS so have greasy skin and that includes my scalp. Not washing my hair isn't going to change that.

Sunsweetsandandicecream · 28/04/2025 14:04

I prefer nighttimes, I wouldn't like to get into bed not fresh. Mornings are also hectic for me.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 28/04/2025 14:07

What are you doing to get covered in grime?!

Cornishclio · 28/04/2025 14:08

I shower at night too usually especially if I have been out hiking. I wash my hair every 2 or 3 days though as I heard you shouldn’t wash it every day.

Arancia · 28/04/2025 15:11

Welcome to the bright side. Showering before going to bed is the best feeling in the world.

CandiedPrincess · 28/04/2025 15:15

I work from home, how grimey can you get in a day?

I never shower at night as I can't be arsed to dry my hair at that time and neither do I want to go to bed with it wet, so I like a morning shower. Makes me feel cleaner as I can get a bit sweaty at night and have inevitably been rolling around with the husband too.

SnailandWhal · 28/04/2025 15:31

For all the greasy haired gals - mousse. Game changer.

If I put mousse in after I've washed my hair - my hair is always less greasy/stays fresher for longer.

If, on the very rare occasion, I can't apply mousse after washing my hair - the difference is insane - so much flatter/greasier.

Could never go back now!

To be fair, two short showers a day could have less impact on the environment than one longer one. One shower with a ridiculous power shower could be much worse for the environment than two with a basic electric shower.

I don't think two showers are particularly good for the skin, but you can't possibly know what her environmental impact is just because she showers twice.

And one short shower a day would be even better for the environment.

Yes but most people don’t take particularly short showers and more and more people have ridiculous power showers so I don’t see the point berating the OP when you literally don’t know what her showers are like.

You could easily say one shower a week is better for the environment (and your skin) but you’d get few takers.

And I say this as a dedicated environmentalist of many years. Berating people doesn’t help.

There's no shortage of water in the UK though. Whether someone has 1 or 5 showers a day in the UK is not going to make a blind bit of difference to the availability of water in Sudan or Ethiopia for example.

If someone wants to have 2 showers a day it's no one else's business. It doesn't matter to anyone else at all.

I shower every morning and wash my dry hair every few days. If it's hot or I've been gardening then I often have an evening shower too.

I have several rainwater butts and only use rainwater from those to water my garden pots and borders, so I conserve water that way. But I do that because it's easy, better for plants and it means it costs me less for my water, not because I'm thinking about someone short of water in another country( whilst of course having sympathy for them).

SharpOpalNewt · 28/04/2025 17:38

I like showering in the evening but not usually in addition to showering in the morning unless it's a very hot day.

Washing my hair in the evening in hayfever season is a particularly good idea as it gets rid of any pollen stuck to it during the day. And means I don't wake up with itchy, puffy eyes and an itchy mouth.

AlteredStater · 28/04/2025 17:50

Such a strange mindset to feel that you are 'covered in grime' unless you work in a job that gets you actually dirty! I never really liked showering before bed, I'd just wake up feeling sweaty and needing to wash again!

There's no shortage of water at the moment, but we do experience droughts and it does become necessary to conserve water. In years past when it's been extremely dry, the Environment Agency has had to run drought awareness campaigns to encourage people not to waste water because reservoirs have dropped to critically low levels - hosepipe bans make a bit of difference, but aren't always enough.

The environmental impact of a shower isn't just about water use, anyway. It's the energy required to heat it.

MoominMai · 28/04/2025 18:01

I think if you suffer from allergies from pollen etc then it is recommended to have an evening shower so you don’t carry that from your hair and body into the bed but even then not sure why you’d need a morning shower also especially if you washed your hair the evening before also?

JustABitLivid · 28/04/2025 18:05

I also have fine, greasy hair and used to wash it every day. I now wash it every second day and am trying to move to every third day but it's not really working.

Every second day works for me. Importantly, I still rinse it on the non-wash days. I also use biodegradable shampoo and conditioner which is gentle.

People suggest not using conditioner for greasy hair but I disagree. When you wash it, you strip it of its natural oils, so you need to 'replace' the lost oil with a moisturiser. It's the same as when you wash your skin with soap -- you need to replace the lost moisture with body lotion.

SummerFeverVenice · 28/04/2025 18:10

I shower every evening as I have horrible hay fever. I don’t usually shower in the morning, sometimes a quick 2min soap and rinse if I’ve had night sweats.

try putting dry shampoo in the night before at bedtime. then it soaks up a good bit by time wake up and you get another day out of it

namechangenelly1 · 28/04/2025 18:19

I’ve always had night time showers. Mainly because I’m a lazy cow and can’t get out of bed in the morning.

Some people on here have said the environmental impact is about water use.

If you're talking about energy use have you started heating your home less, driving less, flying less, washing up less, washing your clothes less, so that you use less energy because of its environmental impact rather than its financial cost to you. If so you're quite unusual I'd suggest.

Most people are happy to do things which have an environmental benefit if they're easy and don't affect their life much eg recycling household rubbish, making a compost heap, water butts etc. But very few indeed will stop having showers even if they feel like having one, so as to reduce the environmental impact, and quite honestly why should they.

Nannyfannybanny · 28/04/2025 18:35

I've been under a dermatology consultant for a couple of years
.I had perianal and vulval dermatitis
.I have to shower that area daily with a special cream stuff
. she told me, people shower wash bath too much, it's bad for the skin.you destroy the good bacteria and the skin mantle
