Can't believe I didn't used to shower before bed.

I have fine, thin hair that needs washing every morning or it looks greasy. For YEARS I have showered every morning, gone about my day, and then fallen into bed at the end of the day. Didn't really think about it.

But recently I have started having a quick shower just before bed and it has changed everything! It is SO NICE being all clean and getting into a nice clean bed. I am now horrified by the idea of falling into bed all covered in the day's grime to marinade all night. Yuck. (I do still shower in the morning too - can't face the day without washing my hair).

Evening showers. 10/10. Highly recommend.

It’s not true that washing causes greasy hair or even that hair has natural oil. Hair is dead, is just growing out your head. Your scalp produces natural oil, some people scalp produce more than others and this obviously travels down the hair.

using soap on your hair doesn’t influence the amount of oil your scalp produces

HoppingPavlova · 28/04/2025 10:51

My hair was the same but I went to washing it once a week, and after a period of time it adapted.

I don’t roll in puddles or dog shit during the day so don’t believe I need two showers a day. I’m yet to meet anyone who became sick from just having one, and of all the people I know no one smells and I really doubt all of them are having two showers a day.

Your hair is greasy because you’ve stripped all the natural oils out. Hair isn’t meant to be washed everyday.

That's a bit of a myth, to be honest. It might be true in some cases, certainly, but many people just have a naturally oily scalp. 'Resetting' your natural oil level is fine if your natural oil level isn't particularly high. But if your natural oil level is high, washing it less often won't magically make it less so. 'Natural oils' are just sebum. Some people will always produce a lot more of it than others and some people's hair needs frequent washing.

Nottodaty · 28/04/2025 10:58

I’m the wrong age not to be showering in the morning - usually night sweats and generally need it to wake me up!

If I’m been to the gym or it’s been very hot I will shower.

Hair washing - I can leave for a few days and it will be greasy - if I’m going into the office it’s washed every day !

EveryOtherNameTaken · 28/04/2025 10:59

I have greasy hair too and that's why I shower in the morning too. I love my wfh day as I shower the night before and don't care about it being greasy by the end of the day.

Please don’t go on about this as if some people literally don’t know how to wash themselves. That might work for you but not everyone.

Branster · 28/04/2025 11:04

No better feeling than going to bed having had a shower. Although I also wash my hair every 2/3 evenings.

I plan my hair wash with cooking evening meals as far as possible, because I cannot stand having hair smelling of food. I might even cover my hair when cooking if I can't be bothered to wash my hair that particular evening or it simply doesn't need washing otherwise.

It's not about washing away some sort of grime like questioned in some comments here, although of course that might be the if I spent the day doing DIY or heavy gardening. It is that lovely feeling of being clean in a clean bed and also not having to shower in the morning when I will just have to have a wash.

Another thing I could never get on with, was the idea of applying antiperspirant in the evening (those special antiperspirants that are supposed to be 'activated' overnight. It interferes with that super clean feeling I like. Strangely though, I don't mind applying body lotion after evening shower.

I'd have showers in the mornings or afternoons in hot weather when needed.

I guess everyone is different and we all have different routines based on habits, time and personal preferences. There's no right or wrong and, ultimately, nobody knows or cares. But I remain camp evening showers all the way.

nomas · 28/04/2025 11:04

Do people even need a medal for showering now? You shower twice a day, we get it.

Spare a thought for the 2 billion people in the world who lack access to clean water.

IcedPurple · 28/04/2025 11:06

I am now horrified by the idea of falling into bed all covered in the day's grime to marinade all night.

Are you working down the mines or something?

How are you covered in 'grime' on a typical day?

Regarding hair, I too have very fine hair which needs to be washed often or it looks lank and greasy. On the advice of a hairdresser friend, I stretch out time between washes by using Batiste dry shampoo in the evening, tying my hair up loosely and leaving it to 'marinade' overnight. Hair looks bouncy and full of volume the next morning so I can go an extra day without washing.

QuizzlyBears · 28/04/2025 11:10

I also wash my hair every day and simply don’t listen to the myths around stripping natural oils. I shower off in the evening before bed and wash my hair/properly shower in the mornings. Couldn’t imagine it any other way!

Unfortunately not true for everyone. I see people say this on the internet all the time so I went 6 months only washing my hair twice a week to try and "train" my hair. Didn't work and instead I just spent half a year with shit, greasy hair.

Worked for me and my sis - me with thick long hair she with thin fine hair, now both of us wash hair once a week. Hair doesn't get greasy till like the day before washing and no need to use dry shampoo at all. Its great
Now i have more baths then showers which helps relax me before bed

user101101 · 28/04/2025 11:11

I never understood when people didn't wash before bed. I made DH do it cos there was no way I'd get in otherwise 😂. Quick underarm wash in the morning.

GameOfJones · 28/04/2025 11:21

I love an evening shower or bath and have one every day (normally after work though and into pyjamas rather than just before bed.) I like getting into bed all clean as well. I only wash my hair every other day though, it's very thick and long and takes an age to dry. Which is another reason I've always been an evening rather than morning washer.

But two showers a day feels totally unnecessary. I don't get sweaty overnight so don't shower in the mornings, just stick to my daily evening wash apart from the few days a year in high summer when it's really hot overnight then I may have a quick body wash first thing.

gmgnts · 28/04/2025 11:22

But what about the environment? It's incredibly wasteful to shower twice a day or - dare I say it - even every day. Running water is a gift that many people on our planet don't have, and those of us that are lucky enough to have bathrooms and showers should be conserving water as best we can.

DeciDela · 28/04/2025 11:24

Re hair I think it really depends on the person, and indeed can change for the person themselves. I used to wash my (thick, usually shortish in a bob) hair twice a week, and it was completely fine, until the age of about 47. Recently however I find that I absolutely need to wash it every other day otherwise it feels yuk. As with so many things I don't think you can use your own experience to dictate what others should do (and I would have been in the "oh why do you need to wash it every day" camp in the past).

Genuinely don’t believe I’m covered in grime at the end of the day to be honest and it’s not great for the environment nor my bills

That’s great for you. Congratulations.

You're suggesting people shower every other day? Yuck. The smells. The general public are grimy.

When the first post DOESN’T nail it.
my fine hair gets greasy quickly. Tried training it during the pandemic. Didn’t work. You know what did work?- Being pregnant and breastfeeding but as soon as I stopped breastfeeding it went right back to being greasy again.
my conclusion is that it’s hormones and nothing to do with how often I was it.

Whelmed · 28/04/2025 11:37

For fine hair that gets greasy looking really quick, I find blow drying gently makes all the difference and doesn't look so greasy by the second day!

Whatsgoingonherethenagain · 28/04/2025 10:33

This is mumsnet. Anything other than 3 showers a day, plus before and after any sexual contact, changing sheets once a day, washing towels and clothes after every use, is “grim”.

Was just about to post something along these lines. I don’t shower daily - I have very very dry skin due to hypothyroidism and being post meno; it literally rubs off in the shower as I rinse the soap off. I also have ridiculously thick curly hair that takes all day to dry naturally and would be unmanageable if I washed it every day. Lots of flannel washes for me, and deodorant, clean clothes/undies every day, seems to keep me clean and fresh smelling enough!

Same! I’m a teacher and I’ve used the summer holidays to try to “train” my hair three times. Nope. Greasy and unmanageable if not washed daily.

This is probably a stupid question but how does me showering less help the people who don’t have water? Wouldn’t donating to a charity or
something that helps provide clean water be more effective?

TeenLifeMum · 28/04/2025 11:44

I have evening showers. Hate morning ones but I’m always cold so no sweating overnight. I’m guessing that might change at some point. I often run in the evening too so shower after that. I also only shower every other day (unless running) except when I’m on my period when it’s daily but hair every other day. Occasionally every 3 days.

mn struggles to comprehend that you can have good hygiene without constant washing.
